That 5th inning broke me as a Yankee fan. I never seen so many little league mistakes in a single inning and yet it emphasizes how poorly this team treats fundamental baseball things like basic fielding and base running. This is an annual occurrence that Cashman's excel formulas don't account for whatsoever.
This morning as I was mulling over this I was saying to myself.. I will take nine Dustin Pedroia's in the field every time over what we put out there every day..sound solid fundamental player in every aspect of the game he was.. the epitome of what a baseball player should be...
Judge dropping fly ball was not fundamental mistake. He just dropped the ball for his first error of the entire year, bad timing. Volpe makes the correct decision to try and get the runner at third, makes bad throw. Once again, not a fundamental error. The only fundamental error was Cole not running to cover the bag and making attempt to beat Betts to 1rst base.
The Yankees fell like a bully who got punched in the face for the first time, they panicked after that, that's why the Skipper calls, the apparent lack of fundamentals and the instant bad decisions. For crying out loud don't go bragging about game 4 batting against an alternative bull pen or dominating a clearly diminished Ohtani.

GTFOH Rich, OF COURSE you should point the finger at Judge!!! The easy pop fly he missed in the fifth inning with two outs and his catch being the third led to FIVE runs! That one missed catch led to FIVE effing runs....
No, the missed play at first caused the five runs! The score was 5-1 at the time with two out. I don’t know what Cole was thinking after a brilliant performance.
If I’m remembering correctly, Judge’s error was with no outs, then Cole struck out the next two which would have ended then inning, but then it all spun out of control from there.
Why do you say a let down. Yankees have always been the team to beat. For generations it’s always been the Yankees. As a bleed blue Dodger fan since 1965, it was 77 and 78 losses to the Yanks. Then 81 came and Fernando mania. 88 with Heirshiser. The infamous Gibby homer. Now in 24 they win in the Bronx again. Dodgers were better. They had numerous 2 out hits. The made little to no mistakes on defense. And the pitching with only 3 healthy starters. Dodgers won. The Yankees got beat!
I know being a baseball fan from Europe and lived in NY state when I was young (Reggie Jackson era), I can say that despite all the irritating comments from those who disrespect The Yankees and vice versa, Othani and Fred are super stars, accept that and respect it. Also Yankees Pitcher did a superb job ( If any of you have played ball and been a pitcher, you know how tough it is to see your team making errors). The game was great to watch and in the end of the day, it is played by humans who can make mistakes, collectively!!. That shows more how a good job the Yankees coach created such a team. Happy for Dodgers (Japanese friends are very happy) and sad for Yankees. But that IS great BASEBALL. Peace all!
🙋♂️50-yr Blue here: The fact Aaron Boonehead couldn’t detect NOBODY in that lineup wanted to see Tim Hill ever again is just another testament to how subpar he is at reading games in real time. I rejoiced every TIME they sent out anyone BUT Hill last night. Thanks, “Boonie”! 👋 🥴
For a second I thought I'd changed the channel and was watching a little league game. It's like the Yankees forgot how to play baseball in that inning.
The reality being that good pitching, good defense, timely situational hitting, good base running, mixed in with occasional power win in the post-season. That has been the story since the inception of the game and it will not change. They Yankee organization appears to disregard the importance of defense and sound fundamental baseball, advancing runners, driving in runners from scoring position with singles, doubles, putting bat on ball and the ball in play, bunting, while prioritizing walks over base hits, and home runs over all else, the swing for the fences in every at bat, striking out 26% - 40% of your at bats is acceptable, even if you are a singles hitter. The unfortunate consequence of that approach being many loses in close games, because you can not string base-hits together to sustain a rally, can rarely score if someone does not hit a home-run, you give good hitting teams extra at bats and opportunities to score when you fail to make plays in the field, run yourself out of scoring opportunities and kill rallies. The World Series showed you everything that was wrong with the NY Yankees and their roster. Cashman constructed a roster without a single productive bat on the bench, no one who could be used and counted on to pinch hit, no bonafide closer, no center-fielder, no 3rd baseman. All of the starting pitchers are prone to surrender home-runs, often in bunches and they often struggle when facing the better hitting teams. Stanton is guaranteed to miss at least 6-8 weeks every season with injury, that is a given, yet Cashman had no contingency plan in place for when Stanton went down, no one on the roster who could step in and prevent the wheels from falling off. Dominguez was recovering from UCL repair surgery and should never have been the fall-back guy. He is unproven at the major league level, his defense is suspect, and guys recovering from surgery often suffer setbacks. Any and everyone but Cashman, knew that Holmes was not a closer. The guy does not have a strike-out pitch, pitches to contact, and leaves too many sinkers up in the strike-zone to be hit and often crushed. Balls put in play have a way of beating you, and Holmes proved that blown save after blown save. Weaver did eventually perform decent as a closer, but I am not convinced he is the answer. The MO of the Yankee offense when facing decent pitching the entire season was get shut-down for 7-8 innings, having perhaps 1-2 hits over that span, and hope to score against a closer. They have a roster that feast on mediocre and worse pitching and who are routinely over-matched and dominated by top their pitchers.
Yankees' great offense during the regular season hid all the mistakes and silly defensive errors. But in the playoffs little mistakes become big things when pressure is on. Dodgers made mistakes too but looked more fundamentally sound.
Dodgers were just more fundamentally sound and had more hustle. They never took anything for granted and hustled even if it looked like a sure out. They never assumed anything and made sure to do all the little things right. The yankees are talented but unfocused and undisciplined. They take too much for granted, look past some of the little things, and the Dodgers made them pay for it every time.
Yankees beat bunch of bullpen bench pitchers in game 4. Dodgers basically gave the game 4 to the Yankees to rest their starting pitchers. Would have faced aces Yamamoto and Buehler in games 6/7.
The New York Yankees' loss is one of the biggest collapses in a championship game, as is the case with the Atlanta Falcons' loss to the New England Patriots. Go Dodgers!!!
I was for the Yankees in the World Series until a couple of people changed my mind. Their names; Austin Capobianco and John Peter. After that, I switched to the Dodgers.
Blame it to the Dodgers , they never gave up they were always looking for that hit on every pitch even when they were 5-0 in the game!!!!! #34 is probably very proud for what these team has accomplished.

All I wanted was a competitive World Series. I don’t think I’m alone. We hadn’t seen so much talent on one field in a long time. For it to go the way it did, everyone lost but the Dodgers.
The Rizzo ball was travelling quick and spinning - it's a case of a lack of time - to either charge it or for Cole to get to the base. It was a tough play - much tougher than the Judge catch and the Volpe throw.
Come on guys, be real. The Dodgers were the better team coming in and they left being the better team. Championships are won with timely hitting and great defense. The Dodgers had the horses to do both and should have completed a sweep. At least by taking one out of a superior team the Yankees can say “mission accomplished.” The only thing that actually made my day last night was celebrating at the Bronx. Maybe we’ll get to do it again next season.
Rich, I’m devastated after last night. Been waiting 15 years for my team to return to the fall classic; to watch them implode in the 5th inning the way they did will be something I’ll never be able to forget. Who’s to blame? Aaron Boone - he’s made way too many bad decisions this series. And it’s been clear all season that the Yankees lack the fundamentals. It’s on him to instill a better work ethic in his players.
90% Cole’s fault, 10% Rizzo’s. Cole didn’t for a nanosecond think about covering 1st
Well, Rich, I am a huge Michigan fan and huge Dodgers fan. I end up winning the best of both worlds. Go Blue! ][V][ Go Dodgers!
All Yankees fans deserve this! Wosrt fanbase in sports. The sense of entitlement is out of control. Your pain brings me joy. As a Royals fan, it's awesome to know that we have won a World Series more recently than the Yankees. 3 times the payroll for zero titles in 15 years. You treat Aaron Boone like crap and he deserves better than your toxic fanbase.
The reason they don’t win more often is bc of Boone, this just shows you don’t watch all of the Yankee games like we do as fans.
@thesoulsurvivor yea, Boone caused Aaron Judge to strike out every at bat. He caused Judge to drop that ball last night....
@ if he picked the right pitcher to close game 1, they wouldn’t be in this spot in the first place. Who tf picks a pitcher who has not pitched in 6 weeks over Tim Hill? Who guess what? Pitches great the next game
No one cares about the Royals or their fans 😂
I gots to respectfully disagree..... methinks the dallas cowpokes are more ridiculous.
Nice Beverly Hills Cop reference Describing Freddie Freeman “ Is this the man? Is this the man who wrecked the buffet at Chavez Ravine this evening?”
It was remarkable! I'm a Dodgers fan, so I loved it! The Dodgers are too good to lose to a team who made that many errors. The Yankees gave that game away. They, the Yankees, would have lost the series anyway because the Dodgers are just that good! ❤
As a west coast Dodgers kid who now lives in New England, I was feasting this week. I have nothing against the Yankees or Red Sox, but their fans, the fans around me make it almost impossible to NOT root against them. All I have heard for almost 30 years is "Yankees buy baseball," "Red Sux spend just as much and can't win" yadda yadda. Obviously a lot has happened since 1995, but the griping, whining, attitude, and arrogance has yet to wane. I'm just going to respond with 'Freddie Freeman' going forward. Now if the Raiders could just win a Super Bowl 🤞
Rich 🤣simultaneously being a Jets fan and a Yankee fan this year is ROUGH
When Mookie reached first base I knew deep in my soul we were winning this game! 2024 Champs! 💙⚾️
You probably started rooting for them during the pandemic
@ 😂 I’ve got my Kershaw Cy Young jersey, I was born in the Mike piazza era, and was one of the few in blue living in SF during the giants 10/12/14 Dynasty. Unwavering and now celebrating! 🎉💙
No Rich, you cannot.
When the Yankees lose, in the playoffs in particular, it is a good day in baseball.
Been waiting for this all day!
Dodgers was by far and wide the better team in the series, and faced better competition in the postseason. World Series was the easy part.
Peace all!
I don't care what team it is, you just can't reward sloppy and lazy play.
Boone sucks for sure. He can't hold a candle to Rogers
When the Yankees lose, baseball wins.
Lame
America wins
Except when they're west coast doppelganger wins
The only letdown was Freddie Freeman not stretching his record for HR's in consecutive World Series games to 7.
Almost
No need to worry - he’ll extend it in the 2025 World Series
Glad for the Dodgers and Ohtani FINALLY getting his World Series Ring. That injury was Scary.
Truly feel bad for the Yankees and for Aaron Judge.
I'm an Angels fan first. But I was super happy for Ohtani! He totally earned and deserved that ring!
As a KC Royals fan, I couldn’t be happier!
0:30 As a Michigan alum and lifelong Dodgers fan, I got to see my Wolverines and Dodgers both win titles in the same calendar year. Feels damn good. 😁
LMAO! The Goodfellas reference! "I thought you said I had it Spider!"
The most shocking part of this miscue meltdown of a fifth inning was that Gleybor had none of them
For a second I thought I'd changed the channel and was watching a little league game.
Rich, I don't need 14 minutes to tell you this, THE BETTER TEAM WON !!!!
Yankees' great offense during the regular season hid all the mistakes and silly defensive errors. But in the playoffs little mistakes become big things when pressure is on. Dodgers made mistakes too but looked more fundamentally sound.
Every Yankees player(present/future) must watch this video again and again, keep it in mind.
“I thought you had it Spider” 😂😂😂😂
They also added 20+ pitches on Cole's arm in the 5th.
Blame it to the Dodgers , they never gave up they were always looking for that hit on every pitch even when they were 5-0 in the game!!!!! #34 is probably very proud for what these team has accomplished.
Might have been the worst WS mistakes ever. All in the same ININING!!??
My family’s been on a trip to Ireland for the past two weeks. My brother-in-law’s been getting up at midnight to watch the World Series games, watching his team crush his dreams, have his hopes sore at last minute and climbing ever hired… Only to have them dashed on the rocks below.
He’s said that one of the downsides of me getting more into sports is that my commentary is more pointed and harsh.
Cole miraculously gets Yanks out of that inning and somehow he's being blamed for Rizzo's lack of athleticism and skill in the field.
Dodgers make history Teoscar wins homerun derby Shohei goes 50/50 Freddie hits Ws homeruns one of those a grand slam. What a year!
The better team won. Get over it.
Juan Soto to the Dodgers. I want to see the entire baseball world lose their minds
how much do the dodgers need damn smh
And they'll still be treated like a Cinderella team compared to the Yankees. 😂
I can see this happening, but why? They just won a WS with a team that will return all those core players.
fo 600 no way, his batting is godlike the rest mediocre
@Iesse13 His batting is good.....he got exposed by Dodgers pitching......which was pretty darned good. Judge is the hitting god.....but didn't say his bedtime prayers every night so God got angry with him.
Im a Yankees fan, but Freeman is a BEAST! Why do pitchers throw meat to those who eat?! Study the damn lineup! Every hitter has weaknesses. Find them and exploit them. ❤ Go YANKEES!
That 5th innings gonna get talked about for decades, maybe even a whole century.
As a braves fan I was rooting for Freddie to show out but the Yankees to win I was only half right lol but man Freddie killed it this year wish we never let him go
It was the balk that got me. How do you make that mistake in a WS game? Yankees didn’t have a winner’s focus.
I really enjoyed watching the Dodgers celebrate on the yankees home field.
that 5th inning would go down in HISTORY of "What Not To Do in Baseball Games", not just WS but Baseball games
Hey Rich....Remember when the Mets SWEPT the Yanks this year? Good Times Good Times.
Oh and Rich.... Judge's HR is an Out in any other park in MLB
Lastly .... What the HELL is Brockman wearing ??? DOOOFUS
According to Statcast, Judge's home run would have been out of 29 parks - everywhere except San Francisco.
its Halloween, prob a costume idk what though
2:07 Garrett Cole is the best Pointer in the MLB.
LOL, I just heard this: They invited Aaron Judge to Times Square on New Year's Eve... To drop the ball. 🤭
Rich leaving the history making to us okay 👍
Sincerely, Red Sox Fans
where were the red sox at this year?
@basebyonny where we always have been as the team with the most WS victories in the last 20 years 🤷♂️
@basebyonny We ain't even 10 years out from the last red sox WS appearance lmfaoo this was the Yankees first in 15 years 😂 what is we talking about
To be fair. The Rams haven't always had it this good
All I wanted was a competitive World Series. I don’t think I’m alone. We hadn’t seen so much talent on one field in a long time. For it to go the way it did, everyone lost but the Dodgers.
The sorrowful vibe of Rich’s monologue and then the sudden cuts to TJ and Brockman in costume 🤣💀
We still remember your accusations for Ohtani. Waiting to talk to you at the parking lot.
judge's disgrace will be forever remembered as the yankees 'bill buckner moment'
Just say 555 and the yankees fans will understand it.
The red sox let me down sometimes, the Yankees never disappoint.
He tries to hard to be their pal instead of pushing them harder 🗽
