Beautiful sounding pedal. Does pretty much everything you could ask for. And your faces while discovering this...like a kid on Christmas morning always surprised and amazed when opening each present. 😃
Great video, Leon! I bought one of these in 2007, after a year of playing guitar. I formed a goth/post-punk band with my two only friends into that sort of thing, and I took a job delivering phone books just so I could save up this pedal. It was always a noisy thing, but the variety of tones was/is amazing. I still remember plugging it in, playing the riff to "A Forest" by the Cure and thinking 'This is it!'
I'd have to pull up the manual again but the Bass mode is tailored for bass guitars. The acoustic is a take on the AC2 acoustic simulator, great for cleans.
With any upgrade imo it's how one uses it that determines some of the effectiveness of upgrade in question. Some thought Chorus effects were useless until Nirvana made millions with them so... it's all in how the upgrade is used and applied imo. Good video 👍
I heard you mention the OD20 with it's sub-octave feature... The Danelectro 'Black Paisley' does that too as wel as the Hughes & Kettner 'Warp Factor' pedals :-)
Dude, you gave a very thoughtful review, like you always do on you reviews. A while back, you reviewed the Digitech Timebender Delay Pedal. You spent 27 minutes giving the most useful musical examples and explaining just about every function. I appreciated that review because I own that pedal and you were one of a very small handful out of 30 plus reviews (that sucked) that was not only informative, but entertaining.
The Boss 20 series is LEGENDARY , this one was pretty obscure , by the time actually noticed it or knew about it , it was already discontinued , but i bought one 3 or 4 years ago and it became my one of main chorus pedals.
Great vid Todd, how would you rate it against the Eventide Tricerachorus in Stereo image ?, meaning used for only stereo spread with the rate turned off and full depth ?
Depends on the algo you select on the CE. Tricerachorus also has stereo detune so you can disable the chorus entirely and just use the detune for width
Hello leon todd. how can i switch between 1234 memory using just the footswitch? It turns out when i press the right switch it just toggles Memory/Manual. thank you in advance
Found this used a week ago for a good price and I effin' love it so far. I haven't tried in the FX loop of my Dual Rectifier yet with moderate gain but the clean sounds are so damn good for early 90s alt rock riffs! I think the Rich Mode is my favorite so far.
For clean schmoe, I was originally thinking a 6.5 or 7 on the Huff Scale, but at about 11:15, I felt like it deserved another point, so I'm gonna go with 8/10 schmoes. I think for filthy schmoes it deserves an 8.5/10. It really does a good job, and I like the brilliance setting. Excellent review!
It makes very nice Lifeson noises. And I really like it for that. Looks like it was fun and interesting to play with, but I'm not sure I would invest in it.
I remember reading years ago that the ce-20 was based on the UAD Dimension D plug-in from the mid 90’s. If that is true then it explains why it sounds better (to my ears) than the COSM stuff from the same period. Great review as always.
I'd assumed the Dimension mode on the pedal is Roland's in house emulation of their own SDD-320. I think the COSM stuff was only the amp/cab/guitar modeling?
I forget who it was but I remember seeing a rig schematic of someone who used _two_ CE-20s for live shows, and apparently got a ton of compliments on their clean tone...
Just started watching and as soon as you started playing I thought it sounded excellent. Outstanding man. I love me some chori. 😂. ♥️🤘♥️ I used to say with a chorus always on with the rate and the depth just barely on and the effect rate really low. That and some delay and reverb is just awesome . ♥️🤘♥️ The dimension D mode is what interests me as well just hearing about this pedal. I would like to try the double overdrive pedal and see how it works out. Thank you again for such a great review of this pedal my down under friend. ♥️🤘♥️ This show is always good sir ! Appreciate it very much kind sir. ♥️🤘♥️
You are a legend! When i was editing this I realised i failed to mention the presets functionality which feels like the perfect amount for chorus. I wish the DD20 had a few more preset slots but 4 is real nice for dimension/ce-1/slow grease/fast wobble IMO
@@LeonTodd just use midi and / or external switches for 120 or so presets. Works great, awesome delay with a perfect layout. edit: wrong, was thinking of the dd200, sorry :)
Hey Man, ... Thankks for this review. I'm in the process of buying this pedal used, virtually new! and I'm getting it dirt cheap , which is good because I'm dirt poor :D
Thanks for the Lifeson chord 👍. Would it kill ya to play some Time Stand Still?... No More Tearrrrssss👍.. The Rag Doll stuff sounds MONSTROUS 👏😎 16:03 for the part when the ladies throw the bras on the stage. I think today's Boss MD 200 will do all that with other modulation types
Do you or did you own any of the BOSS twin pedal series? Which ones?
DD20 and OD20 my dude
@@redcomn DD20 😍
Dd20 and Ce20
DD 20 is in the hall of fame!
I have the CE 20 also, prob gonna break it out tonight
I'm watching this with my son (almost 5) and he says... "Is that your friend?"
I guess all guitarists are friends by our mutual gear nerdiness.
We like chorus. We're all friends :)
Honestly incredible pedal, so many amazing variations.
I was pleasantly surprised!

Yeah this would be perfect for that riff!
I love that strat man! Sooooo killer!!
I used the CE-20 for years before eventually replacing it with a Jam Ripply Fall. It was and still is a great sounding chorus pedal.
I see Leon, I see chorus, I click.
9:16 - 9:25 yummy!
It goes alright hey!

Is this surface mount or through the hole?
What do you use for distortion on this video? Sounds great!!

AFAIK the COSM tech was, as you say, only used for amp/cab+speaker/mic placement modeling.
I forget who it was but I remember seeing a rig schematic of someone who used _two_ CE-20s for live shows, and apparently got a ton of compliments on their clean tone...

I have this chorus from Boss but not sure how it measures up with other brands 🙏
BOSS Chorus is always great :)
sir how do you set the right footswitch into cycle memory 1234? I bought this pedal but I dont know how to use it on live.
Hope you enjoy it! Its former place in the drawer is now available for stuff I need to find a home for....
IIRC, it lets you store four presets and step through them with the one stomp switch....
BTW, I found it about 13 years ago in the bargain pedals display at Rainbow Guitars in Tucson, AZ....

Presence knob! * gets pelted by children’s birthday gifts thrown from off screen *
5:00 This sound reminds me of that Tom Scholz(Boston) Rockman sound. Def Leppard used it all over the Hysteria album
Big time - the Rockman chorus is wonderful and warm!

Is there such a thing as a garbage boss pedal?
Yes there is. The boss ds1 sucks ass
