Experimental is about right! I set up an entire shop system before I discovered the Strife dialogue system already had one...
Some of these bits clearly aren't intuitive - I have different line actions for showing prices and buying stuff, and one is a walkover line while the other is a use line, but that does mean you can sidestep past the walkover lines.
The bit with the lost souls near the start will spawn new ammo clips in that alcove whenever you dip below 20 rounds left.
The sentry will tell you about the skull keys, but only if you haven't picked them up yet.

The idea is not entirely new, I forgot the name but there's the wave-based mod where you have a hub to buy weapons/armor etc with the points you collect. This is a more polished execution, IMO, it being one map. The progress becomes significantly easier if you find the SSG (I didn't in my first run); not only so you can three-shot Knights but also the vertical spread to trigger the secret in the Red Castle area, if free look isn't allowed.

About half way through this video I downloaded the WAD and gave it a try! It's pretty fun and not too hard to get into the swing of things.

There's a lot of potential in story-based Doom WADs, given the community developing it a little more.
