  • "A fifth-grader says he was terrified when a police officer pointed a gun at him and his friends while they built a tree fort.
Omari Grant, 11, said he and his friends often play in a wooded area behind his home and were building a fort when a neighbor in the next subdivision called police to complain about what the boys were doing.
But no one anticipated what Omari and his mother say happened next."* Desi Doyen (Green News Report), John Iadarola (TYT University) and Jayar Jackson break it down.

People say that racism doesn't exist anymore but really it just evolved. Smh you would think that the USA would have changed drastically but really it's only a few steps from when there was slavery "I am going to stop calling you a white man and I'm going to ask you to stop calling me a black man, the only way to get rid of slavery is to stop taking about it," Morgan Freeman

Black people aren't blaming "whites" in America for the past, they are blaming them for the present that you seem to be blissfully unaware of. They are blaming the system of racism, you wont even acknowledge exists.
And here you are crying about nasty insults, when black people in your country are profiled from children and are falling through the cracks, left to wallow in poverty, with lack of access to social and education services that are afforded to "white" areas; then killed off.
You people are nuts! And this is coming from another "white" person.

Valsigplays .Valcrin Stating that something isn't about race is completely dismissive. I've witnessed cases in which cops reacted to minorities in a different manner than whites and this type of behavior exists. Does the blue wall of silence come before race? Sure, but lets not pretend race is no longer an issue in the US or that those with authority cannot be racist. The dismissal of the possibility of racism is the same as being ignorant about this world.

    If a US citizen were to emigrate to Australia the second they get off the plane their chances of being killed by a gun drops 9.7 times, that breaks down as follows;
    - Chance of being murdered by a gun drops 27.7 times.
    - Likelihood of suicide by gun drop 8.6 times.
    - The chance of accidentally killing yourself drops 4.28 times.
    - The murder rate (per 100k) in the US is 4.8 compared to Australia's 1.0.
That last point is interesting because it follows a trend where more guns don't just equal more gun deaths, but countries with more guns tend to also have more violence and murder from other means as well. I'll let you think about the psychological underpinnings of that.

I been stopped/pulled over 16 times times from the age of 12-18 i have never sold drugs smoked weed NONE OF IT.
I've been in japan 10 years and have never been talked to by the police one single time. matter fact i was stopped once by a japanese police officer to take a picture during a festival. cause he thought I looked cool lol..

I had a lot of white friends growing up and they would always say "dude why are you being stopped so much?" one of them who asked WAS a damn drug dealer and said he had never been stopped in his life.

If you've lived in Japan, you've also probably noticed that armed cops in Japan wanting to talk to you don't nearly make you as nervous. A lot of that has to do with the fact that those cops are actually held accountable for their actions. Not so much in the US.

    • @terribletoothache
      @terribletoothache 10 лет назад +42

Exactly, these stereotypes and profiling methods are painful and humiliating experiences for the people bearing them and are self-fulfilling prophecies as people lose respect for the police and the wider establishment and the humiliation causes them to try to regain their pride in other ways. Violence breeds violence so bringing violence to a particular community brings out more violence within it.

Even if they did, the cops would probably be reluctant to respond. If they did respond, they would not have pulled a gun on some white kids as a first resort. This is textbook racialized policing.
But beyond the question of race, there is the property issue. What gives a cop the right to trespass on private property when they have neither a warrant nor PC to suspect them of committing a crime? Nevermind the fact that they were simply a group of 11 year olds building a tree house.

Imagine being eleven and having to be afraid of police cause they pulled a gun on you for playing. That police officer might of destroyed their spark and interest in going into a Stem field later in life. And these kind of police officers give good cops a bad name. I've met so many good cops who go the extra mile to help troubled youth and volunteer in their free time to community events. I hope this officer is fired.

Odds are, the people who did this act are either on the run or in jail. So should MSNBC or TYT report on each and every crime that happens. The reason why they are talking about this case is because the police (after being told it was just some kids building a treehouse) came out with guns drawn. So in your above case. Once they find the people that did this, there will be justice. But with the police officer, we don't know if there will be. If I was a betting man, the answer would be no.

And there are always cops with guns everywhere, it's just that most of the times guns aren't necessary even to be considered. Here is what they should have done, talked to the kids and said. "Hello, are your parents around?" And then gone and talked with the children's parents about the concerns of the neighbors.
B: Why the hell are the neighbors calling the police on a couple of kids building a three house in their own back yard, they should also have gone to the children's parents and voiced their concern there, not immediately called the police. Do no one talk with one another anymore?

This case illustrates how important it is to demand police officers wear a small video camera and record all of their interactions with the public. This would deter behavior like this and protect police if they are accused of wrongdoing. So it's a win win for everybody.

That would really suck for cops who like to whup a dumbass upside the head, you know, only when he needs it.

Yeah, but they WILL figure out a way to turn them off somehow so they can abuse their power. Granted, yes, this is a good first step I am just mentioning what they will DEFINITELY do in response to this.

the issue of them being switched off during a event needs to be made punishable otherwise they are not gonna respect it.

So the neighbour calls the cops saying she was concerned for the kids' safety and so the cops immediately pull their guns? Can anyone explain to me how this makes the kids safer?

Lawsuit Kid, then after getting a million dollar settlement you build a badass mother fucking tree house and your neighbors will sit there and look at it every day.

      Skylar Garrett
People who are hopefully going to get so sick of their tax dollars being used for shit like this that it actually kicks them out of their apathy and makes them do something about the fact that the police force seems determined to recruit bullies.

Tell that to Andy Lopez after he got shot in the head... This power abuse shit happens every fucking week, and it's been like that for YEARS. And you're saying it's all made good if you get money in return? Shit, the reality that the people in power rountinely abuse us with their power merits a better response than "Well, if you're gonna do that you have to give me some money."

Skylar Garrett I rather have it go to this kid than private prisons, drone strikes, war, etc etc, They already closing schools and libraries, so yeah. Anything else?

So people now call police because they're "concerned" about the safety of other children when they're building tree forts. Has this society forgotten about just shutting the fuck up and letting things fly sometimes? Even if the kid had gotten hurt, he would have learned a very valuable life lesson about safety.

In the year of 2012 the entire German police force fired a total of 104 shots. That includes 54 warning shots and 14 shots on objects. In April of 2012 the LAPD shot 90 times in *one* incident.
Germany's population is around 1/4 of the USA's population.

I totally agree with you! I used to live in California and have since moved to southern Germany three years ago. Before in the US I was always intimidated by the police. I really don't know why, but I was always afraid of them since I was quite young. However, in Germany every time I see a police officer, I don't feel like how I felt in the US. The police officers here are overall very respectful, know their laws well, and make you genuinely feel that they are there to protect their citizens. You Germans must be doing something right!

the actual wording from the kid is what worries me. "i dont want to be shot today" he didnt say i dont want to be shot he said today as in this kid who is only 11 has already thought about and got it into his mind that at some point in his life hes probably going to get shot. im glad i live in the uk. not once has any story like this come out. firstly fuck the neighbour its absolutely none of your concern and definitly not even a police matter. secondly what sane person pulls a gun on an 11 year old because hes building a fort. if i was their chief of police id immediatly look into it and fire them,
