    Ecuador is a nice place to go. Most of my family is Ecuadorian. The last time I visited Ecuador was in 2010 and I don’t remember much and I don’t think I’ve ever see its rail system either until now. I’m very surprised that most of the railroad crossings don’t work and they all have WCH Electronic Bells which is neat.

    My hat's off to the track maintenance crews, the railroad is in phenomenal shape!

    • @KochersbergTV
      @KochersbergTV  5 лет назад +2

      Yes and they certainly deserve our admiration: the weather can be incredibly rainy and landslides, sometimes very impressive, are quite frequent.

    • @RustyOldF250
      @RustyOldF250 5 лет назад +4

      @@KochersbergTV I remember hearing about the landslides, glad they got them repaired. It's funny, I've been a train fan my whole life, but i recently (a year ago) took a job as track maintenance on a shortline here in the USA, and now whenever I watch video's like these I find myself looking at the track as much as the trains!

    • @KochersbergTV
      @KochersbergTV  5 лет назад +3

      In terms of landslides, one of the problems they are facing is the soil in the upper part of the line. Th line is established closed to two big volcanoes, one of which is still active. Those covered the area with thick layers of ash, which is easily washed away during the rainy season. El Niño is particularly dangerous in this respect.

    • @RustyOldF250
      @RustyOldF250 5 лет назад +3

      @@KochersbergTV That makes sense, wet volcanic ash behaves a lot like chocolate pudding! We're actually dealing with a similar problem on one of our RR's, it's built in a valley that was filled in by volcanic activity however many thousands of years ago, but on one section a deep ditch parallels the railroad. Local development is causing much more water to flow into the ditch than used to, and our railroad is trying to slip into the ditch. one spot in particular just keeps taking more and more rock, with no end in sight. We get the track leveled up nicely, then a couple weeks later the rail next to the ditch has sunk back down.

      The three trucks diesel locomotives are French made, by Alsthom. They should be called B-B-B. Interestingly the same type of locomotives is also used in Burma (nowadays Myanmar). You can see them on my corresponding videos.

    I am stunned, i read a book that tells about all the locomotives and from the authors point of view of the first part exactly. And the book was printed almost 40 years ago. And still they have the same engines (like the Nr. 14!)

      Actually a good part of the mountain near Huigra collapsed in 1998 (because of El Niño rain). The railway was closed for about 15 years and resumed operations for tourist purposes only. That is to say that tourists prefer to see the good old steam locomotives even though the French made diesel engines are interesting as well.

      La locomotoras no contaminan mas que los buses y los coches numerosos que viajan en todo el pais. La contaminación que se ve no esta siempre la mas peligrosa. Una locomotora sola puede transportar centenas de pasajeros. Para hacer lo mismo, se necesitan docenas de buses, cada uno con un motor que contamina mucho también.

    Awesome video! It is always nice to see trains in foreign cultures. I would like to know what "feep" on the side of the tank car means, Google Translate couldn't help me. Is Tren Ecuador a tourist line or commercial railway?

    • @KochersbergTV
      @KochersbergTV  5 лет назад +2

      Thank you for your nice comment. FEEP means Ecuador Railways Public Enterprise (Ferrocarrilesf del Ecuador, Empresa Publica, I believe). The status of the railway is a bit special. On the one hand it is a public company. On the other hand, they organise trains only for tourist purposes. In Riobamba, I saw refurbished coaches, which look like they could be used for a kind of suburban traffic, but to the best of my knowledge, they are not in regular use.

      Sabes, tu idea no es tan descabellada, pero creo que para eso, como se hizo en la India, un magnate construyó una línea y una empresa privada sólo para el uso público, supongo que con locomotoras rápidas o al menos de buen caballaje, y que arrastren varios coches de dos pisos, además de poner un precio muy competitivo a los buses interprovinciales, se puede lograr una mayor capacidad de viajeros y de ganancias... pero lastimosamente ningún empresario ecuatoriano desea arriesgarse a ganar dinero así.

    Great Video! Did you get to use Locomotive #18 at Ibarra or Otavalo?

    • @KochersbergTV
      @KochersbergTV  8 лет назад

      +parkerfly2000 Unfortunately not. I saw her out of order in Ibarra depot. Not sure what the problem was, but the right cylinder was open: damages due to priming? Instead we had a brand new railcar, but obviously the staff was not used to making photo-(video)-stops, hence no video (nor still pictures for that matter). A pity as there are a few interesting spots along that route, not to speak of the turntable in Otavalo.

    • @parkerfly2000
      @parkerfly2000 8 лет назад

      +KochersbergTV, Sorry to hear that. In my opinion, #18 is the most beautiful locomotive in Ecuador (2-8-0, inside frame), and runs really smooth. I actually don´t remember the right cylinder being opened after the rebuild. Nevertheless, the left cylinder was opened about a month ago to inspect for damages after a problem with the left main rod, but it turned out to be fine. The locomotive is back on the track now. Your shots of locomotives #14 and #58 are beautiful. I noticed that this is not the regular Tren Crucero ride. Was it a charted ride?

    • @KochersbergTV
      @KochersbergTV  8 лет назад

      +parkerfly2000 Sorry, my mistake: it was the left (portside) cylinder. And yes, I rode only charter trains from Guayaquil to Salinas, partly steam partly diesel. The only disappointment was of course the closure of the line in the vicinity of the erupting Cotopaxi volcano. Before Ecuador, we also visited the turistren in Bogotá, Colombia and I also published a video of it.

      The pollution is not just a question of black smoke. The many buses replacing or complementing the train in Ecuador are polluting much more than these locomotives. Diesel engines, especially when poorly maintained produce a lot of nano particles, nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide which are equally polluting. The nastier pollution is usually not visible. And I am afraid Brazil is no example in this respect.

      Whether the tank wagon contains water or fuel (I would opt for the latter), its presence is probably justified by the fact No. 58 was making a much longer journey than No. 14. As for Eucalyptus trees, yes, there are plenty of those in Ecuador. Apparently they were planted as fire-wood as they grow faster than the indigenous species they now replace. Not unique in the world. I saw plenty in Eritrea as well, for the same reason plus fighting erosion.

      No railroad crossings was working correctly. The trains were accompanied by motorcyclists, charged with ensuring the security when crossing main roads. If you look carefully, you can see some of them in the first minutes of the video.

      There was a lot of people on the tender. Not sure what they were all doing there, but they were not brake-men. As for brake men, they were occasionally present on the train, even though the locomotives seem to be fitted with a donkey pump.

      The number of coaches is adapted to the number of passengers... and they have no smaller locomotives. Consider also that this line is sometimes very steep, such that trains are usually kept relatively short.

    I enjoy seeing working steam engines, but am disappointed that even oil fired boilers are so overfired that they belch black smoke almost constantly. It should be relatively easy to adjust the oil delivery system to burn efficiently.

      I suppose you realize that the staff knew I was there, filming. Apparently they were convinced I wanted a lot of smoke (and they wanted a tip!). It is not the case, but many people do. Otherwise, they are competent firemen.
