      The legal definition (original definition) of harassment is when someone does or says something to or about you that you deem offensive and you ask or tell them to stop/cease and they don't. There is harassment and then there is criminal harassment. If EA-Ski was saying or doing something that was made clear by other parties to be offensive and they asked him explicitly to stop/cease and he doesn't, it does constitute harassment. However it's not criminal harassment as there is no economic or physical threats involved. It's all kinda childish and stupid. Grown ass men arguing over the sound of a piece of overpriced gear. it was overpriced back then and it's still overpriced. EA just seems to want to justify the older version because its what he likes.

    I think it boils down to this,
    90% of people are sick of all the corporate bullshit. We’ve been dealing with it for 30+ years. Yes, every company needs to make a profit but if thats your sole purpose than you cant be trusted. This leads to misleading advertising and putting out products that in end, artists dont need.
    We also find ourselves in a strange time. A company doesn’t need to be a huge system with thousands of employees to be corporate anymore. An individual (content creator) can be corporate simply by not being honest with their followers and focusing only on profits. There’s also the problem of “content creators” being paid by bigger companies while pretending to be independent artists.
    Theres nothing wrong with making $$, but if thats the sole goal, your no longer an artist. You’re a corporation and people should know that.

    There's a difference between the quality not being the same as the older products in the same line vs. The quality being bad. The newer MPCs sound quality is NOT bad quality- it's a cleaner sound. Those old converters weren't made with extremely high priced capacitors and parts- they were the cheapest they could find at the time for mass production. People happen( particularly hip hop producers) to like the crunch in the sound. But to say that sound was better is subjective. 95% of the newer producers had no problems with the sound until someone told them they should. To me, that "sound" is 100% associated with 80s,90s boom bap. When you hear it its immediately recognizable. But in today's music- "sound" has moved forward...as it should. When was the last time your mix engineer, collab partner, or mastering engineer told you that they couldn't do their job because your "sound" was produced on a new MPC? Never happened. The whole argument is both valid and it's cap at the same time. Akai isn't ripping anybody off just because they aren't willing to go backwards in time to appease a handful of seasoned producers- when their demographic is the younger crowd. To be clear, I know exactly was SKI is talking about, there is a sound difference, but that difference is not a big deal..to most. Let me add, just because someone has a "resume" doesn't make them correct at whatever they say. Do your own research and ask yourself would that "sound difference" stop you from making money/feeding your family? No...so what's that arguing for.

  • @kb420ps
    @kb420ps Год назад +12

    I think the heart of the matter is "SOUND". I'm 52 years old. I've seen this technology go through a lot of changes. For me personally, I like the sound of the older machines. That's what I grew up on. I always associated the difference in sound with the bit depth of the samplers. To me, 12 bit and 16 bit [and some 8 bit] samplers sound better. The Rossum SP1200 goes for $4k in 2023 because of it's 12 bit sound. Most of the songs that I consider to be "classics" were made on 12 bit and 16 bit samplers. The minute that 24 bit samplers became the norm is when the "magic" in the sound died. On paper 24 bit/96 khz or higher looks impressive. To a sample based hip hop/house producer, those higher spec samplers sound flat, lifeless, and dull. Again, this is just my perspective.
    In a perfect world, I would love to see an MPC with all of the workflow of a MPC X, but with a true 12 or 16 bit signal path end to end. No need for any sample rates above 44.1khz. An adjustable sample rate would be the best situation. I really feel as if there's something magical about the sound of lower spec samplers.
    Just my $.02.

    1. MPC Live/One/X etc. Have vintage emulation you can turn on in the settings. It's global, yes, but it's there.
    2. I once compared 2000XL, 2500 and 4000. Recording control samples at same volume gave pretty much the same results. There was a clear difference with filters though. Aside converters there are also limiters built into the old MPCs and the fact that a 30 year old beatmachine has pretty worn out capacitors. If you recap it the "analog warmth" would be pretty much gone.
    3. I forgot what I was planning to write here.
    4. Oh, just remembered. It's interesting that now we want to have all analog dawless setups while not that long ago it was all about sound quality. Seems more like a fashion than preference. Just like everyone now is having a mustache and wearing old sweaters.

    I read this book about Roger Linn…more so-sp-1200…it explained that each model had its own sound-the mpc 2000 vs mpc 3000 etc. This was due to the algorithm that was used within each machine. It altered the sound and quality of the sample.
    I’m sure the converters def make an impact also.

      It's harder to glue the sounds together. The lows overpower the highs sometimes so the high frequencies chip out. On the older machines the lows might not be as overwhelming but you hear everything clearly. I get it though. Nowadays music doesn't depend on everything sounding clear, it's about the boom. The current audience likes that so the new MPC caters to that. It's mainly people who like the older style productions who are critical.

    Who is Roger Linn? I guess the fact that he was the pioneer of the sample based drum machines - see Linn Drum, - kinda trumps the fact he "worked with Akai". Yes, he is engineer who understood sound better than many, so decline in MPC sound quality surely correlates to his departure. Since he left, he did a few interesting instruments, mainly, Linnstrument and Tempest, in collaboration with Dave Smith - I am happy to have it in my collection. BTW I love vintage Akai samplers, as these were seminal gear for the tons of great music from the 90s. I have Akai S3200 with storage converted to usb, and none of my contemporary samplers, hardware or software, can come close to the sound of the S line. Also, I am not big follower of the hip hop genre, I don't know who this dude is, but he is right about MPC, and I am sure he doesn't care about a 2 grand box - he has some gear worth way more than that and I don't worry about his financial wellbeing.

    Really don't understand what the complaining is about. If I recall, I think my dad paid $5,000 for his MPC 60 when it first launched. That's equivalent to almost 13,000 in today's purchasing power. While the build quality and aesthetically it was superior to what we have today, there's just no comparison with modern MPC's when it comes to features.
    I also don't understand why modern Akai is focused so heavily on catering to the hip hop crowd. MPCs were used heavily in R&B music, Pop music, and plenty of other genres. My father traded in his s950 Akai sampler, which had a lower bit rate, for an s5000 Akai sampler as soon as they became available. In fact, he stopped sampling with the MPC60 and exclusively triggered the s5000s cleaner samples. Point being not everybody craved the lower bit rate MPC 60 / 3000 sound.
    If you want your drums to "hit harder" sample them louder and turn them up to 6. If that's still not loud enough for you, use the plethora of emulations and plugins that come with modern day MPCs. There is no excuse. You can make your drums "hit" as hard as you need them to.
    I started with an MPC 2000 in 98, and upgraded to a 2500. And then took an unfortunate detour into DAW production because I got tired of tracking outboard synthesizers, and fiddling with midi time code / SMPTE etc.
    With the most modern MPCs, new Akai has perfectly blended the MPC workflow (Sequences, pad drumming etc) with the best DAW features, (exporting stems, plug-ins, softsynths, instant recall etc) there's no going back.

    That's a big difference in the snare. These differences add up. Especially when you use a lot of tracks, I can understand the users :D It's funny that modern hardware often sounds thinner. Akai should listen to the users and do a poll. Companies should do that in general, listen to the users and then count how many people actually want that. Simply developing something and hoping that it's great can't work out in the long run. Almost everything modern Gear sounds nearly the same at the end of the day, so people probably want old hardware.

      It was a big difference, but nothing you couldn't add with all the tools that's in the new MPC's & Force. So find that sound & resample everything thru that & get rocking. The cool thing about it being clean is that you're not stuck with that 1 sound & for many people, that's why it's better than the older MPC's.

    I don't think the controversy is only about the converters. The way it looks, it's more about the entire sound of an instrument. Sure the converters are part of the story but also the filter and audio engine. To sum it up, it's the argument that legacy MPC instruments provided sound that could be published right out of the machine. The sound was ready and you could hear it immediately. Something that the new MPC has allegedly lost. Sure you can add outboard gear to finish the track but it requires extra time, effort and money. So the community is divided between these who feel that something valuable has been lost and the ones who don't feel that way or feel that the improvements in workflow are compensating the degrading production quality. Add the element of "you ruining it for everybody" and you get the drama.

    • @unduloid
      @unduloid Год назад +7

      Old-school producers didn't just record their MPCs and push the tracks out the door without any post-processing. There will always be compressing, EQ'ing, mixing and mastering involved. Heck, the fact that most of the old stuff was recorded on analog tape will influence the sound, not to mention stuff like running the signal slightly hot through a mixing console, which might even have a valve circuit somewhere in its path.
      The new MPCs sound fine. Great, even. They're a lot less noisy, and if you're concerned about analog grit you could get yourself a second-hand Analog Heat I and record everything through it on its mildest setting. Works fine and doesn't break the bank.

    The Force is probably the single best piece of new gear, as far as what it's supposed to do and what it actually does, that i've ever bought.
    MPC/Force is a platform that continues to be developed, not abandoned like Korg did with Kronos.
    I don't think this sounds bad at all. If your music out of this thing sounds bad, you're incompetent.

    I played an MPC3000 (the first MPC I learned on), it did have a phat sound. It was my first sampler I had experience with and I was told you could get the sound of "anything", 16 bit CD quality which was basically considered perfect pristine sound quality. I didn't have the money for a 3000 and in 1997 the 2000 came out, which I could afford. 16 bit CD sound quality. I bought it. I quickly proceeded to sample my Boss DR 660, but I sort of noticed that the drums in the 2000 didn't seem to hit as hard as I remember to the 3000. I thought I was imagining things but one day a producer I worked with brought over his 3000 and gave me some of his drum disks, I remember playing my 2000 next to his 3000 and I noticed that his 3000 sounded waay more powerful than mine. It had a punchier, fatter bass, the high end was present but also clean. I felt almost cheated as I thought 16 bit CD quality meant everything would sound the same.
    That said I think the biggest differences (and an old magazine hinted at it was that the machines used different filters). As in the early-mid nineties, oversampling wasn't used and very expensive analog filters needed to be used (which inevitability added color to the sound). The MPC3000 went all out to make a high end filter. The 2000 was a stripped down version cost wise so one of the first places they cut costs were the filters which gave the 2000 a harsher/cryspier sound with a thinner low end.
    But at some point though oversampled converters started being used which negates the need for an expensive analog filter. This makes much more cleaner stuff nowadays, so I think that is a big Reason Akai (or anyone is failing to do this). Maschine attempted the 60 and the 1200 and even mentioned that they thought emulating other 16 bit drum machines wasn't worth it. That said I'm thinking alot of this stuff can be done with proper use of VST saturation, eq, and filters but most people dont want to take the time to do that. And really I'm at the point where I know that software might not sound as phat as some old school digital gear but I know the workflow is often many times better, with a ton more flexibility.
    But I think if Akai just took a bit of time to create a MPC3000 "mode" and made a good attempt, there would be happy users. I'm thinking we are probably at that point now as people are doing pretty faithful Moog, LA2A, Analog Tape, DX7 emulations, and older samplers such as the Fairlight, SP1200, MPC60, the 3000 would be next at some point.
    I think though the MPC3000 is somewhat of a niche market where most people just thought of it as a crude sampler and probably went for stuff like the ASR10 or a Rackmounted Sampler like the EMUs.
