I loved the Cardinals, Cowboys, Washington rivalry from 1974-77. Almost every game involving two of the three teams was a classic. St. Louis made a horrible mistake when they parted ways with Don Coryell..
Anyone know why Monte Clark did not remain coach in San Francisco after bringing this team back with an 8-6 record in 1976? Just seemed like had he stayed, they would have taken up where they left off in '72 and really given the Rams a run for the money in the NFC West Division. Cardinals had good defensive players. They usually did. Brought in defensive end, John Zook (#63), from the Falcons that year, yet they couldn't get it done at a lot of crucial moments.
Monte Clark, in addition to being head coach, was in charge of player personnel decisions. He made the trade for Jim Plunkett, among other things. After the season, in early 1977, the 49ers were sold to Eddie DeBartolo Jr. Unfortunately, DeBartolo hired Joe Thomas as General Manager. Clark didn't want to give up player personnel decisions and was fired by Thomas. Joe Thomas was an insane megalomaniac. He made the awful trade for O.J. Simpson and turned the 49ers into the worst team in football. DeBartolo fired Joe Thomas in early 1979, and out of the ashes came Bill Walsh.
The 49ers WERE good in 1976. Started the season 6-1, but starting here, they'd lose four straight games, knocking them out of playoff contention. Their best year since 1972 and their last winning record until Bill Walsh became coach. Monte Clark only coached one season for San Francisco.
Early 70s they were good. The Rams however would take over that division big time for the rest of the decade. The Cardinals certainly had the offense but could never overcome a much more complete Dallas team in that NFC East. The 70s were great for football.
If Don Coryell only knew how many times his Chargers would (in the not too distant future) lose to the Plunkett-led Raiders *despite* scoring 24 or more points.
You forget how potent the Cardinals offense was in the 70s. Jim Hart could play with anybody. You throw in Terry Metcalf, Mel Gray, Jim Otis. Jackie Smith and a very good o-line. Shame they could never get the defense straightened out and then they let go of Coryell.
Monte Clark made the decision to wear white the entire year. He came from Don Shula's staff where the Dolphins predominantly wore white during the season. The year before in 1975, Miami wore white the entire year with the exception of two MNF games
@@michaelleroy9281 Nowadays even the GM doesn't make that choice because teams have marketing and advertising to have fans buy more paraphernalia. I had a conversation on another vine about how dominant the 49ers were on the road and how they went 1-9 at home in between winning their first 2 super bowls in 81 and 84. Maybe San Francisco should wear white at home

I was 13 in 1976 and fully engaged in the NFL. Such a great era for football. Years later, I could watch these all day.
Same age. I couldn't wait till Saturday to find out who was the game of the week!!!
G V Cal me 2 - these videos are quite nostalgic.
I envy you
David Lucas Machado thanks 😀
@@primateproductions126 what are the main things that are so much different now then they were back then ? Besides the internet and cell phones lol
I was at this game on Halloween 1976, yes it was a great game!
Great matchup: SF d-line at peak versus StL o-line at peak.
Thanks for sharing! Great game!
The pre Montana 49ers with Jim Plunkett,

The Monday Night game against the Vikings was memorable in that Delvin Williams and Wilbur Jackson both rushed for over 100 yards
Cleveland Elam, interesting 1st name :)
Loved the old NFL highlight music.

11:41 F-Post! Coryell started burning defenses with this play 55 years ago and NFL teams are STILL using it today!
Love it !! New subscriber here
Had a Jim Hart poster as a kid

NFL Films and Harry Kalas at their best.
HOW do you misplay that opening kickoff?

It's amazing what a bad kicking game can do for you. It cost the 49ers the game.
10:50 - The Cardinals should have given the game ball to 49er placekicker, Steve Mike-Mayer.
JV cain had potential. its a shame what happened to him.
NINERS wore white jerseys at home in 76 (all 14 games) what was the occasion Bicentennial?

@Howard Cosell It was a good thing he was fired otherwise the Niners could have been wearing white at home to this day
