- Emotions ran high in a debate over parental rights versus the privacy and safety of LGBTQ+ students. It played out Thursday night at the Chino Valley Unified School District board meeting in Southern California's San Bernardino County, part of a broader conversation happening throughout the state.
California's Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond spoke during the public section of the meeting, telling ABC10 in an interview the next day that students in that district invited him to come weigh in.

Y'all miss the point. Maybe you both would be loving accepting helpful parents (or maybe you're controlling one's who think you Own your kids, I don't know) if your kids came to you with something hard to accept, but some kids would be met with violence and harm because of their parents bigotry and ignorance of genetic realities.
That is a false argument. The question is whether a teacher has the obligation to report to a parent about their child’s social life. One would hope a child truly trusted their parents, but that is not always true and it is not the business or burden of the teacher to notify parents about who their child is dating or speaking to or even what they are calling themselves. Of course, most people would not condone a teacher sending home emails with information about a child’s straight relationships or identity. “ Dear Mr and Mrs Smith, I thought you should know your thirteen year old boy was holding hands with a girl. Please take the appropriate action and send them to counseling.” Or, is straight behavior allowed and gay behavior not allowed? That is what this comes down to in my eyes.

Newsflash, there a LOT of students that confide in their teachers. Trust me, we know more than what we WANT to know. We are professionals…we deal with things accordingly. If a student confided in me about being gay, I’m not outing them to anybody. That’s not my place. Its not my job to fix relationships between students and parents.

FYI, currently it's state law that public schools CAN"T tell parents if this is happening unless the student says it's ok! That's why Thurmond said it may be unlawful. I don't agree at all but it's the law currently.

To be clear: There is not nor has there ever been a policy that forbids schools from notifying parents (or official protective services). All that board is doing is removing two things. 1) Any hope that child has of getting support or help from the adults in their school; and 2) Any dedicated educators and administrators hope of being able to foster trust and exercise any autonomy and judgment. Shoot. I just saw the problem. We should also NOT let teachers be parents! Who knows what they let their own children do?!?

It is easily provable that LGB people exist, because there are L and G couples. I would think the parents would know that was happening before the schools. Cause who's paying for the medications and possible surgeries.....the parents I would assume. If a child has reason to believe their parent may beat them or try to forcefuly "convert" them so that they share their worldview, there should be no obligations towards that "parent" in ANY capacity. Same should go for kids that renounce their parent's heathen Gods in favor of another or none at all. You have no more a say in what someone else is than what you do over what they believe. This applies regardless of what kind of relationship you have to that person, you simply get no say in trying to CHANGE the mind of another human being.
Children do not have "reason". It's why we don't let them make adult decisions. Parents have all rights regarding their children. Period.

Children transitioning and children being beaten by their parents are two different topics, and should be treated as such. Parents need to know that someone is going to cut open their child for any reason. If the parents are abusing their child for any reason, then report it to CPS. You can't bundle the two distinct topics and make one law because not all parents are or will be abusive. "Has reason to believe" is not evidence of abuse. Who's talking about changing kids' minds?

Is this about teen only or is there a lot of young kids who tranisition without their parents knowledge? Seems like it would be kind of hard for a 6 year old to get surgeries and aquire the proper hormones to transition to a different gender. Would also think it would be to complicated comprehending the endocrine system when they haven't even been taught about it at school yet.
