Okay, hands down Forsaken Priests have by far the coolest priest lore out of any of the races.
What if The Light really isn't a physical entity or moral energy? What if it's just the concentrated willpower and positive feelings of a person? It might explain why Goblins can wield The Light through greed, which seems like a total flaw in whatever is controlling The Light, if there's even anything. It is basically a spiritually powered version of mana, making all paladins and priests kindof like Green Lanterns.
+Sean Finch I have a far better story that backs this up, in my opinion. Tirion was "striped" from the Light, he lost everything and was hopeless, he thought they could take the Light away from him. He thought there was nothing left for him, he was an exile, and he couldn't weild the Light anymore, he felt empty. But when Eitrigg was lying there dying, he passionatly wanted to safe him, with all of his will and being and then the Light started flowing through him again and since then he became more powerfull the more compassionate he became, even shattering Frostmourne. Makes sense, in my opinion.
+Michael L. I too would say that priests don't necessarily use light magic. The spec says "holy" not "light". So a holy priest is focusing on the positive effects of his willpower while a discipline priest is using his well discipline and strength per se without any strong feelings I would say. The shadow priest is just using the darker range of effects that come from his belief. Priests of any religion are masters at manipulating the minds of people around them. They can inspire them, refresh their spirit and body and can also torture and confuse their enemies.
As you said the ingame mechanics don't fully represent the lore and for me a priest of the light can use a mind blast and shadow word pain and all this without him being all black and stuff. The spells don't exist in the world like this but his powerful will and his knowledge about minds and psyche enable him to torture people as well as to heal and inspire. They are just two sides of the same medaillon. That is of course not canon but because of there being no really satisfying lore about that I really like to theorize by myself and for me that fits the phantasy the most. Also undead priests not "wielding the light" but really being shadow priests. The shadow for them is holy. There is nothing paradox about that. It is more paradox that an undead priest would talk about the light in the church. I would think that preaching about the shadow would be a lot more inspiring for a forsaken in the church.

I think the light is a cosmic force opposite of shadow, and those two make up the basis of reality, and it seems to be powered by willpower and one's convictions and belief in their truths so this would make sense, but just like the shadow can spawn beings of pure chaos, so does the light spawn creatures of absolute purity; the naaru.

Well it seems like the power of a shadow priest comes from the Void.
Right, and as the naaru have demonstrated, the Light and the Void are two sides of the same coin. Which would explain why priests have a natural affinity for using the power of the Void.
Nobbel87 Despite this being 2 years old now and you might have covered it in a newer video but in one of the books Blizzard had made there is a brief mention of a dead old god under Light's Hope Chapel in Eastern Plague Lands. It was a benevolent Old God and died because it refused to feast off suffering like the other evil old gods did or something was apparently a large conduit for powers of light. Hence why the chapel is there and why Arthas/Lich King couldn't step foot there or something.
I always found that interesting and wanted more about it but could never find anything. If you ever learned anything more about it that would be great to hear about.

I have just read the Unbroken. I have never read something so heart wrenching, I fought hard not to cry. Nobundo was a wonderful character, his constant plea to feel the light, denied over and over again. It was so sad to read, but when the elements heard his plea and the hope they gave him, it was just an utterly amazing story to read. Thank you Nobbel, thank you so very much for telling me about this, thank you so very much. I have a much larger respect for the way of Shamanism that I thought was just some boring class on WoW. Funny how I'm talking about Shamanism in your video about The Light. But once again thank you Nobbel.
I remember first leveling my human paladin during classic. The lore I was given from paladin-specific quests was that the paladins wield the Light through good deeds, whether protecting people, donating goods, or slaying evil (especially undead). The Light was always mentioned as a belief system (the paladin code, you might call it), but it was not really addressed as an organized religion like we have with Christianity in real life.
So my undead shadow priest is actually lore friendly, cool! Thanks Nobbel
The fact that Tyranda didnt wanna talk about if Elune could be a naaru is like asking a religious person here to reason logical about his or her god or holy storys, they tent to be either dismissive or aggressive.
But since Cenarious returnd in cata, Valen should ask him who his mommy are.

I got an idea that makes sense. Ok so your suggested that the demon blood in the orc veins could be a reason why they can't contact the light. So during the fighting in shatarath, what if there was so much orcish blood in the air, it became a red mist, so it corrupted the dreani who were there, and cut them off from the light?
I like this brutal idea.
Actually, if you hear Nobundo's story, broken can wield the light. Or, another facet as he called it in the story.

And that is when I began to understand the voice. It was coming from the wind itself and it had much to say!

It spoke to me of secrets and power, and also of truths.
The Light had not forsaken the Broken! The fel energies that the orcs had wielded long ago against the draenei had infused us, causing a break in our ability to be heard by, or perhaps to hear, the Light.
The same that had been responsible for the degradation of our bodies.
But our spirits were not broken, and the air offered to me another path, through which I might deliver my people.
*What was that?*
It taught me the path of shamanism, which in a way is just another facet of the Light.
Joining the wind was the water of the oasis, the fire from my camp and the earth upon which I sat. All had something to say.
Over the next few years they taught me what it was to call upon and be one with the elements of the world.
And they told me that the worlds of all of the stars in the sky, even this one, are made up of these elements."

+The Potato I figured the reason why broken can't access the light is because they are permanently tainted by fel-magic, so they can no sooner wield the light than a demon could.

I'm overjoyed this video actually covered the forsaken wielding the light, it's such an overlooked aspect that everyone assumes exist only in gameplay and not in lore. Yet their tragic tale of sacrifice has become one of my favorite 'little things' in wow. There's also been a few statements of undead light priests having feelings return to them as if the light is trying to drag them from undeath and back to 'true life', but failing. Regardless your videos never disappoint, keep it up.
Maybe Goblins believe in some sort of Invisible Hand guiding their economy to some unknown good?

I really like the blue post about the forsaken using the light. You didn't mention about the prolonged effects of wielding the light though: that sometimes the forsaken flesh becomes living again, bit by bit, Just enough that they can smell their own rotting skin, just enough that they can taste the decaying muscles in their mouth, and just enough that it hurts when they become injured again.
I love listening to you talk. You sound like a documentary narrator (which, I guess you technically are, lol).

I believe Broken Draenei are akin to the Wretched Blood Elves. In that the light is such a powerful energy that the inability to grasp it spirals one into a destructive withdrawal
I want to think that the greed behind goblins that use the light would be similar to "hey, if I pray and do holy things I won't have my soul devoured by whatever hell there is in WoW, right?" Also, I can't remember where I saw this but I'm sure there is a blue post somewhere in the forums that explains that the light, while giving a sensation of love/burn to the body, actually affects the soul, hence why undead are so weak to it, since the undead's soul is only half in the body (only taking a "poke" of light to push it out). Great video, as always :)

I will resub to WoW if Lady Liadrin and the Blood Knights get some more lore spotlight. Literally my favorite thing about BC.
The Blood Knights have been promised for WoD. No news on Liadrin but I'd imagine she'll show up.
The draenei and blood elves have become so intertwined that, were it not for being joined to opposing factions, they would likely be allies in any other scenario- sort of like how the night elves and the tauren have very similar cultures and may get along very well were it not for the Warsong clan of orcs gathering lumber from Ashenvale. More lore on the draenei in WoD will hopefully mean more inclusion of the Blood Knights as well.
Lununguis Well, Blood Elves caused the Draenei to crash on Azeroth in the first place then started spying on them, and even attacking them. I'm not sure if they'd be out-and-out allies, but they wouldn't be bitter enemies.
Also, Tauren and Night Elves heavily, and if I remember correctly, sometimes violently disagree about who were the first Druids and about Elune and the Earthmother.
There are reasons the people are on the factions they're on.
Velen reignited the Sunwell and shows no animosity toward the blood elves. The draenei respect him, and that may be enough.
I had not known that about the night elves and the tauren, though; thank you for the insight. :)
Lununguis Since the Taurens joined the Horde, they have joined the ranks of the Frostwolf and Warsong clans, Warsong clan has a heavy dispute for the control of Ashenvale with the Night Elves that live there, ans another thing that sets them apart, but at Hyjal and the Moonglade they train together like brothers, look at Anren Shadowseeker and Tholo Whitehoof, there are "Neutral" druids for both factions that are form the Cenarion Circle/Expedition. Blood Elves and Draenei have respect for each other, since they both defeated Kil'jiden and Veleen re-ignited the sunwell, with that I think Draenei NPCs should be stationed in Silvermoon and Blood Elf NPCs should be stationed in The Exodar, friendly to both factions, also, Draenei should be neutral in-game with Silvermoon NPCs(with the ability to hit/kill them) as BE's should with The Exodar

In the beginning when you are reading the story, the Alliance fleet goes to retake Northwatch Hold, NOT attack Orgrimmar. Jaina went to Orgrimmar and was going to drown it until she was talked out of it by that dragon guy. Meanwhile at Northwatch there was a massive battle with the Alliance taking victory.
wrong after theramore was bombed varian went to war but garrosh summoned kraken jaina saved them and together fell back and re marched and took northwatch

The Questline with the dying soldier in Icecrown is a Tribute to a Brother of a Blizzard employee, who died of cancer.Like in the Q,the doctors did everythin, but couldn´t save him. Metzen implementet the Q-Line. This story is revealed in a Blizzard documentary video.

Humans were taught to wield the Light by the titan, Tyr. He had a silver gauntlet which was the inspiration for the name 'Knights of the SILVER HAND'. Tyr's Hand is named after the gauntlet.
I also do have a theory that I thought up while typing this out. Tirisfal Glades is sometimes said to be named after Tyr. My theory has to do it with its name, Tirisfal. What if it is a hint at the fact that Tyr is the Titan who fell! He fell down and taught the Azotha/Humans how to wield the Light. Tir-is-fal or Tyr is the Fallen.

Hazzard Hawk afew problems, tyr wasn't a titan, he was one of the titanic watchers in ulduar, and that wasn't a gauntlet- it was literally his replacement hand after his actual hand was eaten by a giant corrupt proto drake- galakrond

Nobbel. you are the one and only true reason i continue to play Wow. The lore you give has opend my eye to a new way of playing the game. And as sucth a new found love for the game as well. I have the unluck of being a Little bit behind the game time, as im still strukling with the Ledgendry clock. And yet have not done the SoO or Siege Of Orgrimmar. But yet that don't hinder me in still loving to play. As i grind thrugh the game i remember all the awesome lore vid i have seen of your's. and I suddenly find my self looding at Things in a new light so to speak lol. Thank you for you'r awesome Work. and please keep it coming.

There are different sources of magic on Azeroth. There is the Light (priests and paladins), there is the Arcane (mages and maybe druids) and Fel energies (warlocks). These can be put into various different categories.
Is there anything preventing someone to use more of these sources?
The Guardians were the only ones shown to be able to use all of them, mostly because they were given the powers. The players are balanced for a reason, but lorewise is it completely impossible for a mage for example to use the Light? Or does it simply require a very powerful person to use more types of magic?
***** If that were the case, could not Forsaken priests use Shadow Healing abilities often demonstrated both throughout the lore and withing the game mechanics? No personal torment there, although Death Knight tanks healed by Holy Light sources would still need to suck it up, I suppose.

Love your videos Nobbel, but on rare occasions I notice small thing missing from your explanations. For example the demi-god Cenarius is actually the child of Ysera and Malorne, as revealed in the war of the ancient’s trilogy. Just I minor detail, keep on with the awesome videos.
The books said Ysera only raised Cenarius. Malorne and Elune are his real parents.

Now that you have talked about the Light, you should talk about the opposite. I don't know what it is called (darkness?), the one that allows the reanimation of the dead in the form of undead.
It is always a curious topic in any fantasy. Most depict it as evil, but can it really be explained that shortsightedly?
First of all, it usually concerns the "soul", something even we are not sure really exists. If it does, then where does it go after the "owner" dies? Return to the gods? Reincarnante in another "owner"? Our universe have many beliefs about this, what about Azeroth? What happens to the souls there?
We know these souls can be harvested, like Frostmourne did, but they can also stay on our world on their own, like in the case of Light's Hope Chapel. Either way, these cannot be the "normal" destinations of souls, nobody collects souls for a hobby.
We also know, that these souls have their original personalities, like we saw in the case of Alexandros Mograine or the orc souls raised as the first Death Knights. Or in the case of the Forsaken.
When somebody reanimates a body, can they do it without having the souls, or can they only do it if the souls are in their reach? For example, can I walk into the tomb of Llane Wrynn, who died by an assassin long ago, and reanimate him as undead? Bolvar, for example, didn't die by Frostmounre, like Dranosh, yet the Lich King could reanimate him later. The valkyries reanimate us from a grave in Deathknell, probably years after our death.
The Forsaken does not seem to bother about their state, sure it is not ideal, but they make the best out of the situation. Their personalities might have changed, but after everybody hates on them for just the way they look, you can't really blame them for it.
There are also the "evil" undead. They are usually controlled by a master and have their original personality supressed. Sometimes they can break free of their master's control, like in the case of the Ebon Balde, but can others free them from the outside?.We do similar things in quests, so why aren't we doing it to the remains of the Scourge?
Then there are those undead that are "mindless", like zombies and ghouls. If they have a soul in them, it may be so weak that it fails to function on its own. If there isn't any, then how can they be reanimated? If a soul is not needed, then I could basically reanimate a sack of potato just as easily. And if I can reanimate dead without the soul, how will it know how to move its legs one after the other or how to grip a sword? Will I be the one controlling every move of it, completely?
Perhaps the abominations and fleshgolems can be mentioned here as well. They seem to be able to do thingson their own, yet they are made of more bodies and doesn't seem to have unique personalities.
So far there is nothing evil about reanimation. The only evil thing is when you try to control them, or when it is against the will of the "subject". Sure, they are uglier, but this way they can finish what they couldn't in life, and if there is no "higher power" whom they can anger with it, then why does it bother so much? With more knowledge about it, maybe other races, especially the Alliance, would look differently on the Forsaken.

I haven't read it all yet, but I just wanted to say bolvar never really died, he was touched by the flames of Alexstraza, so he survived and basically can't die.
He is undead, just a unique looking one.
Kefka Palazzo the gas that putress fired on the horde and alliance forces killed everything it touched, with the exception of dranosh saurfang as he was killed by arthas and his soul siphoned into frostmourne before the attack, bolvar fordragon and all others actually died at the wrathgate, but because of the red dragonflight he was basically turned into a bbq undead human, his flesh was seared and hardened, but he is essentially the same as any undead walking around underneath, and he can be killed, or at least, unmade, but in lore, only tirion fordring knows that bolvar didn't perish at the wrathgate, and later became the lich king, nobody else in the game universe knows what happened.

Does everyone think, they'll actually dive deep into it, or will Blizzard simply skip around it and just do the main plot.

Throughout Warcraft 3 they hyped so much, how beautiful and lush the planet was and outlands teased so much lore of the society. I hope they give it all justice :)

When tirion pleads the light to shatter his bonds may be a good example of how the light works in the Lore.
I would expect the Pandaren use the words of the Celestials and made their own religion of finding peace within yourself which gave them the ways of the monk and the light.
Thankfully the wow chronicles have cleared this up (somewhat). Shadow comes from the Void which is the opposite of the Light and the Void Lords are the beings that wield it, though they are too large to fit into the physical realm and they probably warped Sargeras into what he became. Possibly the Naaru are the Lights version of the Void Lords? Or they're just vessels of the light and Elune herself is one these "Light Lords"? Legion hints at that with her purifying the soul of Ysera.

I have read something about the trolls, one of them found the scarlet monastery during the 3rd war without any thing in it but books about the holy light (remember before the 3rd war paladins was trained there). A human priest found him and saw that the troll had read a lot about the light so he educated him the ways of the light. After that, the troll goes and learn the light to others trolls. The shadow priest trolls might be shadow hunters in the lore.
Would have been a good idea for you to explain the Cult of Forgotten Shadow to everyone, like what happens when they have a extreme belief in it.
For the Pandaren, they are speculated to be a forgotten race of "Children of Cenarius"-- Animalistic beings born beneath an Ancient, like Ursol for the Furbolg, Anvinia for the Harpies, etc.
The Pandaren religion is somewhat skewed in that parts of it come from Titanic lore, and parts from Nature.
From Titan lore, the Pandaren worship the August Celestials as Demigods, empowering pandaren with the power of the light. Monks wield chi, an alternative to the light. The titans that created the mogu also created Celestial energy from the light, which can be seen fueling Ulduar, the Tomb of the Emporer, etc.
The Celestials are a cross between the dragons and celestial energy (which explains Celestial dragons and their chromatic coloring).
Though they worship the Celestials and titanic powers, the Pandaren are children of Cenarius-- ancient animal-humanoids that peacefully lived in the land. As time went on, however, they grew to become intelligent, magic-wielding mortals. In the Sundering, the Pandaren had a prosperous empire to the far south along with other animal-humoid races, such as the Jinyu (relatives to Kal'uak, Murlocs, etc.), the Hozen, and the Yaungol (relatives to the Tauren and the Taunk'ula). In the sundering, the land was enveloped in the mist, and the continent separated from the single continent of Azeroth. Since then, the Pandaren have become an Agrarian society that love to eat, sleep, fight, and are hard workers.
Also, for other speculation on this animal-humanoid idea, Shen-zin Su had grown up to the point where he became an intelligent being, showing that he could be a decendant of Tortolla(?)
This was very interesting. I am glad to be a priest, but talk about a complex concept of the Light, also talk about a very telling thing to wield both Light and Shadow as a Priest be it holy or unholy.
FYI, you may know this but the quest where the fallen soldier is taken by the naaru to 'heaven' is because a game developers brother died of cancer and this quest was made out of respect to him
Possibly Anduin is harboring some darkness within himself, but naturally that would make his light less powerful. To embrace the darkness the way he does, he'd have to doubt his own light.
I have heared that how blizzard explaned the "shadow" or Shadow Priests is that if they can give you faith and hope, they(the Priests) can also take it away. That explanes the names of the spells for Shadow Priests, like Horror and Fear.

Nobbel87 I think the reason that the reason priests can link to shadow is because it's like a balance thing. You could say it's almost like where ever there is light there will always be shadow or darkness so if we want to say in game shadow spells can be used by other specs and vise versa but priests can only dwell on one side more than the other but they can still use some of the other. For example when you are shadow priest and you use a light spell it will break you from your shadow form, and when you use shadow on holy it wont be as damaging ( you could say its because its a different spec or whatever but that is what I think.)

The way the light works (based on faith, not accuracy) is kind of how religion in general works in the Monster Hunter book series. It's not about what religion you believe in, but how strong you believe in it, that can be used to hurt or subdue the undead.

There is one thing that I do not understand. If the scarlet crusade can wield the light despite their actions, then how come Arthas had his connection to the light severed after cleansing a town full of infected people?

Arguably, Pandaren soldiers are probably the best fit for the light. Shado Pan act without doubt and without fear. They act with pure conviction. So if they were to use the light, they would become very strong indeed.
and theres also that quest with the shado pan where you have to purify the land with totems and i guess their version of the light?
It may not be the light, it's uncertain to say for sure.

I always knew the races of Azeroth have different religions and when blizzard gave all priests the same abilities I thought it was only for gameplay purposes, but now it seems all priest have the same powers no matter what religion they have. This makes me believe that the Light doesn't have one, but many sources.

For shadow priests, i can only really think of one thing.
Troll's may have taken to shadows due to their witch-doctors; who likely dabbled in some darker arts of the light.
for the rest of the horde priests, or even the alliance in full, i dunno. Here's hoping WoD gives us some insight.

All priests in WoW use the same abilities regardless of race or faith because of gameplay reasons. There was a time when priests had unique racial abilities but Blizzard later removed it. Night Elf priests had starfall like Tyrande, Undead priests had a skill that deals shadow damage, trolls priests had hex, and so on. Therefore lore-wise we can assume that priests of different beliefs use very different abilities. Troll priests should be closer to shamans than priests who worship the Light, and Night Elf priests are more like druids that don't shapeshift. Shadow priests are probably not so common outside of the Forsaken and treated much like warlocks in normal society.
I was pretty sure Anduin didn't resurrect Varian, but rather casted Hymn of Hope. (Remember the constant description of singing and chanting.)
I think that the Naaru are the source of all light, not only for a few select worlds, but all worlds. However, I also think that they are the source of the shadow. My own personal theory is that the Naaru are all creatures of the Void, trapped by Titans inside a prison of light. They were given responsibility by the Titans to watch over those who were able to wield the light, but also to give power to those who understand the darkness. If the Void creature is alive inside them, then maybe they give the power of darkness to people so that they can weaken the creature until the day it must break free, so that it can be killed on that day. That's just my theory and it's probably stupid and already proven wrong but hey ho, it explains it to me :)
