  • SUPERB FOOTAGE - PLEASE WATCH TO THE END !
Excellent scenes of narrow gauge action at the Cuban sugar mill, Mal Tiempo. Several US built oil fired 2-8-0 tender locomotives are seen bringing cut sugar cane into the mill. In the setting sunlight the oil burners cast a vivid light beneath the locomotives. Filmed in 1998.

Excelente vídeo! As locomotivas da época mais remota, ainda são operantes por lá! Que país maravilhoso! Puro encanto!

Infelizmente, isso foi há 23 anos e o vapor não opera mais esses trens de carga ......
Sadly, this is now 23 years ago and the steam no longer operates these freight trains ..... Andy

With the low-slung burners and a thrashed loco on a heavy train it was possible to feel the train through your feet before you heard it. The locos may have been small but they were worked really hard. Great times in Cuba, thanks for sharing

A low-frequency rumble/drone. Some videos do capture it when the train is a long way off.

Thank you. It certainly was a great steam show. They still have a few locos available to charter but the days shown here are well gone now.

It is strange that there is evidence of the locomotives being fitted for burning bagasse.
In the Phillipines the practice was to burn oil at the start of the milling campaign & revert to bagasse when they had enough stockpiled at the mill. Bagasse is an ineffecient fuel.
The length of a trip to fetch cane might simply have been beyond the storage capacity of both tenders if burning bagasse.

It certainly was awesome. I feel really sorry for you US enthusiasts who either couldn't or wouldn't go there for ridiculous political reasons. The place was a paradise of ancient US built cars, trucks and steam locos ... and only 15 years ago.

I don't know whether they had such a thing as a 'boiler certificate' under Cuban law, but certainly one locomotive in Cuba exploded at CAI Augusto Cesar Sandino (#1382).
The failure seems to have occurred in the section of boiler barrel nearest the front tubeplate. The rupture totally blew away the front segment of the boiler barrel & the release of energy blew the rest of the boiler backwards. The steam dome is actually bent backwards. There seems to be some confusion over the date of the incident.

Interesting! I suspect there was minimal control over the standard of maintenance.

The first sequence is a textbook run, relatively clean exhaust & less waste of fuel.
The last run taken at dusk: Did you have to bribe the crew of the locomotive for the fire & smoke?
Just wondering if they felt such a display looked unprofessional.

What is the sparking/fire under the driver/tender wheels? Is there a hole in its firebox?

    • @AndyDandanFisherSteam
      @AndyDandanFisherSteam  6 лет назад +1

All the Cuban locos (sadly now long gone) didn't have fireboxes, as we know them. They were oil burners and the flames we can see are from the burners underneath where a normal firebox would be. I suspect the flames are rather more obvious on these little locos than they should be because they've been "DIY" converted from coal or wood burning by local engineers who've done a bit of a makeshift job of it !

The last steam locomotive I saw in use was many years ago on a level crossing on the autopiste, (that's right, across the autopiste) line now gone. I have heard but have had no personal experience that steam specials are run to Caibarien. You might wish to check it out, good luck, Keith Parker.
