So cool to see the Sticker i made in my bedroom is now on a million dollar machine half way across the globe.
it really costs one million?
What sticker is that
Half
So awesome! The new shop is great. We remember watching you in your garage. Crazy how far you guys have come.
You can build an insulated enclosure around the compressor and eliminate a lot of noise. Just put a small vent in the bottom and leave it open on top for ventilation.
Some noise-dampening material on the walls and ceiling will help a lot in a big open space full of machinery like that.
Rockwool covered with white cloth made of fireresistant cotton is what they need.
Accoustic panels are just that, rockwool, sometimes a layer of foam but foam burns way too good.
22:30 right in the feels. Watched the entire way. Love the snowball effect of hard work and a good product. The moment I can afford one I'm going on that list.
8 years behind you... Thanks for sharing your journey, it helps so much to see how you got there... 3rd tormach is going to join the family soon if that gives you a gage.
Jeebus... really? That's awesome, man! I need to make a plan to do something big too.
Excellent. Once again I say do a journey video showing clips through the years gone by way back from when you first uploaded to RUclips working in the small garage workshop to where you are now. Well done John, your vision is finally here.
Looks awesome. Enjoy the new digs, and we’re all wishing you the best as your business grows!
This is the excitement I've always had when a new machine comes in. Nice to see the parts and stickers i saw at EMO now at your place.
May your new machines and place be blessed!
Greetings from Germany🇩🇪
I was so blown away when you moved into your last shop. Now that seems like you were still in your garage. It seems like just yesterday you moved into your last shop. This just feels so real, but so not at the same time. Who knows where you're going to be in the next couple years.
Grimsmo moonbase by 2050!
@22:22 probably one of the coolest videos of yours I’ve seen. Very cool to see you grow from the little red mill to your brand new big red! Way to go Grimsmo and team! Proud to see great CanMfgCon 👍💪👌😎🤙
Actually I’m not sure if your first mill was red or perhaps grizzly green, but I remember seeing the first few episodes of knife making tuesdays and seeing you in full polar fleece freezing your ass off in your garage, in pursuit of this vision. Again congrats! 🎉
@@matter9 Grizzly green! Thanks Spencer!
Well done John and crew the workshop is a great achievement, it's a credit to you all.
Well done. Had to go through 3 machine moves all 100+ machines not easy. Nice feeling when its done and it looks nice already.
One of the most inspiring stories I must say, and have posted on my FB page, and going to share as will in a few minutes on our YT channel. Also watched your life story with your interview with Titan CNC, and now hooked on watching your company and employee's grow. Great to see our younger generation go out an grap the Bull by it's Horns! 60 yrs ago I got my first pocket knife. A shoe box filled with 50 pluse will be passed down to my grandskids,,Thx John, going out to the shop and continue to plumb on my Rong-Fu...Bear @ Bears Rod Shop
Congratulations John and the team at Grimsmo Knives!
I’ve been following you for a long time. So happy for you! It’s nice to see good people being happy doing what they love to do.
You've done an incredible job, John. To build all of that from nothing, doing what you love is something we would all wish for but very few achieve. I'm super jealous 😅 maybe one day I'll start down my own path. I'd be a very proud man in your shoes. You've accomplished your worth
Awesome! It's great to see the progress and growth. Thanks for showing beginners what is possible.
How many knives do you have to sell to be able to buy a friggin Kern!? Also thank you for being one of the few machining channels with machines other then boring Haas verticals!
Well, he's on like around 3300 of the norseman, at $900 a pop to start off with that is at least 3 million in sales. Add in the versions that guy for more and the task that has sold at least a few hundred then hasn't been doing too bad.
Id say he needs to start doing some jobshop work soon or come out with another hit knife before things eventually start tapering off.
@@jp3354 I could see a market for 10,000 Norsemen over the next few years, but you're right. Another hit design (in addition to the Rask) is probably needed.
And having hiedenhain! That's huge! Wait til he learns the control and figures out the full capabilities. I'm excited.
Judging by the serial numbers, they did sell stuff for about 4,000,000$ since the start. Their previous shop was really small and optimized, so the rent costs were pretty good. But even with that, considering time, employees, taxes, machines, materials, it will still be quite a bit of money on a table. But definitively adding external work, some new knife models, and optimizing production even further is probably a paramount. I guess the sales are probably still climbing, but they will eventually saturate, or even go down, unless some other stuff are done, including marketing using other channels. The KERN Micro Vario should increase productivity a lot - pallets can be loaded, and machine can work non stop, including night and weekend. So that is good.
Consider also endorsements.
Saunders gets payed a lot to do infomercials.
I bet he made a deal with Kern sales. After all, he's got the demo version of the Kern.
That ending was short and sweet, but gotta say what a journey. Great work and happy for you and the team. Been watching you for some years now and it makes me excited to see what can come out of little!
New shop is amazing!! You deserve it so much, you've worked hard for it. Now hurry up and get Rask production going so you can finally get started on a torch. That's the product I really want.
Dude, living the dream. You've earned it. All those long days and nights working hard is paying off. Congratulations. How long do you think this space will be big enough? Look how John S has grown and his nearly empty shop is getting full.
Put an extra wide shelf underneath the window with a reflector to bounce light onto the ceiling. Free lighting.
wtf. same idea :D
I work at a very large auto parts manufacturing company and i enjoy watching the rapid rate of progress of grimsmo knives once youre a very established company you dont see progress at this rate makes me excited wish i was there helping haha
I cant wait to see more from this shop especially seeing how you tool up and use the kern
You've come a long way since the garage, congrats! Hard work and determination pays off 👏👏
John, I can't wait to see what you do with the Kern. I for one would love to see some long form videos on the Kern like you did with the Tornos, maybe even some live streams, just set up a camera and go.
The filming and editing have improved so much lately. The videos are so entertaining, thank you very much
Oh I just noticed the HSMS. I have 2 of the them almost same same. Really nice machines, they have full glass scale feedback so eve as the ball screw wears it will automatically compensate for backlash, wear etc. Brilliant controls too. Heidenhains are the best of the best.
Wow looks like I missed a little bit. Last time I watched you had the tormach in your garage and sometimes had a helper. Congrats to you and your team
Congrats! Really tho. I was watching your old videos in your garage and you’ve grinned and now your in a beautiful shop.
I’ve been watching you for 10ish years, Great to see where you have made it to!
Don't forget to share some of the layout and work on the assembly side of the shop as well. Very interested to learn and see how that is laid out. Thanks for another great video. R.J.
Congratulations, nice to see your successful business growing!
Thanks for sharing your journey
DC
That window will not be removed or renewed. Because John is gonna sit up there, and yell out that little hole: "WORK FASTER!!" :D
Love the new shop!
Man John.. that shop is just beautiful... i am so happy for you! thoes two mills you got are super awesome... and the kern is just pure sexyness.
Congrats John. I've been watching your videos since you were operating out of your garage with the Tormach, and it's great to see how much you've grown.
Congrats on the new shop!!! It looks awesome. Keep the great videos coming, I enjoy every minute of them.
You better have lots of liquidity with all that money in those machines and new shop. With this virus shutting the whole world down things are going to get very very tight when you are making and selling high dollar non essentials. I am in the same boat. Good luck man.
Congrats John, clearly a result of very hard work!
Wow! Great Adventure in Wintertime. ...like your new Shop :-)
That's awesome. Congrats!!
I am incredibly happy for all of you at Grimsmo Knives!
If i was in that Office, i would shout out of that window: WORKE MOORE!!! AND FASTER!.. and smoke my cuban cigar.. Very nice job you guys. Been watching you from your early beginings in garage and this is just an epic level of your job shop. Maybe There is some legendary? Enjoy your machines.
Congrats on the move! I have been watching your business grow for quite a while. Happy for you and your team to turn your passion into a successful business.
I've been subbed for years, since you were in your garage. I've never bought anything but I've followed your journey pretty much all the way John. I'm very happy and proud of your success, kudos bro. Where the hell is your brother?
Nice shop, and a nice KERN-micro. :) we have one in our shop also. A bit different configuration of course. A very precise and stable machine. I'm courious on what you are going to do with it.
Your giddiness is infectiously brilliant, love your kid living his best ever Christmas energy and love what your doing, u deserve all the success and seem like a great man and boss, totally look forward to every episode to get my Grimsmo fix, could keep singing you and your teams praises but gotta get back to work, keep up the good work and hope you have more of the quality content, peace brother...
I can't believe that you guys made it. 12 years ago when I had a shop and I was selling plasma cutters. One die maker person came and said do you know how many die makers were in Kitchener a few years ago? He said 300 now there are 3. Most cnc shops were struggling and I thought it's not possible to make any money here. I knew Rob. He was really good at cnc machining an had a business for a while making amazing things with his cnc machine but he too stopped. He sold his equipment for a fraction of the price it was worth. He teaches cnc courses at Mohawk not too far from you. You might know him.
Awesome John, you have a lot to be proud of.
ATB, Robin
Natural light is so nice.
Fraser, wide-angle lens please, everything is done by tele lens, ppl love to watch around when John is talking
well done too you all hard work but the end result is all there to see
The place looks great and plenty of space to grow. So happy for you and congrats in the new workplace.
The quintessential _American Dream._ That's so awesome. Do you still drive the Volva? That's incredible that it's still going. Tint the windows. You can find them with ceramic tint to block the heat but allot transmission of visible light.
@John Smith Canadia is in North America. They're just USians that didn't reject the Crown.
So happy and proud of you guys. I’ve been on your coat tails from day 1. ROCK STARS! Jack
I folloved you when you did scales and trying out anodising alu. Awesome journey
So happy for you and your guys, John =) Really awesome new shop!
Honestly, get that Kaeser in a place for itself. Build a wall around it or something. That noise will get to someone eventually and drive them insane =)
Cheers from New Zealand. I like the German and Swiss high quality machines! I love your work.
Have you ever tried sweeping compound and a dust mop?
They used it when I was at Boeing.
Leaves the floor squeaky clean ,literally.
Also are you fixed up for fire extinguishers and first aid kits? I don't know if you're going to get workplace inspectors coming through saying 'thou shall', but they're a pretty small investment to take care of your folks and your machines.
This is so encoraging to not stop working for your dreams... Machinist here.
Nice. Looking forward to some in-depth on the Kern.
crazy remembering your garage setup and seeing where your at now. well done man
The first video I watched of your's was the one where you we're selling a milling machine that you had converted into a CNC. I was getting into knife making and wanted one to make finger guards. That was awhile back. Still haven't bought a table top mill. I looked for that video but couldn't find it. I wanted to post it to a group I belong to. THOR.
IR filters on the windows to prevent heating while keeping the light
Other option is light redirecting film. I believe 3M and Serralux are producing nice ones. It is amazing tech. You need to contact them directly, because which film to choose is very location and orientation dependent, but it works nice.
happiness on your face when you look inside grimsmo kern tool cabinet xD
Watch out for that daylight! It may cause thermal expansion on the side of the machine exposed to it!
production quality so good you need a makeup dept next
Congrats on this next step on your journey
I just received my Saga is it supposed to be one color. (Titanium) i was hoping for heat treatments blue, gold, violet not just silver.
Great job ! I run two CNC lathes in Seattle both with live tooling fun stuff. I wish the shop was as clean as yours they don't seem to concerned with that unfortunately.
So cool! I love this! I’ve been watching your videos since you started in the garage, I’m so impressed! Keep up the amazing inspiring work! Tris from the UK
Love your new editor and these long format videos. The only problem I have nownis fixing time to watch them ;)
cool, well done that you don’t stop and constantly develop
Very nice - you inspired me to learn cnc machining and by a mini mill years ago!
You have room to build the kitcar in the corner now :)
So pumped for you guys. Congratulations.
If you dont mind me asking , how much did it cost ?
Thanks
Hi John i'm new to your channel and i like what i see . I'm into more manual machining than any type of cnc. But always willing to learn . One question is do you know a good used machine tool dealer in the upper mid west ? Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks
Congratulations on your new shop best of luck !
You guys have come a long way!
Very well deserved sir! Killer set up.
You have something great going there. Great job with your shop set up! I am on my way to taking over my family owned machine shop lots of hard work and long hours pay off. I would love some advice from a younger machine shop owner I’m 26 and have been in the same trade since I was 14 I have 6 years till my father is dropping it in my hands but am finally in the position to make some decisions. I am looking for new innovative ways to make money. We run a 25 man shop and have great equipment we do about 6 million in sales a year but plan on going bigger but would really appreciate any advice and guidance I can get.
If the noise from the compressor is what I can hear in the video maybe a little room built around it with some insulation would be a quick way to make it quiet.
Congratulations you have worked hard and you deserve this
still in the garage :) your story is truly inspiring :)
Amazing space. This is what I want for my woodworking space!
I guess you ended up seeing the Lav mic.
Andrew Delashaw first few clips didn’t have them but John replied that the batteries died so I defeated
Deleted
Could you have had grip put into the epoxy floors? I think Saunders are grippy, no?
B.O.M episode something or other...
Good work John
Awesome place.
Kick ass john!!!! Doing great and love what you're doing!!!!
I think I'm missing a piece of the puzzle here... How is it possible to invest literally millions of dollars in machines (and their tooling and accessories!), AND pay the rent for an industrial space each month AND pay 7 or 8 people's salary, while making such a limited quantity of not so expensive (assuming a 1k range) pocket knives? Are you secretly making 20 per day? Cause that would seem possible with this kind of setup.
With that top end Kern and Tornos maybe we get some Grimsmo watches?
Congrats... By the way how much kern cost you..
"So much room for activities!"
Why am I hearing power tools?
Waiting impatiently for a video on your epic new Kern!
Nice layout
Awesome shop!
I look forward to the video in three years that's like "we built a new shop because we have three interns in this room that used to be where we stored our foam and knife boxes".
I want to purchase the kern evo , I thinks its the smallest one they do.
