    Man, what Chris says about making coding a hobby is spot on! I've been trying to learn to code for 7 years and it never stuck, then I started building coding projects based around video games and since I love gaming I've been hella consistent with it everything started to stick. So I've learned more code in the past 8 months than I ever did in the last 7 years because I centered it around my hobby. I was even able to step in at my actual job and help the company out with a website problem recently

      @@markevans6691 Oh yeah bro, basically I just started thinking about my favorite games and how I would rank them also how I would review them if I were a review site. So I started building projects like game review sites kinda like IGN or Gamespot. And of course, they're terrible websites because I still don't know how to code really well but they keep me engaged in the sense that I'm learning to code something I REALLY care about which has led me to stick with it through all the tediousness of learning new coding concepts since I could then take these concepts I learned and make my game website look even cooler lol and it's worked wonders learning this way!

      same here, I also relate to you in the situation. As I kept going from tutorial after tutorial, when it came time for me to start building something I didn't know where to start or what to do, I got completely lost. Eventually I needed to break out of that habit of just watching a bunch of tutorials and to start actually build things, from then on my learning has grown little by little once I began to build projects. It's important that we don't only just watch a bunch of tutorials and call it a day, it's not enough to just only learn the code but to actually build projects from what you've learned. I wish you all the best in your development journey!

    • @johanneswelsch
      @johanneswelsch 6 месяцев назад +13

      You've been watching tutorials the wrong way. If the teacher makes a todo app, you make a kill list. Same thing, but different. If the instructor makes a twitter clone, you make a youtube clone (or whatever you want, but something else). This way you can't copy much, only concepts. Everything like the navbar and components and styling will be totally different, so you will have to think a lot and solve problems that wouldn't be there had you just simply blindly copied things.

    ive had exact same thoughts, at this point its who can endure the most and not quit lol. eventually the job market will improve and there will be less people to hire due to all the ai fears and job market fears, etc and u will become one of the few best options for entry or junior level. if u wanna quit then quit, but know that in a year or few years later when tech booms again u will wonder why u gave up, wondering why u keep hopping onto the next train and never getting to the end. If u just endured u would have a job in tech by now. Dont live with regret, work hard and eventually the opportunities will come, and when that opportunity comes will u be ready?
    Why do i know this? Because I've given up on things too many times when things got a bit hard, 100% regret percentage. Never again, idc if this takes longer than I hope if i have to eat shit for a while so be it, I just know im never giving up again.

    great video Chris! I thought it was interesting to me that you mentioned that we should treat coding as a hobby, that it's more than just lines and lines of code, but a skill that enhances critical thinking and problem solving. It's been a struggle to me lately when learning to code and doing job searching at the same time, while also working. But I do also believe that there's still opportunity out there for people like myself that want to be a developer, I still get notifications on my LinkedIn everyday!
    For all this time that I've dedicated to take time and learn to code, I still haven't given up on myself despite the struggle and the challenge of learning to code while job searching and working all at the same time, I dived into this some years ago and I keep reminding myself to push forward. Surely it will be challenging, and there will be a lot of struggle involved, but it can still be done.

Soon I will start on my own projects and I was just thinking on how I could be more unique than others out there and then I found this video and you’re talking about how most portfolio’s are the same due to the over saturation of tutorials online. I completely get that and I think what people are missing is the actual point of those tutorials. It’s to learn and make your own projects with that knowledge, and not to just copy. I usually don’t comment but I really enjoyed this video, so thanks. 🫡 back to learning! Lol

I hope anyone who sees this starts immediately taking online community college courses and researches getting an online Bachelor of Science at Oregon State University. Quick question: how long does it take to learn python to make simple programs in the console, and how long to fully learn python? (I started Python recently, want to have an idea on how long it might take)

    Call center worker currently, we have AI deployed. Customers LOATHE IT. I do too. I want to interact with a human when I call a company, not a bot. And I'm not opposed to bots but they're really REALLY badly implemented even at a fortune 500, industry-recognized company.
    Also given all the accidents Tesla's auto-pilot causes, I don't see truck drivers being replaced but supplemented. Waymo also made it clear we need humans at the wheel.

    The common misunderstanding is thinking that new tech puts people out of work because 1 guy can do what used to take 10 guys. In 1850, dirt was moved by a shovel and a mule drawn wagon. With modern tech, one man can do the work of 100. But this just means we move far more dirt than they would have dreamed of in 1850. In 1996, if you wanted an online photo album, you needed to know how to code or hire someone who did. Today, you can make one with social media for free with no training at all. Does that mean that all of the guys writing code in 1996 are put out of work by social media? NOPE! Because online photo albums are cheaper, more people have them today than in 1996. So many people have them that it's almost become something "everyone has." People have more than one. People start new ones just for a new business or a major life change.

    AI tools like CodePal have the potential to reduce the need for junior devs in one team. These days, it takes much less devs to develop a product with these tools.
    That’s an issue, we need to be honest about it.
    If we look at the next 5 years, these AI tools will get better and better, until we get to a point where one senior architect can design a system, and let the AI code generators write the code lines.

    Well it’s also the fact that people are now using apps and websites that don’t need coding so they don’t need to study it but if you look at it from another aspect as time pass those who stopped or never got into it cuz they thought it was not worth it,they won’t have the knowledge about coding.but as time passes that just makes us more dependent to those apps and websites just like we’re now to cellphone 😅before we memorize all the phone numbers we have now in our 📱 but now we’re done if we lose it😂so I think we’ll need coding for one thing or another since those apps and websites who helps you make websites without coding need to be coded no?🤔😁

    Or if your tech job doesn't succeed, you could always become a truck or bus driver. If you got a CDL, you won't have to worry about your resume standing out from thousands of applicants, you won't have to worry about getting the runaround, you won't have to worry about being taken for granted; you won't have to worry about A.I., a bad economy, your job being outsourced to somebody who lives in India; or any of that. You get to travel, you could pretty much PICK your job, and you're usually hired instantly. Plus, the money is good, I don't work that much and I still code on the side and do whatever I want during my super HUGE breaks (like now)!! I drive a bus and driving a bus can be as fun as playing a video game!
