I'm 45 and my first car was '71 Malibu. Swapped out the tired 307 for a lightly warmed over 350 backed with a TH350. Bench seat, 4 wheel drum, power steering and A/C. Ripped the dead air con out when I swapped the engine to save weight. I later planned to Vintage Air it before she decided she wanted to be a BBQ more than she wanted to continue to be my daily driver. Miss it to this day, but they're so out of range monetarily, I doubt I'll ever be able to own one again.

My first car, I was forced to buy, at exactly 16 years old, by my 28 year career Army Dad, was a $900, purple with black stripe 1973 Gremlin 232 6 cylijder auto. I told my Dad after almost daily getting into fights at school, that I was going to wrap it around a telephone pole if he didn't let me sell it. I used the $1000 I got for the Gremlin with a new $39.95 Earl Sheibs special paint job, and I than bought a $1000, black on black 1966 Chevelle Malibu, 327/375hp auto and went from being called not so nice names, to car wise, one of the coolest kids in high school. By the way April could pick up my 63 year old self in a YUGO! As Always, May God Bless you and yours! 😇

My cousin had a 70 Chevelle with the 454. Black on Black but no stripes. He later had thin pinstripes added to the fender and body lines front to back with little flourishes at the tips. For the 1st two years he had it he drove it a few times a week but then someone tried to steal it out of his driveway and he cleared out his garage and the car lived there for the next 45 or so years. The only time it came out was for maintenance or the 4th of July. He fired it up. Came down the driveway and as soon as the front tires hit the pavement he let it rip. Always 10 minutes later he would be back and put the car away in the garage for another year. When he passed away his new wife sold the car before any of the family could even ask about it. She HATED the Chevelle but loved the fact that it was worth a boatload of cash which she got when it sold.

The only cool thing about not having this car anymore, I sold it, after 3 months, for a little over 3 times what I bought it for. In the mid 80's This thing was THE CAR. Everywhere I went, EVERYWHERE, people wanted to buy it. If I parked it anywhere, it was always within my sight. Red with White Ralley stripes, Black interior and Cowl Induction. I put 2 sets of rear tires on it, in 3 months! LOL. Loved that thing but, could not justify the insurance as a High Schooler. It went to a good home, someone that was vetted by my Drag racing neighbor, and he still has it!

I took my driving test at the age of 16 in my mother’s 1969 Chevelle Malibu. It had the basic 350 engine, but the carburetor was badly in need of a rebuild. The car almost stalled while I was making a left turn, but I kept it going by keeping my left foot on the brake and hitting the gas with my right. When I let off the brake the car lurched forward, and I made the turn without stalling. But I got marked off for ‘lack of smoothness’ or some such thing. But there was a happy ending. The minimum passing score for the driving test was 70 and my score was a 71. I got my license, and I’ve kept it for the last 51 years.

In 1970, my uncle came by my parents home with a 454 Chevelle in a metallic blue-grey colour. I was six at time, but I remember it as "the car where the back end kept wanting to pass the front end." I know it was a 454 because there was a raised metal 454 logo on the dash in front of the passenger seat that I ran my finger along repeatedly, In my memory, it was a notch-back, but since they didn't make notch-nack Chevelles in 1970 or put 454s into the earlier cars, I'll put that down to the Mandella Effect. He stayed with us for a bit over a week, just long enough for me to fall in love with that car. Today I have a 1:18 scale die-cast model of a 1970 LS6 in approximately the same colour which my wife bought me as a pre-emptive measure, and I have promised never to have more 1:1 scale cars than I can drive in a week.

We had a drag race between a 1970 Chevelle with a 454 and a 1968 Camaro with a 350 back in the 70's when I was in High school. The Camaro didn't want to race for obvious reasons. The guy in the Chevelle said he wouldn't leave till the Camaro hit 2nd gear. When he left,
you could tell the Chevelle was going to catch him, and beat him in the 1/4 mile. Which he did. That was one of the fastest cars I ever saw.

Slight correction here Tyler. In 1964/1965 a True SS will have the numbers 138 in the VIN. My first car was a 1965 Chevy Chevelle Malibu SS. A good friend of mine from high school had a 1964 Chevy Chevelle Malibu SS. And they both had 138 in the VIN's. I'm not sure when they stopped putting the 138 in the VIN.

My oldest brother bought one in 1970. I don't know the proper name for the color, It was a light sage green, with a green vinyl top and white stripe package. And as a 9 year old, I was scared to death of it, but I also thought it was effing' awesome at the same time. That's my book for the day...

I owned a 1970 GM A-body for 31 years. They are simply right, in a whole lot of ways. Easy to drive, easy to fix, easy to modify, and uncomplicated. Solid engineering as well, and durable. At least mine had very high build quality from Flint. A 68 to 72 GM A-body is extremely popular for a reason. Not to mention GM Design was hitting it out of the ballpark with physical appeal.

My first car was a 10-year old beater 69 Chevelle with a 327 and automatic. It had sat in a driveway for a couple years but I got it running. I had to wire in a bypass switch for the starter and a manual choke control and the ignition switch was wore out so it could be started with almost any key. It was a filthy beats but I wish I kept it and cleaned it up. It wasn't really special but it could have been restored nicely.

My dad had ine of these. Worked a whole summer truck driving long haul from New York to California fast hauling ironically jet engines. He could get there in 3 days and that fot him a huge bonus. Then some old lady running late to a doctor's Appointment slammed into the side of it whike he was at a red light. She went up over the median and hit him doing about 35. Actually launched him out the other side of the car and into the grass. Then she tried to claim the accident was his fault somehow. My dad being a former USMC scout sniper was about to snap her neck when she came up yelling at him that he just stayed there parked when she came over the median, he could have moved safe,y past where she ended up. Like the mental gymnastics.....but ultimately she was given a ticket and then my dad got a 72 Barracuda.

I am a little tired of how every You Tube car person (Hoovie included) Push used imported cars then bemoan the faults they have when they are old and have some miles on them. All cars do that. • @fireman1294

The “rock crusher” was the Muncie M22 close ratio. It had the same close ratio as the M21 but the 22 had a different degree of gear teeth for 1st through 3rd gear. And 4th was the normal. Anyway the teeth change allowed it to handle much more torque but it did make the transmission have a distinct grinding or winding sound. Hence the name Rock Crusher. So if you notice the sound from the trans distinctly change from the first 3 girls than 4th then it’s a rock crusher. If it doesn’t then it’s an M21. But no one makes aftermarket 4 speeds with the close ratio gears of the M21 M22 muncie. 2:20, 1:64, 1:28, 1:00 are the gear ratios. It’s the closest ratio trans ever made by a manufacturer.
