They would only display a spiteful vengeance over something as petty as not having his ego stroked. Look, I was a theist before. Of a couple different stripes, actually, namely christian (southern baptist denomination) and Pagan. When I was a christian, There were some things in the teachings that I agreed with: the endorsement for compassion and charity, the advisement to not lash out in anger, and instead "turn the other cheek" and not perpetuate violence. But, there were other things that just did not seem right or justified: such as being told to fear someone who supposedly loved me, lest I tempt his wrath; the implications that women (such as my mother) were less worthy of respect, authority, and agency than were men; and hundreds of silly rules that make no sense as to why they would be "abominable" in the sight of an all-mighty being (such as not eating shellfish or pork, wearing certain types of clothes, strictures against working on certain days of the week, etc). I was blind back then to even worse portions of the biblical story that would have incensed me should I have understood the stories for what they were about: such as god calling his servants to commit genocide against neighboring tribes and permitting slavery to continue rather than to command its abolition. I left christianity because I could not reconcile the vain and wrathful character that was in the early books with the "all loving, all powerful" being later on that I was ensured was the not just one and the same but THREE and the same. Look, I was a theist before. Of a couple different stripes, actually, namely christian (southern baptist denomination) and Pagan. When I was a christian, There were some things in the teachings that I agreed with: the endorsement for compassion and charity, the advisement to not lash out in anger, and instead "turn the other cheek" and not perpetuate violence.
But, there were other things that just did not seem right or justified: such as being told to fear someone who supposedly loved me, lest I tempt his wrath; the implications that women (such as my mother) were less worthy of respect, authority, and agency than were men; and hundreds of silly rules that make no sense as to why they would be "abominable" in the sight of an all-mighty being (such as not eating shellfish or pork, wearing certain types of clothes, strictures against working on certain days of the week, etc).
I was blind back then to even worse portions of the biblical story that would have incensed me should I have understood the stories for what they were about: such as god calling his servants to commit genocide against neighboring tribes and permitting slavery to continue rather than to command its abolition.
I left christianity because I could not reconcile the vain and wrathful character that was in the early books with the "all loving, all powerful" being later on that I was ensured was the not just one and the same but THREE and the same. It. Made. No. Sense.
Paganism attracted me because it encouraged the virtuous behaviors that I outlined above without demanding blind obedience. It instead encouraged me to think about WHY an action was wise and beneficial and what consequences my actions would have upon others. Not for the sake of my soul, but for the sake of THEIR LIVES, whether that be the safety, security, or quality of their life and liberty. It offered me divine teachers that did not seek adulation, but rather the joy that a parent sees in watching their children mature.
And, eventually, I did mature. I realized that their is actually no verifiable evidence for the existence of any divinity, pagan, christian, or otherwise. But, the lessons that I learned were still valuable.
I sincerely doubt that you will read all of this, but, I hope that you'll at least see it and read most of it.
