Motorhome Airbag Disaster

  • Short video which I forgot to upload at the beginning of 2022 before our Spain Trip. Our Motorhome on a Peugeot Boxer van (also applies to Fiat Ducato and Citroen Relay) showed the airbag warning sign just before our trip to Spain. Obviously something we wanted to get sorted pronto before our big trip. This is how I went about it. I am no expert in vehicle electrics or airbags, this is just a video showing how I sorted it. If you have a few technical skills, hopefully this will help but do consult an expert if you don't feel confident having a go yourself.
    The reprogramming/repair guy I used was: www.northernautotech.co.uk (07870 903552).

    Thanks for sharing,
Crashdata's name is mentioned on many motorhome forums for airbag module repairs, strange then that they didn't have the expertise to fix yours. Well done for not giving up and finding someone with the ability to reset the module. As you mentioned, good vehicle battery maintenance is key to preventing this issue.

Wow your Spain trip seemed ages ago now thanks for sharing this. Still waiting for Our CV40 and only just found out Fiat Only give a 2 year guarantee which can be extend for a year for another £900 which will require serious consideration. Cheers K.

Managed to book mine in at R&D. Quoted £144 diagnostics £15 for hire car- turned out to be a common earth fault because of swivelling seats, they rectified this and I got my van back in half a day

We have had our unit go twice now. Sent it off the first time to crash data and everything was fine. We took it out and replaced it ourselves. The unit went again i think less than 12 months later. Sent it back off to crash data. Touch wood everything is good.

You should keep your battery on a trickle charger , no need to take it out of the van . Just unplug the charger from the battery if you need to use the vehicle
I use a ctech charger and they maintain the battery. My battery is 10 years old and is still as good as new

Just bought a small solar panel to trickle charge when we're 'in dock' for a while. However, recently we've hardly been home so it's charging well. Thanks for advice though.

@@KissisAdventures With the solar charger, do you connect it directly to the battery? I ask because I looked at one that plugged into the cigarette lighter socket, but couldn’t see how it worked if the ignition was off when the vehicle is stored.

Hi, my unit went this year and the same as yours only 5 years old. I used crash data with no success. I ended up buying a new unit from Peugeot and had it fitted by my local auto electrician so far so good. My battery has been reported to be 80 percent so will be returning to my auto electrician to replace that soon (ready for winter)

Think I might have my vehicle battery checked. Thanks for tip. Thanks for watching too. :)

We don't use the van much over winter now but as I store at home I try and take it out for a run every 4 weeks. Because it is now in for its hab service and MOT I left it a bit longer and got the warning light. Could it be the battery, well it started immediately without hesitation which sort of suggests that might not be a problem. (I have a solar panel, I plug into the mains for a few hours a day and I have a Battery Master fitted so there shouldn't be a problem with charging?) As its now with the dealer I have no idea what they can do and how economic any remedy will be, but sitting here on tender hooks!!! Why is it that these units are either so sensitive or not made well enough to seemingly need so much attention. You also have to question how a small electrical unit can cost nearly £1000?

Hi thanks for the informative video. I have the same issue following Decembers(2022) constant sub zero temperatures taking it's toll I guess. The problem I have is, getting somebody to respond. Marquis, where I bought it from new, told me they haven't the diagnostics to fix it. The garage they use for servicing and MOT couldn't help either. I have left voicemail at 2No Robins & Day dealerships in the N West, none have had the curtesy to reply. I have messaged Crash Data and they are currently closed. Seeing as this is an MOT failure, surely they must have the technology to fix this, seems to me they are hiding. My last resort will be to turn up on their forecourt asking to speak with their service manager.

Common problem and not one that is fixed first time unfortunately. Mine and others have had the same issue two or three times at around £90 every reset.

I had this happen to me today. I think all these modules are made faulty and should be replaced through recall as they are a safety item. The company that makes them TRW are having to settle multiple lawsuits as there airbag modules have failed at critical times.Defective Airbag Control Unit Lawsuit Filed
A class action lawsuit has been filed against TRW and its parent company (ZF), Honda, and Toyoto for equipping vehicles with allegedly defective airbag control units. The complaint says that TRW’s control units don’t have sufficient protection against electrical overstress, which can lead the units to fail during a crash. The lawsuit says that TRW control unit failures are implicated in six known injuries and four deaths.

Thanks for sharing, I have the same issue with my Accordo 120. Did you leave the battery disconnected from the vehicle whilst you sent the ECU away?

  • @lilciga8921
    @lilciga8921 6 месяцев назад

if you change the battery in time, and dont leave it running to the ground, then you shouldn't have the issue, but if it seems a bit steep for a £60 charge for a mechanic coming to you to diagnose it, then the cost of battery is way to much for you,

What is the cause of this problem, I have a fiat ducato 2020 cargo and it has an airbag light and I am wondering if the problem will be solved if I replace the module or if it has to be programmed... the error cannot be deleted with diagnostics? thanks
