A rare look into Coach Hunter's match-up zone that he has used since the 90s! Comment below with any questions! Great stuff! Loved the explanations and examples. Looking to use this out of a 3-2 set, but it works the same! Might simplify the principles a bit for my players as they continue to develop their BBIQ
Thanks! We actually played it out of a 3-2 setup as well and the principles are pretty much the same like you said. Let me know if you have any questions.
Hey Coach, Ron Hunter says that he has only 3 rules in his zone that he won’t reveal (obviously). These rules make it so that the zone can look different on each possession. Any idea what those rules are? I am teaching at the middle school level but have not left out the possibility of transitioning up. I want a system that makes my teams competitive despite some athletic disadvantages.
Great question. I think I speak to this in the video with the basics of a match-up zone. Those are the "rules" I used and after breaking down film it seems they are using. I don't know his rules verbatim because he hasn't shared them, but I think the reason it could look different each possession is predicated on what the offense is doing.
Hey Coach, When you were teaching this, what kinds of drills did you do in practice to simulate movements in the zone? My team struggles with that stunt on the wing to retreat and cover the corner 3.
Sure, send me your email. They are also listed in the description below the video: MATCH-UP ZONE BASICS -COMMUNICATE! -Cutters Switch/Pass cutters Talk touch talk, Point and Pass, etc.. -On ball defender man-to-man principles stay on any downhill movement pass off dribbling around the perimeter or stay and rotate. -Ball screen: switch or (choice: soft hedge) Screen away from ball: switch (cutter principles

@@GetBetterBasketball will do! really looking at this to be our primary defense
great video Coach!
Thanks!
Have you ever seen a run and jump press and fall back into a zone?
Yes we did it back to a match up zone. Similar to using a zone press back to M2M. You just have to rep it. It works well though.
