Jager to other dogs: "So I ate a treat, and I got all dizzy and sleepy. This woman I've never seen before took me into a room and started squirting me with water and touching me all over. She started shearing me like a sheep, then stopped and put a giant pink bandage around my head. Then she hoisted me up like they do on Broadway to make people fly. Then she gave me a blow dry. Then she took off the pink bandage and started shearing me again. Then she brushed me, and sent me home. It was so weird!"

I have had Akitas and like all intelligent and independent breeds they have limits to what they will and won't allow when it comes to touching them. My kids and I could do anything with mine with no worries but someone she did not know was not allowed to touch her at all. The vet once she knew him was allowed to touch her however he needed to for the most part and she would give warning one time if somebody was trying to go somewhere she wasn't OK with. If her warning was ignored plain and simple they were going to get bit and it was going to be bad, she didn't ever nip. She saved my ex from rape or worse. She could climb chain link fences and when my ex was heavily pregnant with my youngest son she got out of the car at home and a man ran up the driveway and grabbed her and attempted to drag her into the bushes, the dog was in the fenced side yard, saw it, climbed the fence and attacked him. Tore him up really good and continued tearing into him until he managed to get off the property and my ex said the dog immediately stopped at the property line even though their was no fence out front and the guy drug himself off down the street. She called 911 and they arrested him where he was laying in the road bleeding about 400 yards from our place. Turns out he was wanted and had outstanding warrants for rape and assault. She was one of the best dogs I have ever had.

The only American Akita I know is the sweetest big baby ever. She comes to the daycare I work at and I was SO nervous when I saw we were having an Akita come in but she was only 4 months old when she started daycare weekly. Idk if it’s because of the breeder, the owner or a combination of the two, but she’s got the BEST temperament. She’s extremely tolerant of everything in terms of grooming, different dog personalities and she’s so friendly to everyone she meets! I keep warning my coworkers “if you keep saying you want an Akita, know that they are nothing like this one” 😂

Respectful of their parents, definitely. Afraid of them, no.

So yeah respecting when someone tells you to knock it off by their body language or tone of voice is not a sign of abuse just mutual respect.

Yeah this. It is parents who can’t get respect any other way, that resort to hitting their kids.
And in reply to the people before you, demanding respect =/= abuse.
Despite not really being the type one would immediately respect at the time, my nieces that I took care of every summer respected me completely, because I was super considerate to their needs, and did everything I could to make their days fun and happy, while still making sure they did their chores. Even though they fought me hard at first, I never had to ask twice for them to do anything after a month, because they loved all the extra things I did for and with them, and attention I gave them.
It was the same thing with my unruly half brothers I met later in life.
Point being, you don’t have to be a big macho guy to get mutual respect.
Give respect, and you will get respect.
But if you give respect and don’t get it back, demand it, or make it known that’s unacceptable.

Beautiful American Akita. As a former Akita owner I would say you did the right thing to stop immediately. He won't hold a grudge against you, cause Akitas have a really long fuse so it takes some time to really stress them out, but if they growl it's important to take it seriously. On a well trained Akita it won't be the first, the second or sometimes even the third growl but if you push it too far they will do a short reminder that they said "No! Stop it!" to you. And that could hurt quite a bit, cause that snout is as powerful as it is beautiful.

Growling is communicating. When my "little one" barks or growls, strangers always need a new pair of knickers. She has a voice like made for a church choir🤣. Many Akitas are very talkative. Similar to huskies. Others are rather quiet. Like my Khaleesi. If she growls, then I know she's stressed about something. But that doesn't mean she's going to bite or tear someone apart. It just means that I'm getting a bit upset.

He looks great, you did a wonderful job. I'm wondering if he would be more behaved if he wasn't sedated. My really sweet rottie gets real fussy/cranky when sedated but still functioning. He was sweet when barely awake after his teeth cleaning, but was real cranky after the Benadryl the doctor prescribed for nail trimming. Hope you get another chance to groom him. Sending lots of love 💖 from sunny 🌞 Arizona 🌵. Take care of yourself and each other 😷.

P.s. I convinced him to let me cut his nails in trade for his dinner. (Don't panic, at 140 pounds he could afford to miss a few groceries.)
Here's what I did. I fixed his dinner as usual. I sat down and showed him that there was food in the bowl. Then I showed him the clippers... He walked away. I went and did something. A little while later, I called him over and showed him the food, then the clippers. He just sat there and he gave his paw when I asked for it. But, he left when the clippers approached. A while later, I repeated. This time I was able to get a snip! Progress! He got his dinner. Everytime I had the patience, I did this. The next session, I was allowed to trim, one nail (a couple of snips). Then I was allowed to trim his nails without bribing him with his dinner. But if he refused, I just waited until dinner time and went through the routine. Usually only cutting one foot at a time. Eventually, he got where he would doze off during the trim and I'd even get to use a nail file to get anything that might snag. 💖🌞🌵😷

I had this happen to me once, that the animal fell asleep while work on it was done.
Diffence was, the animal was a horse, and I was currently holding one of its hooves up, so the farrier could work on it, when the sleeping horse shifted its weight on that foot.
We both fell, the horse was wide awake afterwards, and I had some backpain.

I'm an owner of a long haired American Akita as well. Male, 5yo and quite reactive with other animals. We've never sedated him for grooming appointments, and it's really hard to find someone willing to take him in. We tend to bathe him only once a year, in the summer, to reduce stress. He always leaves the appointment absolutely exhausted and usually the groomers aren't able to do a perfect job (mainly because they get scared once he starts growling). Our family understands the challenge, and we hope to get our hands on some proper tools to start bathing and grooming him at home, with the care and comfort he deserves.

Akitas give very little expression or forewarning before they bite/attack. Sometimes you can't hear their growl because it's so low. For example, I feel her growling because the lead vibrates in my hand but nobody hears it and she's just standing still - not easy to read. Once she was sedated, knocked out on the vet's floor. When the vet came in, I thought I heard a truck driving in the nearby road. But no - it was her growling on the floor. She's also very good at taking the muzzle out and even though I know her, I seriously fear for my hands if the muzzle isn't on at the vet's.

You did an awesome job! Also was super impressed about how calm he was with the muzzle. I also have a dog who hates having his paws touched, but loves people. I cut his nails at home or muzzled with a vet. The one time I sent him to a groomer I watched from afar as the groomer would lift his paw and he would give a little growl. They immediately gave him space and reassured him and he happily gave them body wiggles and kisses. They tried this like 2 more times. Poor scared boy released his glands he was so scared the 3rd time they tried.
