    Today on Game History Secrets we talk about the cancelled Batman game that became Shadow of Mordor. The project was worked on by Monolith Productions, and was intended to be based in the world of Christopher Nolan's Batman. Although cancelled, concepts from the game found there way into Shadow of Mordor, and Batman was even a placeholder main character during the game's development.

      I mean, I personally don't play as elves or dwarfs because I like to approach fantasy settings with the context we're all familiar with of being humans and experiencing/interacting with fantastical races from the point of view as the outsider. But I would never think to deny anyone else that option, that's stupid.

      When Shadow of Mordor was introduced, Monolith was accused by former Ubisoft employee Charles Randall of using assets (such as the protagonist-animation code) from Assassin's Creed 2. Monolith responded that all their project's assets were developed from scratch, they had confidence in their originality, and the game was based upon the Nemesis system.

    • @icantthinkofaname1009
      @icantthinkofaname1009 3 года назад +3

      That's exactly what I thought. Its funny that they claim the combat for Shadow of Mordor evolved from their Nolan Batman prototype, because it implies that their Nolan Batman game basically had the same combat as the Arkham series. Things probably worked out for the best with them translating that to a different IP.

      Nah. I’m more skeptical on it.
      Firstly, Gameloft made a tie in game on the TDKR with the open world and the like on iOS. It didn’t seem all that impressive
      Secondly, Verticality is something that would have been tough for 7th gen to implement and make special. Spider-Man games have been trying for years and aside from Web of Shadows, haven’t made much effort on that front. Rocksteady were able to avoid that problem through their locations.
      Thirdly, Nolan is someone who demands realism. His world and approach would have limited Monolith compared to what Rocksteady could do by taking from comics.

    I would not be surprised if Monolith ends up making a DC game in the next gen. They've done open world, Batman-esque stuff here and fantasy based stuff with Middle-Earth - if you're WB and you're setting up your DC Gaming Universe (Superman or Justice League? at Rocksteady, Suicide Squad? at WB Montreal), it seems like Monolith would be a great fit for a third studio to work on a DC property - an open world Wonder Woman game. Have 'em go from Tolkien fantasy to Greek myths, Middle-Earth to Themyscira; you're still a badass warrior skilled with all sorts of swords, shields and bows & arrows, etc. fighting monsters and other warriors in a magical world... just add superpowers!
    The only thing wrong with this pitch for "Apollo" was that it was Batman and that was redundant since Rocksteady had him on lock. Give _WW her first video game,_ and have Monolith make it, WB. Unless there's gonna be a Middle-Earth 3, of course, but considering Amazon has the LotR license now and Shadow of War didn't do super great (thanks a lot, microtransactions), it's easy to see Monolith end up making a AAA DC game next. And dammit, we need to see a new DC game already - WB Montreal and Rocksteady have been skipping too many E3's!
    This was a killer story. Thanks for the excellent media, interviews and research as usual, Liam :)

    I remember seeing test footage for a legacy of kane game that was damn close to shadows of mordor.
    The protagonist was a human bitten by a vampire and something went wrong so the vampires soul ends up inside the human and you can traverse between the human world and the soul world and unlock vampiric abilities as you go..
    I always did wonder if this was a scrapped game that went onto be reused in shadows of mordor

    I have, in the past, said I wanted the nemesis system for other games, batman was by far on the top of the list. Since the arkham series is resting for a few more years, could we possibly get that now? Call it like batman: Nemesis, have the "clans" be different villains of batman's rogue's gallery, keep the combat similar, maybe have coop with robin... or catwoman. just a thought, unfortunately.

    I mean, I'm glad we eventually got the game we did, but fuck WB going, "The main characters have to be human". That gets really boring after playing it in every other game.
    Good to know that the only reason there's so much Torvin in both games is the devs were missing their dwarf protagonist though.

    Imagine how crazy Shadow of Mordor would have been if you played Batman instead of Talion, and Joker took the place of the Celery Bimbo...
    Come to think of it, the Nemesis system would work VERY well for a superhero game. It would be pretty similar to "Mankind Has Yet To Recognize My Brilliance".

    • @GmodPlusWoW
      @GmodPlusWoW 5 лет назад

      @@TheDrQuake It would admittedly be very fitting for a game that's basically a season of the 60's Batman show. After all, Batman doesn't usually cut people's heads off or dominate them with mind control powers, so if anything a villain in "Mankind Has Yet To Recognize My Brilliance" would be VERY likely to run and fight another day. And even if you lock them away in jail or Arkham Asylum, they'll probably get busted out after enough time has passed.
