    Had this lens for a couple of days now and tried in on a wedding - was very pleased with the results, especially its low light AF performance was very satisfying!

    This or samyamg 24 1.8?

      That's going to be up to the buyer. I like both lenses quite a bit; I own the Samyang and I'm very happy with it.

    Thanks for the astro tests! I appreciate the extra effort needed to take those. I hope these Sigma lenses eventually come out for Canon RF, if and when Canon finally decides to license third party manufacturers for their system. But with the cozy relationship between Sony, Sigma and Leica that might never happen.

      It's quite weird to me how restrictive Canon has been with third party lenses.

      @@DustinAbbottTWI At the photgraphic fair in delhi - the overwhelming mirrorless users were mainly Sony & there is a growing market for tamron & samyang. Sigma is more for a specialized audience. Marriage & event photography/videography is huge here and canon is not able to convert its earlier dslr share to mirrorless because of its restrictions on 3rd parties.

    Nice review Dustin…I truly enjoy your takes and overall analysis of various lens and cameras of course. I have the SL2S with the 45mm f/2.8 DG DN C line ( I believe non “i” series) but same type solid metal compact construction. I am very pleased with this lens. I’m looking at this lens or the older 24mm f/1.4 ART that goes for not much more money. I read mixed reviews on the ART lens and definitely is much larger and heavier! The other option for the L mount is the new Panasonic Lumix S 24mm f/1.8… a bit more expensive but doesn’t have the f/ stop manual ring like the Sigma DG DN. It seems that based on your reviews you are inclined more to this lens… Don’t want to fork for L glass expense and size! Cheers..

      I would definitely recommend this lens. It's one of my favorites in the series.

      Both lenses are excellent optically. The Samyang has perhaps the tiniest optical edge, while the Sigma has the better build.

    Adorama has this lens for $449 (and the Sigma 45mm f/2.8 for $229) right now. Very excited to try it!

    The question is... this Sigma or the Samyang 24 f/1.8? (build quality aside) ... or maybe the Sony 20mm G?

      Check out Christopher Frost RUclips. He does a amazing comparison of seven 24 mm lenses. I love him and Dustin for reviews

      All three are solid choices. I'm using the Samyang because I had already added it and I'm quite happy with it.

      @@DustinAbbottTWI Hi Dustin, what do you think of this lens against the Loxia 25? Of course Loxia is slower and manual focus, there is that. But in terms of microcontrast, pop etc. what would you recommend. I like wide for environmental portraits where you also get some gentle bokeh...thank you.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  3 года назад +1

      The Loxia lenses have some of the best color rendition on the Sony platform, but for most photographers it is really hard for me to recommend them over a lens like this. The autofocusing lens is just so much more practical...and considerably cheaper, too.

      @@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you for your quick reply, appreciate it. I am ok with manual focussing but agree with you on practicality especially the cameras are so good with autofocus now..

    what do you think about this lens vs batis 25? in my place batis second hand is cheaper than this lens since many people sold it and bought GM

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  2 года назад +1

      The auto focus of the newer Sigma will be better, but the Batis remains a very nice lens optically

    The sigma I series is really a fusion of compact designer aesthetics and quality optics that work with high resolution modern sensors. On the other hand within a year there are so many more 24mm lenses for the Fe mount. I was at the photographic/video fair today in Delhi and got a chance to use the samyang 24/1.8. I really liked the rendering & it is at half the price. Both lenses donot have the semi macro which I think the tamron does better than the 3.5 sigma. I was speaking to the tamron technical person who explained a little bit of the science involved to get the semi macro and precision AF at 2.8. He said that they could not put a larger (eg rxd motor) into such a tiny lens. However he said that the motor was meant to focus precisely at mfd which has been my experience. I just think that the choice we now have is amazing - all offering their own particular signature and differentiated range and design.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  3 года назад

      I agree on the uniqueness of the different designs, and yes, the Samyang is a favorite of mine.

      @@DustinAbbottTWI To test their lenses they had a model wearing the most elaborate kind of ornate intricate attire with tiny glass (the desgner attire probaby costs more than my camera!). I was so surprised to see the detail the samyang got wide open - that too at a distance of over 3 meters & in bad lighting. It would be very interesting to compare the pure optics of the 2 lenses.

    I like sigma not only make big heavy prime now. Good to see they make compact and lightweight prime and zoom lens for mirroless.

    I wonder how this at f2 compares to 24mm Sony GM at f2. Or 24mm Sony G with both at f2.8. (In terms of sharpness/CA)

    How do these 24's work on a crop Sony? I like 24 but also like 35.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  3 года назад

      They seem to work fine. Gone are the days when lenses didn't work as well on APS-C because of the pixel density of the sensor. They are all designed around high resolution sensors these days.
