Fish on the wall is hilarious because your Sim will literally cry and get a sad moodlet seeing it
Only if they have the child of the ocean trait! Mermaids without that trait don't care.

Yeah, I was doing a rags to riches challenge starting with a mermaid, and I sent her to fish 🙈. She became very sad, and I felt bad, so we stopped fishing and searched for collectibles instead.
Really?! 😂 that’s kinda an amazing detail for them to add, but also so sad 😅 (hey that rhymed!)
I hate that mermaids are uncomfortable with fishing/fish on the wall. I get that they feel connected to other ocean life and whatever, but seriously, if mermaids existed, their diet would 100% consist of fish unless they were vegetarian which would be super unlikely

Only because she has the child of the ocean trait! A mermaid without that trait doesn't care.
The Expanded Mermaid mod adds a lot of fun to the fairly simplistic base game mermaid gameplay. I know you don't really do much modded playthrough, but if you want to focus in on mermaid, it might add some enjoyment. Especially for a 'somewhat evil' mermaid, who you can turn into a Sea Witch and make fiendish pacts with unsuspecting rubes. :)
Also fun: Be a Child of the islands so you can summon the elementals, and have a kid with Sulani Mana. Then you have a mermaid who can summon meteors! Good fun can be had.

Maybe Coral has fish on her walls to both convince visitors that she's definitely not a mermaid and remind herself of the enemies she's bested at sea--like those fish are fish that pissed her off and now they're hanging on her wall. lol

Typically rebuilding Sulani is my first stop too, especially for my mermaid Sims. A swim up back deck is my dream for them. Lots of natural features to make them feel at home.

im so glad your on the mermaid train; they are by far my faviorate occoult!!!! not very disruptive durring gameplay; but with a bunch of cool perks if you live in sulani (sleeping in the ocean builds fun and sleep needs; and fitness getting in and out of the water)

Also, lots of fish eat other fish. In fact almost NO sea creatures are exclusive herbavores, even tiny creatures other living things.
And it's not at all weird for most mermaids! Sadly, just anyone, mermaid or not, that has the Child of the Ocean trait in the Sims.

I wish Simsie would play with the Mermaid Mod and show what you can do with it. I have that Mod but still have not figure out what i can or should do. I had it a while ago and remember Selkies and stuff. But now i have no clue how to get a Selkie anymore.
Such timing! Just last week I redid this same lot for my first time playing with mermaids! Next time I try it, I'll definitely use this starter instead! (The only trouble is your mermaid is a Child of the Ocean? She will cry and be sad when she sees the mounted fish, lol.)

i was trying to build a massive sulani mansion yesterday and matching the woods was so hard. island living is one of my favourite packs but it is so hard to match the wood tones!! i struggle with it every time i build with that pack.

I think that an unlimited budget build would be good in Sulani because the items are so expensive. It's like Realm of Magic--a budget build just isn't very fun since you can't afford all the cool new items. I was hoping this would look even more mermaid-y but it's hard with limited funds...
