- While Ed Bolian was selling cars at Motorcars of Georgia/Lamborghini Atlanta he had a lot of crazy things happen. During this car deal, as Ed was selling a Nissan GT-R, the customer wanted to trade a Mercedes C63 AMG. His manager took it for a test drive and disaster struck.

Ed: Our dealership wasn't like that...
Ed's grin: Thats exactly what we would do
I can write this dealer off my list of "completely honest and forthcoming venues for my next car".
Ayyy hello GTOger

that's literally all dealers tho.
Having sold cars for a few years, one of the things I tell my friends and family is: When you go to a dealer to buy a car with a trade, give the salesman your EXTRA KEY. That way if you want to leave before you buy, you aren't stuck without your car or house keys. Dealers will "lose" your keys and keep you hostage until you buy. This happened to my sister, and she told the salesman, "That's fine, you have my address. Mail them to my house. Goodbye!" First time I ever saw a sales manager SPRINT after a customer.
I don't even recommend that, because you'll end up never getting your extra key back (which can sometimes cost hundreds of dollars)
@@jire9831 spoken like a dealer.

It wouldnt Matter too much because then the dealership would be at a loss and not you. You would lose some leverage but other than that you wouldnt be "out" any money

That's areally dishonest sales practice...gonna definitely be watching out for this kind of BS next time I buy.
Yeah no shit. That dealer should catch a lawsuit
Man, if that customer ever found out he'd never buy another car there. That's deeply dishonest. Worse than lying outright.

to be fair the job is just standing around on a showroom floor talking to people and filing paperwork, if you've got the charisma it can be a very easy/rewarding job
Lots of potential but no momentum. Good months were usually followed by tougher ones. It is the nature of the beast but it is a tough grind over time.
Ed Bolian Hey Ed. I am also a salesman. I’ve actually learned a lot about personality just by studying your mannerisms in your videos and I’ve had great success from it! If you read this would you be able to do a video on sales tips?
So you do, or don't want the Nissan GT-R?
When you buy a NEW GT-R, it spells out specifically in the sales contract that ONLY Nissan GT-R certified techs are allowed to work on the car, and not every dealershit has one on staff. So for that reason alone, among many others, I would never buy a GT-R.
If I have an issue with a shady/douchey tech, I'm not driving 500 miles to the next closest dealershit with a GT-R certified tech.
For that same reason, I will never buy an exotic.
Don't need the massive headache of having to placate/pacify the one dealershit near my city in order to get the privilege of being screwed by the service dept.
There are far easier ways to get a performance fix. The shitvette lays waste to GT-R's on a track

Gus Kipper I used to sell GTR for Nissan, it is muchhhh more difficult. Once had a gtr come off the truck as I was pulling in for work, and the customer had BEATEN me to work, and had SHOWROOM mirrors he was sliding up under it as I was pulling in.... boy was he pissed it was not ME pulling it off the truck, for some reason. Ed is such a good storyteller. He could make anything sound good.
Too bad he couldn't have seen it. Don't care how you spin it, the idiot sales manager didn't want to have to take a hit for his carelessness. If I found out about someone trying to be that sneaky even after the fact, they'd never get my business again and I'd make sure as many people as possible knew about it. That's about as bad as the finance manager trying to tack on a $3,000 extended warranty to the last car I was buying without even asking me if I wanted it, essentially bumping my payments up another $30 or so a month. I may not have been buying a supercar, but that little move cost that dealership that I had previously purchased 5 other cars from my business, and the salesman who I had bought 3 of those 5 cars from a $42,000 sale
I was thinking the same thing. He pressured the customer into the sale, rather than admitting to a mistake. It would have been better to say "There was an accident. Here's what we can do to make it right."
Even just admitting it, and offering the full trade-in based on no damage, or offering the repairs is honest. He would have likely accepted the trade-in, without being shady about it.
Dude how did you missed the fact that the customer wanted to buy this car and after he did he was very happy.
" He pressured the customer into the sale" funfact he is a salesman, that is literally his job.
I once went to a shoeshop and wanted to buy a pair of sneakers. I chose a pair even thought they didn't fit perfect but still good enough but the saleswomen do not wanted to sell me the sneakers even after I said I might never come back. Guess what, I will never ever again go there to buy shoes bc if I go shopping I actually want buy the stuff I need.

i had this happen to me on a smaller scale. i was looking to trade in for a new ride at a major new car dealership. i came ready to buy, so a sales manager took my car out for a test drive to determine the trade in value, while the salesperson who i was dealing with was sales pitching me hard as i waited for my car to come back. finally the manager did come back... and promptly crashed it into the parking curb right in front of the showroom, wrecking my car. this drew a large crowd from both staff and customers alike, except for the salesperson, who literally vanished into thin air. there was no hiding the damage because it happened right in front of me. i got an apology from the manager, who then promptly gave me a poorer trade in offer than another dealership had given me earlier. this manager wouldn't deal, so i ended up taking them up on their offer to fix my car on their own dime. it took them two tries over a span of one month to fix it, and by then the other dealership had sold the car i wanted... FML.
What kinda car and what damage? Did he kill the wheels only or did the bumper get hit or what?
wrx. front bumper and undercarriage.
They knew you would never be able to get a good trade-in offer on an accident damaged car, so they lowballed you. Grade A Scumbags.
the bodyshop they used is known for good work so i had no issue with that. the problem was i let the dealer do the suspension repairs and it took them two attempts to get it right. now in hindsight i should have taken it to the dealer i go to for service and sent them the bill. the sales manager gave me his own personal company demo to drive for the month. i was just trying to make the most of a bad situation at the time.
@@madfiat8932 They probably fixed it in their shop all expenses paid from dealership cas, 9/10 times no insource claim no reported accident/ damage
I’m sorry but if that was me and I found out my car was crashed but they stalled to push the deal I would be pissed. You guys made a mistake own up to it and give me one hell of a deal.

Ed, I sold a car to a nice couple, signed and delivered them. Went through the car in great detail. Said goodbye and went to my office. 3 minutes later I heard a crunch. My boss had backed a suburban (their trade-in) into the car they just bought as it was parked behind it. When he did so he was in a hurry as we we closing soon and punched the gas. $7k in damage to the trade, and $15k in damage to the new car. Made for a late Saturday.
Getting my daily VINwiki before classes. Thanks for another upload guys!
Loving the Video, as always!
Could you maybe do a Video about the general experience of being a car salesman? (Not necessarily on the VinWiki channel, maybe Ed's private channel?) You've had quite the selection of salesman on the channel. I've been thinking about going down that route for quite some time.
Don't know how I found this youtube channel, but now I'm 3 hours deep in videos and stories. Keep them coming!
The keys on the roof thing is real! A customer and salesperson got in to an argument, the salesman grabbed the keys and chucked them on to the roof of the dealership. The dealership was probably about three stories tall. Took about an hour to locate a really big ladder and have someone climb up there to get the keys.
My reaction if it was my car would have been “OK, now I’m gonna stand here and beat your ass until those keys are back in my hand.”
I was definitely on the edge of my seat for this one!
Carter Harris you need to sit back further so you don't fall
Even better than i expected😂 you held your word
What an awesome story! You really remember the details and present them nicely! Well done.
Man, it seems Austin and Ed have the craziest GT-R sales stories I've heard! Great storytelling, as always.
Wow look at that white Ferrari 550!? Talk about a unicorn. Great video per usual!
I have tried to buy it many times.
I enjoy watching this channel. Of all the channels I watch you are actually very intelligent and well spoken.
Im probably a couple of days into this guys channel but boy ohhh boy do I enjoy this guy's amusing style of storytelling, specifically when he describes his visions of the events while he sits down with the customer at his desk.
Great..taking advantage of a repeat customer to help fund a million dollar profit dealership..Good job
It takes a certain kind of person to be a car dealer you have to be a born lier
I gotta disagree the guy would have made the trade either way. He got what was fair the dealership would have lost on what either wise would have been a fair trade if they had told him.
It's just smart business don't be so soft.
@@MoooseBlood if it was a proper trade, as it would have to be, as to not alert the owner, than the dealership likely *lost* money, by making sure the guy didn't know. I mean, they took a totaled C63 in trade, as opposed to a "running and driving" one...
@@jordaneggerman4734 Ignoring of course that trade in value is not 100% value of vehicle but insurance money sure is! Him signing without knowing they totalled his car meant the damage was a non factor.
Had he signed after he was aware, he could have easily gotten more for the trade in via threat of insurance claim.
@@Luckingsworth Exactly this was extremely shady and could have sued over the information of his car being wrecked being kept from him.
Ed does such a good job at making this story sound like it was no sweat to him. I’m sure he must have been so damn nervous trying to convince the customer to trade.
When I saw the title I was thinking “ok its gonna be like a fender bender” then ed says “he t boned a bmw” and I was like oh no
I have a similar story. I took my car in for service about 20 years ago. Long story short, they took it out to test the repair and never came back. They had to use the jaws of life to get the driver out. I saw the ambulance go down the street just like Ed mentioned and wondered where my car was. My car was totaled. Interesting talking to the insurance company. They wanted me to describe the accident - I told them I had no idea, I wasn’t there. The dealer loaned me a car to get home. I talked with them about buying a new car of course, but they knew I had to buy a car. I ended up going to a different dealer.
I wish all car salesman are as honest and likeable as him
Ed needs to start doing audiobooks! :)
Ed explaining the "old school tricks" is why I always take 2 keys with me.. I give them the spare that doesn't have any extra keys or anything on it.. and if they "lose" it, I can use my normal keys and leave.. not before getting it in writing that they will return my key or be paying for the replacement :)
How was this not one of the first stories you gave us? Keep them coming!
I love how he quickly explained financing a vehicle. Makes me upset when people say they will buy it all in cash.
As he's telling this story, I'm imagining scenes from movies where the customer has his back turned away from the action and the salesman is facing the action...traffic backing up, ambulance drives by. Customer is clueless.
But was he a shrewd negotiator?
Great story .. after being a regular visitor for a while, I subscribed today. Nicely done.

You tend not to notice the gradual upscaling of quality overtime. However, I've just come from videos posted by Vinwiki in mid 2020 to this video now, and the audio quality is drastically superior in the mare recent videos. Good on Vinwiki for upgrading their recording equipment. I'm convinced that they could have left it alone, and I certainly would have been none the wiser.
You are a master storyteller Ed. Thanks for the videos!
This guy needs his own podcast. You're an expert in a niche and def have the voice for it
Lol, so if you were not on time, the owner actually could sue the dealership and get more for the car than worth.
But now like: "Oh great, sign here please. By the way, the manager crashed your car 15 mins. ago"
Was thinking the same thing. A real shady way to operate a dealership. I also like the fact that when he talked about "losing keys" to keep a guy on the show floor longer that they don't do that cause it's "not right". Talk about hypocritical.
Yeah, that's a shitty way to treat a long time customer. If it had happened to me, I would no longer do business with them since they are clearly morally compromised.
bullshit.it was an accident.they have insurance.what was he going to sue him for? he has 72 hours to change his mind and cancel the deal.

In early morning on a Saturday i saw a sales guy pull the whole "we cant find your keys thing" on my Dad once". Forgetting my Dad still had the keys to the car they just drove, "well I guess I'll go grocery shopping and do the weekend trips in this car while you guys figure that out." Sales guy's eyes get real big, "uh sir we are going to need..." "you get em back when you find my car keys. Consider it an extended test drive."

Another great video, Ed. I love it. Did the guy ever find out that his AMG was totaled? Or did Lamborghini of Atlanta find a way to keep that hush hush and give him what he needed out of his car without his knowledge? I know the trunk wouldn't open but I'm curious to see his reaction if or when he found out it was hit. Good story, Ed. Love this channel.
Not surprised about all of the wrecks there. That stretch of Roswell Road is terrible!
"We don't do these typical scummy car salesman tactics but we do try to sell a car without the customer knowing we crashed his trade in"
I Enjoy learning from these video's... keep up the great job!
I sold exotic cars here in Austin for just over 10 years until 2013 and damn if I could I'd love to go back in time and spend a few days in sales at Motorcars of Georgia just to experience some of the incredible stories Ed graces our ears with!!!
These clowns have crashed 3 customer cars in recent memory? Then he bullshits, excuse me lies to, the repeat customer? This is why people rightfully hate car salesmen. Thanks for sharing.
Please do more of these "behind the scenes of the car business" videos. I learn a lot from them.
Gus Kipper you wanna learn how to be a crooked salesperson and take advantage of people? Cool!
There's nothing here an ethical salesperson wants to learn.
He needs his own car dealership.
I don't think I want all of those headaches.
I think allot of folks would love to buy a car from your dealership.
Until their AMG's keep crashing ...
Great story. An administrative law judge took his new Toyota into a local dealership for the initial 500 mile servicing. The mechanic crashed the car and he wasn't told. Much later, the dealership comes in and tells him that he brought in a damaged car. After the judge (who had the nicest tattoos on his arms ) finished threatening to drive the car through the showroom window, they mollified him.
Any day with an Ed story has to be a good day. Pretty sure if Larry Kosilla of Ammo NYC were to tell a story here it would be equally entertaining with his OCD about his regimental detailing of fine cars.
Another day, another Ed story
life cant get better than this
Really good story! Would love for the editor to conti he adding in the extra information about the car language like done in previous videos!
Personally, I didn't like the pop-ups, I find it very distracting. Like with Impratical Jokers on TruTV, you find yourself reading them and can't pay attention to the show.
I agree with FastGunner
FastGunner 2040 I agree with you on it being a distraction. However I would rather pause the video every minute to read than to watch the whole video and be lost.
I feel that maybe it shouldn't be as frequent and should be off to the side and smaller. So it'll be less of a distraction, and quite honestly most people don't want to pause the video every minute. I understand about being lost, but it seemed that a lot of information didn't have to be put up in text and is already known.
Sleazy, pure and simple.
Everyone read this!
Find Ed’s personal email and talk with him, I made a great friend in him a few years back, back when the channel was growing legs and he actually sent me a bunch of Vin Wiki stickers and I passed them out at a slammedEnuff event and I still hear about these videos around local car events till this day! Just don’t feel dumb if you don’t comprehend half the big words he uses.
How much different this would have gone if the guy had found out about it or decided he didn't want the GTR...
Difficult to predict. If he had decided to back out of the deal, we would have had to get him made whole on his C63 and we probably would have been out looking for another GT-R a few weeks later. If he had wanted to keep the deal together, we were probably sufficiently motivated for the claim to be against a car that we owned that we would have probably given him a little more on the trade.
SuperiorRedneck Then the dealership scene from "national lampoon vacation" comes true
I usually love all your stories Ed but this one was just too grimy. I found it really lucrative that you compelled the customer to trade his (wrecked) AMG unknowingly.
I have no idea why but I am hooked on this channel
Take this story as a warning that sales people will use your own ignorance and misinformation against you for their own benefit! All with a charismatic grin
I love when Ed tells a story :D
