  • Here we see GWR 60xx, 6024 King Edward I storm through Didcot Parkway, twice! She put on a great performance on the outward journey with her whistling all the way through the platform, with the pannier in the DRC joining in! On the way back she was also absolutely bombing it and she put on a great show for us again! I absolutely enjoyed the show she put on and I look forward to her back on the mainline!
    Thanks Everyone who got this video to 1,000 views! It means a lot, if you want to see more videos like this and more, subscribe and I'll try even harder to bring you the best steam videos from the GWML! :)
    Edit 11/01/2013 Thanks to everyone who has now got this video to over 10,000 views, I'm honoured that so many people would watch my video, thank you very much!

    Watch the bloke with the little lad as the last coach passes on the first run. That's me and my son who there by coincidence. He had asked to watch some trains - we got more than we bargained for!! I have never seen a steam engine doing more than 25mph before. To sit down at that level just behind the yellow line was incredible. We were there for some HST's too - and what is noticeable is the hammerblow effect of the steamer. Many thanks for capturing this great memory.

    As kids, my young brother and in were in awe of the GWR big 'uns. Further more, going to St. Ives every year for our holidays was a engine spotter's dream - Paddinton, Reading, Exeter, Newton Abbott (a double header for the Devon Banks to Plymouth), Plymouth, Truro. Change at St. Erth God's for one of the most beautiful branch linse in the country for the run into St Ives. God's Wonderful Railway.

    Bristolian inward bound at 17;30 hrs my house was 150 yards from "the bridge" I used to go and stand on to watch her pass by South Moreton, just past Moreton Cutting, I also worked on this station (Didcot) as letter boy at 15 waiting to be 15 and a half to enter the railway workshops to start my apprenticship, Didcot/Reading/Swindon and finally OOC, lost count on how many times I saw the Bristolian, also have to thank "King Edward I" for doubling my money, mysteriously made my half pennies turn into full blown pennies that worked for a while on the chewing gum machines in South Moreton shop.

    Reminds me of being taken 'train spotting' at Didcot when I was about 5 or 6; express passenger trains were much rarer then, and I think most of the trains were slow passenger together with a lot of freight; however 'an express' which could very well have been hauled by a King, shot through, to our great excitement (and not getting the number!). I've never really got the hang of train spotting tbh...

    I too used to 'train spot' the steam locos at Didcot station, probably about the same age as well. I also admit to trying to throw conkers down the chimney's from over vauxhall bridge. I went on to work on the footplate at Reading but on Diesels unfortunately. As you say, the experience of being on the platform when they thundered through was something that diesels could never never match.

  • @InterCityExpress125
    @InterCityExpress125  11 лет назад +1

    As a child of this day and age I feel rather 'ripped off' all we get these days are diesels that aren't very exciting at all, I wish I could have been at Didcot back in the days of steam, watching the Kings and Castles rocketing through, I'm just glad I could record footage like this in the 21st Century, just a little reminder of a bygone age. Thank you for sharing your memories.

You defiantly picked the right day to come and watch the trains. Steam at full speed beats everything hands down, in my opinion. If the electrification goes ahead, they'll become a rare thing through Didcot, So I would get out to see them more often. Thanks for watching. Andy

      @@1chish I was at the Apprentice Training School, was in the first batch 1963, finished up at OOC London, left in 1967 to join P&O Arcadia, spent 2 years there then went to Aussie to live, went to Bougainville Island and from there delivered a supply vessel to Panama, travel up to Canada, worked in BC, went to Calgary and got hired for oil rig work living in Singapore, rig was in Indonesia, great days when a tradesman could just pack his toothbrush and travel anywhere, those apprenticeship papers with "Swindon Trained" stamped across the top was all you needed alongside a British passport, opened a lot of doors for a young lad.

      @@sadelsor Coincidence here. I left after 3 years with my C & G Technician tickets and worked as a musician on Chandris Lines cruises (SS Ellinis etc). One guy I worked with eventually went to Australia on the £10 one way ticket and is still there. Sadly the unions had started destroying industry so I just did other things.
      One guy I knew who was at Swindon Apprentice School was older than me and he was brilliant at his job. He taught at the School for a few years and then went on to become an engineering lecturer in Yeovil.
