- In this video, I'm going to be going over the salary I earned for my first junior developer job. These stats are based on when I was hired June of 2017 I did look up the company in 2021 as I was doing this video and they have been acquired so I'm sure things have changed quite a bit. I'm splitting this video into 3 parts - Industry/Company info, Job Description and the Salary Offer.
I also discuss whether or not I had the job requirements based on the job description.
Thank you for watching :)

💁🏾♀️ Who Am I:
Greetings, my name is Tiffany! I have been a Software Engineer since 2017. I have mostly focused on backend engineering specifically using PHP/Laravel and MySQL. I enjoy the journey of learning, contributing to making a better product and working with a great team.
I first learned about code back in 2009 but didn’t really understand the entire tech field at the time. Later on, I decided to join a coding bootcamp called Coding Dojo, to improve my tech skills - It definitely was the best decision for me! It was a long journey and I started documenting my journey via youtube.

@@carpediem327 Hey, thanks for watching this video 😃 I did not have to whiteboard for this job interview but I did have to solve problems on a computer working with 2 other devs (they weren’t able to book the room that had the whiteboard in it so that had the next beat thing).
For other interviews, I did have to solve problems on a whiteboard.
Hey Tiffany, thanks for the informative video
Just wanted to quickly touch on what questions you were asked specifically with examples in the interview?
Did they ask you data structures questions or more basic javascript based questions?
Cheers
Best counter offer statement I ever heard was when you counter with something higher than you know they can match and they tell you no.....you deadly serious say: 'Well how close can you get?'
I like this approach!
Thank you for this video! Truly a great reminder to keep in mind that countering is always an option (:
Absolutely 🙌🏾🙌🏾
I love seeing Web Developers that look like me... I'm currently in an Associate's program for IT/Web Development... I pray to be excellent within my new career 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Thank you for this comment! This is why I started my channel, representation matters.
Best of luck on your journey! I pray it all goes well. Let me know if I can help.
@@Tiffanyt899 I would love to pick your brain about your humble beginnings. We all know that book knowledge doesn't always translate to real world knowledge!

Noicee I’m starting an associates program later this year
Great video ! 🙌💪
I’m from Fort Worth I feel like I was supposed to see this , great video btw!
Hey neighbor 👋🏾 Glad you found this video helpful!
Wow this would literally be my dream job posting lol. Currently hunting for my first jr dev job and Im coming from being a leasing manager for 7 years. yardi and all those programs I am advanced at. I need to get off of indeed and start calling some property managers
Best of luck!
Thanks for the video. I’m currently teaching myself code and taking TeamTreeHouse’s full stack track. Videos like these help a lot for people wanting to get into the field. Do you have any recommendations for beginner projects? I want to have 3 but am having a hard time thinking of three to do
It’s awesome that you are teaching yourself to code! I’m glad I can be a small part in your journey. Here’s a list of potential projects, they are backend but they can easily be adjusted to include frontend as well: gist.github.com/MWins/41c6fec2122dd47fdfaca31924647499
The best projects are creating things based on needs you see or experience in your every day life.
Happy coding!
@@Tiffanyt899 you are amazing. Thank you so much. You don’t know how much you just helped me. I really appreciate this. I’m going to sub just so I can keep you updated on my journey. Thank you so much !
You’re welcome! I’d love to hear about your journey.
If you have other questions, reach out. You can reach me best by social media (link in description).
I'm on the same track as you Darrien!! best of luck. Do you think you'll do the TechDegree in the end?
Update ?
Thanks. Still working on a few assignments so I can graduate soon From Bootcamp. I had a few MIS courses in business however it’s not what my degree was primarily in. I would like to know more about the resume.
That’s awesome! I’ll work on getting some a video out about the resume.
The none counter. Haha. I've done this before, but in the welding field. I was like I'll take $20/hr. The hiring manager was like okay, we can start you at $23/hr because I rather not have you ask for money in a few weeks. Lolol. I was like sweet. Where do I sign?! Haha
I'm currently 19.No experience in coding but I'm planning on joining a full year course for Full Stack/Front end web development. It will be tough because I have a toxic family and no money but I believe in myself.I hope I can amount to greatness and have a successful career 🙏
Best of luck to you!
What course are you doing?
You can do this!!!🙏🏾
Hope you’re doing well
Is there room for negotiation? Great phrasing of the question. I am gonna go and apply it that today, as I didn't know how to word this for my first contract as a web dev.
It's a nice way to phrase it, but comes across as you're unsure of yourself. Being nice will help you a lot but in this context, a good negotiator will smell blood in the water at that point and they'll call your bluff. You just need to be gutsy and say "I would love to earn $X" and expect them to counter. Sometimes they don't, and you can celebrate!
My first dev job annual pay was 45k and I also didn't know any better as far as negotiation. I was also in a super toxic environment then so I know I wouldn't have felt comfortable haha.
Yikes, toxic environments are no bueno! Glad you were able to move on from that job.
I'm glad I know more about negotiating now - I didn't know enough about negotiation and was also very nervous about it those days to go through with it.
@@Tiffanyt899 I wonder if going to some type of swap meet, or place to negotiate would've been helpful for this? Haha.
😂 Perhaps
$45k or N45k

Great video! What coding bootcamp did you attend? And did you have any internships prior to landing your first job?
I went to coding dojo. No internships before my first job. I did have one after my first job for about 3 months.
Thank you for this video, it’s really helpful in understanding what my future experience could be like. I’m just beginning to learn coding. I’ve started with HTML, and will start CSS soon. I’m curious about full stack, because I want to create my own app one day as it’s a project I would like to do for myself. Including a site for my own business, but I’d also like to become a software engineer. I’m stuck between the two, would it be okay to do both?
Could you please advise me on this? 😊
I have the opportunity to do a free bootcamp- I can I keep between software engineering or web development, I want to do both. I could pick one and learn the other on my own time. Any advice would be really appreciated!
Hi Jessica, definitely pick either - dev skills are they pretty easy to pick up. Once you’ve learned a language for instance Javascript, other languages such as Python are easier to learn. I do recommend Javascript if you’re wanted to do full stack since you can build an entire app with Javascript.
@@Tiffanyt899 Hi Tiffany, thank you for advice. This has alleviated some pressure I was feeling. This is good to know, I thought software engineering would be more difficult. But I think I’m going to go for the web development/ full stack bootcamp to start as I have an interest in it. And learn more about software engineering after. Thank you! 😌
I noticed that you said that you had a bachelor's degree with some computer science classes. You don't even have to have a bachelor's degree for any kind of programming job.. usually 99.9% of companies will give you a coding interview to see if you carry the needed knowledge for the job. If you can pass the coding interview they'll hire you usually. But that piece of paper doesn't mean anything. And nowadays college degrees don't carry the weight They Carried 30 years ago.
Though a degree is not needed, I received mine over 10 years ago when bootcamps weren’t popular and recruiters were more brutal with their qualifications.
These days, people still get CS degrees if they decide they want to - Everyone has their own path and that’s okay.
thank you for this
i know it is kind of off topic but does anybody know of a good place to watch newly released movies online?
@Nathanael Marcel Flixportal xD
@Emmitt Jesse thanks, I went there and it seems like a nice service :) Appreciate it !
@Nathanael Marcel glad I could help =)
Hi Tiffany, Would you please make a video on getting a remote job in USA as an entry level frontend engineer. I am really good in my skills but I don't have a degree. Thanks
$75,000 is a bargain for a company looking for a developer, nothing less!
do you live in michigan ? does they pay much money ?
Yes and even $50k five years ago seems bargain basement low! That’s $26/hr for someone with an IT Bachelors, experience teaching and developer experience?!? Hindsight is 20-20. Lesson learned!
Great content! I'm currently looking for a quality full stack bootcamp to attend this year. Which one did you go to?
I went to Coding Dojo, that was a long time ago though 😃
I recommend eDX
Great video 😀 very upfront
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching 😃
Awesome video. Unfortunately I dont have a college degree. Got into this field because I heard there were opportunities without one
There are. Keep working. You’ll get really good offers
You can get into this field without a degree. Keep learning and interviewing.
may I ask if you have a job as software engineer yet as I'm the same boat with you now.
Thank you for your content. Given the information of this content, are you based in Texas. I am a developer looking to relocate to texas
Thanks for watching! Yes I am, Dallas.
@@Tiffanyt899 Nice!!!!. I have tons of questions. I don't mind shooting you an email if that works for you.

@@Tiffanyt899 thanks a ton. Look forward to connecting
Just started learning coding at the age of 26.... ☺
Nice! It’s never too late
50,000 seems kind of low for a web developer salary. Is this still the entry level salary? I know a lot of positions now are paying at least 70,000 base and I wouldn't ask for not a dime under that.
Was it your plan to stay for 6 months or did it just work out like that?
I was laid off after 6 months for my first dev job
When you counter back is their a certain range that you should stay in ? Like if they offer 50,000 should you only counter within a certain amount ?
For me, if they offered $50, I would ask within $10-15k of that amount. Now, it’s also important to check the job description- do they mention the salary range there? Also, check online to see what others are making with your level of experience.
hello i have a question I just complete my high school degree and i want to be a full stack web developer soo kindly tell me what should i chose in college associate degree in web development or a bachelor in computer science.
plzz plzzz reply me plzzzzz
There’s not a one size all solution for what you’re asking. If you want to have a traditional approach to coding and can afford (time and money) to get a computer science degree, then go that route. On the other hand, if not, then go for the other option. Every program is different - Ask them questions about what they are teaching and the result they expect a student to gain after their program.
@@Tiffanyt899 i have not much time and money as you say then i do associate degree in web development or not?
I have some programming problems I don't know if you can help
What kind of problems are you referring to?
How did you learn to code? Boot camp? Self taught?
A little of both - Self taught for about a year before joining a coding bootcamp. Check out the full story here: ruclips.net/video/o34jEF7pxBc/видео.html
Do you think I could get hired as a junior.developer if I live in nicaragua?
Anything is possible. You’ll have to keep an eye out for remote jobs hiring juniors.
Okay here’s my guess: $75k-$78k👀
Good guess!
I see now it was not a good guess😭🙃 Great video! I rarely see people actually go through the job description of their position so I love how you added that!
😄 Thank you!
hmmm i think your salary for your first job was probably around 30,000 a year.
😅 A little bit higher
I got week interpersonal skills 😭
There’s always room to improve and get better 💪🏾
80k?
I’m guessing 50k or 60k salary
Which city do you live in ?
Dallas
@@Tiffanyt899 ok , I live in Austin . What is the entry salary for a web developer over there in 2021 ?
@@salladiallo9766 Salary is going to be dependent on experience and the industry you are working in. If I had to ballpark it, I’d say $50k but do know that that’s not always the case. The number could be higher or lower depending on a lot of factors.
There are some websites that can help you determine what is a fair amount:
