I love the way the pinkies came together to catch the single rocket at the end (6:49) It's almost like they died from a head-on turbo collision with each other XD
This level taught me to like urban environments in first-person shooters... even if it is below the quality of the city maps we see in Duke 3D or Blood. It gives me a genuine "Hell on Earth" kind of feel. I've seen some screenshots from an earlier version of this map and it seemed to have a harbor of sorts, with water and three pier-like areas. The only remnant of this nowadays are the three "dead-end streets" in the northern end of the map. BTW, it's really considerate of Decino to make sure Arachnotrons get enough of their beauty sleep ;)
There's an interview with Bobby Prince where he describes earlier versions of this level being a lot larger and more detailed (and looking a lot more like a city), and how he actually composed "Into Sandy's City" for this level, and not MAP09.
@@hfc2x This makes sense. I suppose they had to cut it down due to the hardware limitations of the time. MS-DOS's memory management could be so frustrating at times.
This and Map12 were some of the few levels in Doom II that gave me an actual feel of fighting on a earth overtaken demons and the forces of hell. They are both still abstract in many ways because of the unique aspects of the doom engine not being able to have a second level without some tricks. But while you are sprinting across the streets being sniped by imps from the windows it feels more grounded.
I'll never forget how surprised I was the first time I played this map with multi-player tags turned on and realised there's a Cyberdemon walking around this level in co-op mode!
I remember the amount of time this map used to take me on UV, maybe like from 20 to 30 minutes? Congratulations on 6:48 on NM! P. S. Paying my traditional homage to the arrow as well :)
honestly, i haven't ever watched your gameplay videos, but after deciding to watch one a week ago i actually really enjoy them! wish more people watched them
This is where Doom II *really* gets difficult. I mean gets into the city levels. All in all even if most of the buildings didn't have any kind of realistic insides this map not only gave every player an official taste of urban demon combat, but also inspired many map makers that thought "I can do better". Now that I think about it jumping from skyscraper to skyscraper and only sticking around for one floor of it is how Doom Eternal's Final Sin level plays as well! ... tbh I'm just really happy that Doom Eternal managed to give justice to the Hell on Earth idea with modern 3D artwork and design.
That was a good route. I also didn't consider how useful being silent would be in the early stages. I think I was more worried about this map than you were. Haha
I have always loved this map just for trying to run around like a madman getting everything to infight without ever shooting a shot. Of course, that's always on UV, whereas you make Nightmare look like a cakewalk.
watching this series at total random, as an old fart that played all the classic doom games back in 93 on an antique PC for hours and hours, its amazing to see secrets I never ever knew existed :D Great series!
There's nothing more comforting after a long day at work than cracking a cold one and hearing "Greetings, everyone!", followed by 20 minutes of calculated alien zombie slaughter. ❤
Decino, I started playing Doom 2 no-saves, pistol start UV 100% + items the day you started your doom 2 nightmare run. Even though it's my childhood game, I am a total noob. I barely finish UV in the "normal way." The first maps were pretty straightforward, so I eventually reached this one before you, and after my, I don't know, 20th attempt, watching and re-watching your old UV classic doom 2 run; I kept wondering how you would even do Downtown on Nightmare. And damn, there it is. What a clean run. I would NEVER think about not firing once to not alert the little spideys and get the supercharge. Amazing!
I’ve been wrong about the maps that would be challenging so far. Thinking industrial zone will be given you have to get all items but I’m sure you’ll pwn it. Loving your series so far, mate!
Decino, i just wanted to tell you that your videos are incredible. I have decided to take on doom 2 on nightmare with you, however i'm still stuck on map 9 😅. The execution of this level was masterful, reminds me of playing DOOM II on nightmare back in the day before my newer, more recent runs. The RNG is relentless sometimes though
Very nicely done! Even when practiced with deaths, you make these look eeeeeasy, it's easy to forget that a single slipup can mean a painful death. When I was doing this, that jump to the Revenant ledge was the killer of many a run. Some days they just feel really intent on blocking you. With co-op monsters on, there's even a Cyberdemon roaming around that ledge too to splash you off or block you sometimes. Usually it's Romero tossing in Cybers everywhere in co-op, not Sandy....
I remember that getting into this level as a kid was a real achievement (I wasn't pretty good at the time and some sections felt overwhelming) i had an Xbox at the time with Doom 3 ROE, good times
I expected this to be worse, because I remember the city levels as having lots of weak hitscanners located on high platforms in areas you are constantly revisiting. Thus making it rather pointless to kill them, while they still keep chipping away at your health all the damn time. But this one has surprisingly little of that, just arachnotrons that fire streams of plasma. I'm sure that's about to change.
The scattering of items can be a bit of a challenge but having two invulnerability spheres does give you a boost. I don't blame you for skipping certain areas, Nightmare's all about efficiency.
You know, one thing you don't get in modern games is the demand for imagination due to the gameplay and art design limitations. There is something whimsical about being able to convince yourself that this map takes place in an actual city. The suspension of disbelief is comforting in a nostalgic way.
Still love this map, but yeah it does seem hard but time yourself right and then your good to go with Invun's. Nightmare Mode is a pain sometimes. Regardless, it's still a very cool map to see and this music fits it well. Good job out there. 🙂👍
you know what always pissed me off about doom 2 maps? and why i've never completed pistol starting the entire game? the fact that more than a few have no super shotgun pickups, in a game very much designed around that weapon.

He did it again fellas, map 14 is next and we're one step closer to find out how our hero will do map 15. Or at least I am since he still needs to go for the secret exit there
A lot of people seem to hate this map but honestly, on my first playthrough it wasn't that bad? It was a bit hard to realize what to do next after killing all demons, but there are way more obtuse maps than this, and the combat is fun.
Civvie mocked the map for being too convoluted and sandy needing arrows to point it out, to an extent I agree, but I like having a lot of places to go and a lot of things to explore.
I like this map, the scenery must have been top notch for 1994 (I wasn’t alive yet) and I still think it looks rather good today. Also last I checked there aren’t any pain elementals on this map 2:38.
I'm playing through DOOM II on UV 100% Kills and Secrets Pistol-start for the first time now, taking my time to learn and enjoy the maps. This map sucked so much, it's terrible. And also, I've only found the megaarmor secret after all kills, having to go through the whole map with almost no armor, so that was a lot of fun Great video, decino!

I ran it the other day in UV. In the end I had to look up a guide on all the secrets; I couldn't remember the mega armour for example.
Many people hate this level but I liked it a lot back in the day. I appreciated a lot the open areas in Doom 2 that Doom 1 lacked at.
