  • The Real Cost of Cheap Wood | Wood Industry | Business Documentary from 2017
When 15 - 30% of the timber sold worldwide is thought to be illegal, how sustainable is the wood used in Ikea’s products? The company claims it only uses responsibly-sourced materials but - as this investigation reveals - some of their sub-contractors are pillaging Romania’s ancient forests. In Indonesia, APP plantations have caused widespread pollution. This investigation, filmed in Sweden, France, Romania and Indonesia, investigates the real cost of cheap wood.

If the punishment is a fine, then there is no true punishment for violating laws, it is merely a cost of doing business - with the fine being the government's way of participating in and condoning the activity.
Governments allow this to happen. They even make money off of this behavior in the form of fines. If they actually wanted to stop this behavior, there would be actual consequences.

I don't know how it pays off to use large solid wood in order to make particle board instead of use it as planks... Here, where I live, in Serbia (just across the boarder), small beach wood, used as a fuel, costs maybe 50-60 EUR a cubic meter, whereas solid wood beach boards cost around 600 EUR. It's like they were supposed to use copper but were using gold instead.

That Home Depot wood is from farmed trees. That's why it warps. Old growth trees have tightly packed fibers that makes it a better product.

Excellent job! And, this is a huge problem that most people are totally unaware of. I think that you should step up your efforts to boycott sellers whose supply chains are causing deforestation. You are doing a great job. But, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Wood is great and it can be sustainable if we all decide to enforce it. Also, sustainable wood sourcing will create good jobs and prosperity - even for the countries whose forests are currently being violated. Carry on your excellent work!

The biggest problem is YOU the bargain hunter, the I don't want to pay mega bucks for furniture people or people on a budget, unfortunately many can't afford solid wood furniture so they go for something like Ikea, that is affordable for the masses. Particle board or chipboard is ok in cheap furniture but it can be weak and is often just thrown away when it breaks. It was originally designed to use up waste from manufacturing which is a brilliant use for it, but It was found that better strength, appearance and resin economy could be achieved by using more uniform manufactured chips. These manufacturers began processing solid birch, beech, alder, pine and spruce into consistent chips and flakes, who according to this film don't care where that wood comes from, at the end of the day they have to feed the monster (manufacturer) and people at the bottom of the food chain just want money to survive.

4:55 - just like on another side of Carpathians, in Ukraine. The government put a ban on export of unprocessed logs to discourage illegal logging + favour domestic furniture-makers. But no lesser person that head of the European Comission, Junker, demanded the ban to be lifted - otherways Ukraine will be sanctioned for the breach of its EU trade association + general WTO treaty commitments. This is HOW the EU actually protects the environment!

These documentary types of shows offer a lot of over dramatized dirt for very little hard solutions. I'll be watching just the same. And by the way, my granny was born and raised in what is called a "dugout" on the open prairie of Kansas. Soddies were the best but required much more effort and time. Poles for the roof were miles away and cost a lot.
Why do people want to live totally above ground on the prairies now is beyond my comprehension.
Keep planting the trees and maybe man's lame morals will eventually catch up.

I own business in wood industry and I can tell you they got couple of things wrong, those logs in first half of the video and those huge ones. Those trees are better cut because they suck all the energy in the forest and covering sunlight for smaller trees. Also you can see black hart in those beech logs especially huge in huge ones that would be use mostly for firewood or one time use pallets. So its low grade wood , very low grade. I don't like that they don't ask for papers of wood. They should ask for FSC wood

Using chipboard intead of real wood is more profitable for Ikea, and othe similar companies, mainly because the furniture lasts only a few years. So they sell other time , this makes deflorestation, and theyr profit, bigger.

People coveted having huge houses in this country without any true need , except opulence. This was going for decades. Tearing up good farmland to escape crime ridden cities. Until the heart changes, nature suffers no rest. Bad idea. Housing is necessary. But not wasteful consumption. Could have both, but eventually not this way.

I'm sorry to say this but the reporter who interviewed the IKEA guy did a terrible job. I understand that it's hard to keep your cool when you interview a guy like this but somebody with a better argumentative logic and better command of the language could do better.
    Still a great documentary nevertheless.

Consumerism is driving all this furniture companies or any other companies that cater to consumers demand. If people can reduce the demand for things, then these companies will in turn produce less. People can look for old furniture on internet like Carousell , craiglist, yard sales or stores that sell old recycles. Use cloth instead of paper towel to clean. If only we can reduce ,minimise, recycle, repair.

Just a couple things about trees , many types need to be harvested or they will die , around here I have birch on my land that is that large and I can assure you they are not 200 yrs old . . Anyway I think people should buy used vintage furniture , if a bookcase lasted 100 yrs it will go another 100

There argument makes no sense. If it’s A plus wood they would ant use it for that. The mill probably makes all kinds of boards if it’s more profitable. If you want to make a argument if there not replanting trees sure then that makes sense. Everyone watching this video has furniture and lives in a house made of wood.
