    Great review...and much appreciated. I am of the same opinion as you as to the excitement of sanding PLUS I am of the same opinion as you on Festools as a general statement on their entire tool lineup. They are generally fine made tools but priced as heirlooms.

    Great review and rant Mike.
    It does look like it does a great job.
    We have Festool here in the UK and I walk straight past them mainly due to the initial cost price and their individuality to their own make for extras at their own individual prices.
    Take care my friend.
    Cheers, Huw

    Spot on Mike. Great review and I could not agree with you more. If I was to make a review of Festool (I own two of their products) it would be exactly the same as yours. I also own the Bosh sander and agree it is the best 6" random orbital out there, but I to need a 3" sander and I will most likely get the RO90.... even after your VERY honest review. Thanks again Mike. Great video.

      Thank you Paul! Obviously I bought one myself... I do refuse to pay $28 for a velcro pad, So I make my own. I bought a 3 1/2" hole saw that I use as a template. I place it on a 6" pad, whack it with a mallet a couple times, and then use a punch and an old piece of sandpaper as a temple for the dust holes. It only takes a couple minutes and It only costs me about $3.

    Amen brother on the size. Let me add one thing for anyone considering a Rotex for its versatility (both direct drive and DA modes). I purchased a 5 inch to strip the paint off a cabinet. It’s a miracle tool for that. But the DA function isn’t very good, it chatters almost all the time. Called Festool and they gave me some technique suggestions including turning the dust collector suction down. Nothing worked for me do they had me send it in. They overhauled it, including replacing the sanding pad that I damaged. No improvement. So be aware that direct drive mode is great but it’s not a good finish sander in DA mode. That was my experience anyway. I ended up buying a Festool ETS-EC and that solved my finish sanding problem.

    Great review and I feel same way about the accessories pricing. I switched to the Rotex and their palm sander a few years back mainly for the dust extraction. It was a tough pill to swallow but I have to admit, sanding is much more enjoyable now and in the long term the tool pricing is worth it at least for their sanding tools. In your video the dust looked minimal when using the Rotex on your bowl so hopefully with some time, you will acquire the taste for kool-aid. ;-)

    Hi, I enjoyed the review particularly since I am looking at the RO90 for my woodturning. Will you be making a follow on review of how it performs over time? I am a Festool owner and drank the Kool aid a long time ago with the product and ultimately have accepted the cost difference. However, it is the uniqueness of how you are applying the product to woodturning that caught my attention. Thanks again for the honest review. I also watch your channel because you also use a Robust American Beauty Lathe. Not necessarily an inexpensive piece of equipment, but a joy to use. Regards, Chuck

    I love my Bosch 6” too, it gets the job done fast! It’s big though. I don’t have any Festool tools but I have no doubt they are high quality and well balanced, I simply feel I must grow into one, buy one because the cost is justified by the utility.
    Furthermore, I believe we are somewhat spoiled by the massive amount of cheep goods coming from china.

    • @BrailsfordWoodworks
      @BrailsfordWoodworks  Год назад

      Thank you Randy! We may indeed be spoiled if you look at the industry as a whole. I would say, however, that the Festool prices are a far greater leap than can be accounted for by that. There is also the crazy prices for parts. I would also tell you, since I now have both, that your Bosch is every bit as good or better than the Festool. I would not feel like I had to work up from Bosch to Festool. I only got the Festool because of the size. I had to so some real soul searching before I bought it as well. Thanks again for watching and your comment! Have a great day!

    Great review! I’ve had my Festool ETS 150/5 sander for almost 10 years. It’s been an excellent 6” sander. That rotex should last you a long time. I agree that the Festool sanding pads and sandpaper are way overpriced so I always get different brands. Too bad there’s not another brand you can get the 3.5” pad from.

    Awesome video, thanks for making it. I'm looking at the Rotex 125 (thought about Mirka for a while, but I can't get my head around that paddle switch).
    My main use for the more aggressive sanding is on charcuterie boards I make. The live edge boards are quite rough. I have a planer and a drum sander, either of which take most of the roughness out,, but there's always a bunch of spots that need a hand sander. Also, if the Rotex is that good, maybe I could forget about the drum sander for some boards.My only concern is how difficult is it to use one-handed? I'm like you, read all the reviews, watch the RUclips tests, etc. Cheers

      @@BrailsfordWoodworks You know, I had looked at this sander long and hard and almost ordered it. It was on Amazon with about $25 off, but I missed the sale deadline and kind of forgot about it. I see it's on sale again (Amazon in Canada, where I am) about $27 off. I think I'll give it a try! I like the dual action similar to the Rotex. Thanks for mentioning it!

    Watch Festool live at noon episode 165 to learn about the tool. If you have the 3 mm it’s for fine sanding. The 5 mm is for fast removal of material. I have the 90 and the 125 5 lnch and wouldn’t trade them for any other brand. Enjoy the tool.

    The RO90 is a delta and a Rotex sanding tool with some really great accessories and functions you just can’t compare to the Bosch. They’re expensive but you’ve compared two completely different sanders.

    • @BrailsfordWoodworks
      @BrailsfordWoodworks  11 месяцев назад +1

      Disagree. Both sanders have a powered eccentric-orbit mode, as well as a random orbit mode. That makes them function exactly the same way. I use my RO90 almost every day. I like it, however the price is still not justifiable, especially for the accessories. $28 for an "interface" (velcro) pad is obscene. If Bosch had a three or three and a half inch sander I would have bought it for sure. Thanks for watching.

      @BrailsfordWoodworks  Год назад

      I actually said the sander is nice and does a fine job. However it is no better in, either quality or performance, than my Bosch. My really big complaint is the prices of the accessories, a velcro sanding pad (interface pad they call it) is $26. That is insane under any circumstance. Festool makes a fine tool, however they are no better than Makita, Milwaukee, or Bosch. It is a simple marketing ploy to price themselves so they appear to be a premium tool. I put Mirka into the same category.

  • @Teunstah
    @Teunstah 10 месяцев назад +1

    Yes, Festool is expensive.. they have a different business model of tools that actually last and are not built to fail in a a couple of years.
    About the sandpeper etc. try it a bit more, in my experience their sandpaper lasts much longer, as do their sandingpads.... So compare how many of those 2 dollar ones you burn through compared to the festool ones to get a real price instead of just looking at the upfront costs. And of course their is a lot of money earned/lost in how fast you can work with good tools, and getting into good system will save you a lot of time; not fiddling with a hoseclamp for your vacuum, not swapping paper every 5 minutes, less clean up and better health due to great dustcollection etc. it all adds up

    • @BrailsfordWoodworks
      @BrailsfordWoodworks  10 месяцев назад

      I use Klingspor paper, not cheap paper. I use a Fein Dust extractor, not a cheap tool. To not want to pay $28 for a 3.5" velcro interface pad, in my opinion, is just being sensible. Thanks for watching.

    • @Teunstah
      @Teunstah 10 месяцев назад

      @@BrailsfordWoodworks I didn't say anything about you using cheap paper or tools... I just said that *in my experience* their paper lasts longer that what I've used (never used klingspor, so wouldn't know.
      But, given this video is 8 months old, how did the 28 dollar pad behave? did it last, did you go through it as fast as the 2 dollar ones? Is there any justification for the price?

    • @BrailsfordWoodworks

    • @BrailsfordWoodworks
      @BrailsfordWoodworks  Год назад

      Not sure I entirely agree. It is a very good tool, but I do not think it worth twice what it costs for a Bosch. Also the $28 sanding pad is insanely priced. It did sand the bowl well, and I use it as much as I can. It does have limitations. It can not do a deep bowl on the inside. I think this is a market that Festool or Bosch should approach, tools especially for wood turning. Thanks for watching!

    Bosch isnt what they used to be. Nothing like it actually. Comparing Bosch to Festool is ludicrous in the current climate. If the fact that the ro90 is 3.5 inches and it makes you mad why didnt you just buy the 5 or 6 inch rotex? Also the ro90 has the ability to switch to a delta style head which makes the versatility of the ro90 in a league of its own. Not throwing shade. Festool is stupidly priced, but idk how you got this particular sander if you went into this purchase knowing what you already knew.

    • @BrailsfordWoodworks
      @BrailsfordWoodworks  5 месяцев назад

      Easy... I took a lot of heat saying that I never tried a Festool. Now I have. Also for what I primarily use the tool for, wood turning, I can not use the 5 or 6 inch sander. I also must respectfully disagree about the quality of Bosch tools. I have several and they have been very solid.

    Dont be donkey , you know why is your bosh not flat on the surface.. keep your pad always flat, don’t let the masculine lay on the flat when not using. Amateur. Festool are amazing; but for working overhead the rotes is not ideal; than even Mirka or ets etc 125 with 125mm and 150mm switchable backing pad
