My husband and I were in gangs. He was shot 3 different times before the age of 19yrs old. I almost died at 18yrs old. We were both on meth. By the grace of God we are alive. I can’t believe the new life God has given me. I retired early, I babysit my grandson and I’m a Sunday school teacher. I love my life. Thank you Jesus ❤

Gen-X'er here as well. Growing up in a single-parent home on the streets of South Philly. I cringe at some of the stupidity I engaged in during my youth (climbing roofs, hopping trains, getting into fights, zipping in and out of traffic on a BMX way before helmets were commonplace, slacking in school, no impulse control etc). Things could have easily gone off the rails and I am fortunate to have lived long enough to have turned it around. Getting that low-level data entry job at the Philadelphia Stock Exchange after (barely) graduating from HS changed the entire course of my life for the better. Climbing the ladder in the finance industry through a series of "dues-paying" jobs was the best education I could have ever received. A lot of 'tough love' from mentors in the business and a lot of "eating crap" on the way up. Well worth it for what they taught me. I am eternally grateful and now try to be a similar mentor for my nephews, but they are much more mature than I was at the same age so they will be fine.

A Gen-X woman here that knows God protected me from death or worse growing up in the Bronx in the 70s and 80s. My single mother had learning disabilities; my father didn’t care if we were alive or dead, we moved in with my grandmother who was too old and resented me being a product of divorce that she had to deal with in her old age. I grew up like an uncivilized hellion. I turned my life in a better direction and try to teach my kids to live their life always doing the best they can to strive for improvement but always doing what is morally right. I was not guided properly growing up but I managed to get there in my 30s. I feel it in my bones that God was the one protecting me and guiding me when my parents did not.

Josh - enjoyed listening to your story - you still managed to turn out ok. Even if we don't always see eye to eye on everything, I believe we share enough similar attitudes that keep me interested. I'm a GenX'er who grew up in a single parent household - my mom was widowed just a few weeks shy of my 7th birthday. My motivation in life was to not end up of like my father. I'm not perfect, but I'm the most successful person in my family, including all of my Pennsylvania relatives. I was an angry teen, but grew out of it and made smart decisions regarding my life, who I married, finances, and my career. To put it bluntly, I'm a choir boy compared to how I could've turned out.

As a fellow member of Generation X, I'd say we are all lucky to be alive.

My twin daughters lived in an apartment in Portland, Me when they were students at UNE. My late mother was born and raised in Millinocket. I’m a baby boomer. I feel fortunate as well to have made it this far.

I was just on Commercial Street in Portland, visiting my son who is a social worker in that area.... I think I saw some graffiti on the side of an old building in the old port that said 'Your Ol Buddy Josh' Southern Maine is a beautiful part of the country. We may retire up there but it seems to be more expensive than CT right now.

I felt older than I was ! Never came home and used to steal weed from my father. I think everyone is bullied at some point. Unless you’re blessed to be 6 ft. In 7th grade. Now I live in a retirement community and worry about my taxes.

Josh, I love your candidness and sharp insights. But buddy, please be careful about how much you share on the Internet as to what you did 30+ years ago, because it could harm you if you decide to run for the U.S. Senate or Presidency (or local Sheriff) 15 years from now!

BTW Bad things don't happen to good people because there are no good people. There is no one good but God according to Jesus. There is none that are good. No not one. If we think we are good people it is our self-righteousness speaking where we have put ourselves on God's thrown. This violates at least the 1st Commandment if not also the 2nd Commandment.
