The progress is slooow but steady. Next target is to end the issue with the marbles missing the funnels, until i have done that i dont think we can achieve a perfect score. I also noticed that the score doesnt get punished enough for failed marbles, when rounding the score to two decimal points you couldnt see a difference. So i should probably alter the score calculation function in the spreadsheet for that. Thank you everyone for following the build!
These are the larger remaining steps until full completion:
- hihat activation
- Cymbal Activation
- plywood module for vibraphone (same design as for drums)
- vibraphone marble droppers (same design as for drums)
- plywood module for bass (same design as for drums)
- bass marble droppers (same design as for drums but smaller, trickier)
+ a lot of smaller extras, but it seems within reach i think!
Nice
In every way i see function which doesn't end catastrophic like most things so i only see victory

Martin, you should get yourself a thermal camera to keep an eye on the machine during these long tests to see if any frictions are creeping in anywhere!

He works so hard, and never gives up, and laughs when he makes mistakes. He does all of this purely for his and our enjoyment. If he plays the original marble machine song on the new machine, he can republish it as the remastered version.
The most work put into a remaster of a song ever probably.
i would love that
I think it's more than fair to give it a remake status lol
And it needs to be a single long shot, to show off the reliability. The original video was edited together from lots of takes since the machine wasn't reliable enough to even make it through the song.

It would be interesting to see the MMX through a heat cam after a test
Just commenting so he sees this comment
Very much so. That could also highlight potential problems with it down the road. Martin should totally do this, even if only for its investigative value.
That’s a really neat idea
If a part has enough friction that it heats up significantly, you will definitely notice without using a thermal camera.
Could be interesting, it could spot some hidden flaws
15:50 track should be released, it sounds soooo good.
I have no idea how I ended up here but I think what I saw was a mad scientist, designer, engineer, constructor, musician doing something rather awesome. Most not wasted time I have had on YT for ages. Thanks for being amazing.
Martin,
one way you could improve the funnels would be to bracket them to the frame at the base of the funnel, instead of relying on the PMMA to support them. that way the funnel as a whole doesn't move during playing, while the spring back can still move. additionally, less than 10 marbles out of 50000 lost to missing the funnel is really good. keep in mind that is a non destructive failure that doesn't directly effect the song. The last two or three tests have had a 0% critical failure rate, meaning nothing was damaged that would prevent you putting a marble or two back in the machine and continuing to play a concert.
Also first time commenting, but i've been watching since the beginning.
Regards
This is a really good idea also I was here from the begging to!!!!
On the day of 1 million marbles he should do a live stream the entire time.
totally agree, I'd spend a whole day for that.
Should be great for us, but i he probably won't stay in front of the mmx during the entire test.
Absolutely great idea!
Dude, that would be absolutely epic!! The time could be filled with virtual visits from family, friends, and other musicians from around the world. Would also be a great time with back stories about the build. So many of us would be tuning in throughout the test run stream. And if there were any smart sponsors out there, they would be wise to get all over this event!!! ;-)
@@nako9790 With 38 channels 1.000.000 marbles only comes to around 26.315 pr channel, at the same bpm as this test it should only be a little more than half the time. I think he could do that.

The intersection of music and engineering has brought me to tears. Thank you.
You've probably been told this countless times, but those plywood threads are not going to hold up well over time, especially if you're taking the screws out repeatedly. You can get special inserts that you can press and/or glue in that will provide a metal thread that will last forever.
Fortunately you can just drill out the existing threaded hole with a hand drill and stick the insert in there, so it's not like you're making a mistake here. But keep those in mind for when these connections start getting sloppy.
I think this is kind of a prototyping stage. At some point he’ll have to add threaded inserts, but right now he’s just getting parts in there and seeing what works. I’m sure he’ll put it off though and it’ll come to bite him in the ass.
He's going to need to replace them eventually anyways because the wear the marbles cause by rubbing the pieces.

Its really great to see this amazing anlog machine in a wildly digital world😊👍
Looks like some of the graphite powder is transferring onto marbles and then to the drum. The marbles will slip on the drum surface and miss the funnel
The fact the fails all came towards the end seems to back this up.
I'm more inclined to believe that it's just trace oxidation residue compounded by the high traffic. If a teeny tiny speck of oxide comes off every tenth marble, just from these drop tests, you have 11000 teeny tiny oxide marks left over on a white surface. Which about checks out. The potential effect of graphite powder is negligible. We're not worrying about plywood sawdust or trace fibers from the felt or residue from loctite. These aren't laboratory conditions, there's gonna be unavoidable trace contamination from every other component of the machine.
Wasn't towards the end though, they were right in the middle.
