Having sold cars for a few years, one of the things I tell my friends and family is: When you go to a dealer to buy a car with a trade, give the salesman your EXTRA KEY. That way if you want to leave before you buy, you aren't stuck without your car or house keys. Dealers will "lose" your keys and keep you hostage until you buy. This happened to my sister, and she told the salesman, "That's fine, you have my address. Mail them to my house. Goodbye!" First time I ever saw a sales manager SPRINT after a customer.
Well if I don't have my keys im going to perceive that as you do not want to give me my car back so yal have 10 minutes and after that im marking my car as stolen.
It wouldnt Matter too much because then the dealership would be at a loss and not you. You would lose some leverage but other than that you wouldnt be "out" any money

Too bad he couldn't have seen it. Don't care how you spin it, the idiot sales manager didn't want to have to take a hit for his carelessness. If I found out about someone trying to be that sneaky even after the fact, they'd never get my business again and I'd make sure as many people as possible knew about it. That's about as bad as the finance manager trying to tack on a $3,000 extended warranty to the last car I was buying without even asking me if I wanted it, essentially bumping my payments up another $30 or so a month. I may not have been buying a supercar, but that little move cost that dealership that I had previously purchased 5 other cars from my business, and the salesman who I had bought 3 of those 5 cars from a $42,000 sale
I was thinking the same thing. He pressured the customer into the sale, rather than admitting to a mistake. It would have been better to say "There was an accident. Ed, I sold a car to a nice couple, signed and delivered them. Went through the car in great detail. Said goodbye and went to my office. 3 minutes later I heard a crunch. My boss had backed a suburban (their trade-in) into the car they just bought as it was parked behind it. When he did so he was in a hurry as we we closing soon and punched the gas. $7k in damage to the trade, and $15k in damage to the new car. Made for a late Saturday.

God bless you and your family! And thank you for unintentionally making me richer!
I have a similar story. I took my car in for service about 20 years ago. Long story short, they took it out to test the repair and never came back. They had to use the jaws of life to get the driver out. I saw the ambulance go down the street just like Ed mentioned and wondered where my car was. My car was totaled. Interesting talking to the insurance company. They wanted me to describe the accident - I told them I had no idea, I wasn’t there. The dealer loaned me a car to get home. I talked with them about buying a new car of course, but they knew I had to buy a car. I ended up going to a different dealer.
I liked the part where you said you werent a shady dealer but then proceed to tell a story about lying to a customer about his car only until he said he’d buy the GTR from you. All on the up and up 😂
Loving the Video, as always! Could you maybe do a Video about the general experience of being a car salesman? (Not necessarily on the VinWiki channel, maybe Ed's private channel?) You've had quite the selection of salesman on the channel. I've been thinking about going down that route for quite some time.
The keys on the roof thing is real! A customer and salesperson got in to an argument, the salesman grabbed the keys and chucked them on to the roof of the dealership. The dealership was probably about three stories tall. Took about an hour to locate a really big ladder and have someone climb up there to get the keys.
You tend not to notice the gradual upscaling of quality overtime. However, I've just come from videos posted by Vinwiki in mid 2020 to this video now, and the audio quality is drastically superior in the mare recent videos. Good on Vinwiki for upgrading their recording equipment. I'm convinced that they could have left it alone, and I certainly would have been none the wiser.
Ed does such a good job at making this story sound like it was no sweat to him. I’m sure he must have been so damn nervous trying to convince the customer to trade.
I'm glad I found this channel, I like listening to these stories. Especially the ones by the shrewd negotiator. You should make some of those shirts and hoodies with 'Shrewd Negotiator' on them.
Great story....should be a short film on Netflix....add a ghost from a previous accident causing the present accidents and I’ll give that a thumbs up as well ....👍
In early morning on a Saturday i saw a sales guy pull the whole "we cant find your keys thing" on my Dad once". Forgetting my Dad still had the keys to the car they just drove, "well I guess I'll go grocery shopping and do the weekend trips in this car while you guys figure that out." Sales guy's eyes get real big, "uh sir we are going to need..." "you get em back when you find my car keys. Consider it an extended test drive." Also watching these vinwiki stories has made me much more paranoid about buying cars. Neat.
I sold exotic cars here in Austin for just over 10 years until 2013 and damn if I could I'd love to go back in time and spend a few days in sales at Motorcars of Georgia just to experience some of the incredible stories Ed graces our ears with!!!
Ed explaining the "old school tricks" is why I always take 2 keys with me.. I give them the spare that doesn't have any extra keys or anything on it.. and if they "lose" it, I can use my normal keys and leave.. not before getting it in writing that they will return my key or be paying for the replacement :)
Oh no damn manager crushed the car so basically the customer had the upper hand on any car he wanted without him knowing his was in complete distress lol. Anybody can get the deal done fast without customer know its Ed.

While short of winning the lottery I doubt I will ever be well-heeled enough to buy a exotic super car. Having once sold cars and being an student of humanity I do enjoy your story telling.
Lol, so if you were not on time, the owner actually could sue the dealership and get more for the car than worth. But now like: "Oh great, sign here please. By the way, the manager crashed your car 15 mins. ago"
Was thinking the same thing. A real shady way to operate a dealership. I also like the fact that when he talked about "losing keys" to keep a guy on the show floor longer that they don't do that cause it's "not right". Talk about hypocritical.
Yeah, that's a shitty way to treat a long time customer. If it had happened to me, I would no longer do business with them since they are clearly morally compromised.
@Herando Sanqui if you wreck my car and give me the money you make, sure I am happy to cooperate with you. I don't know how you will get a profit but thats not my problem.

As he's telling this story, I'm imagining scenes from movies where the customer has his back turned away from the action and the salesman is facing the action...traffic backing up, ambulance drives by. Customer is clueless.
What a total bunch of scumbags. We wrecked your car, we know it, we aren't going to tell you, but we will turn this to our advantage. To a repeat customer that buys both sports cars and daily drivers from them!
This dude is precisely the reason that car dealers have the reputation they do. He makes a humorous anecdote out of hustling the customer into a sale, then concealing from him what they've done to his car, just to protect their several grand profit. Sleazebags !
Take this story as a warning that sales people will use your own ignorance and misinformation against you for their own benefit! All with a charismatic grin
Everyone read this! Find Ed’s personal email and talk with him, I made a great friend in him a few years back, back when the channel was growing legs and he actually sent me a bunch of Vin Wiki stickers and I passed them out at a slammedEnuff event and I still hear about these videos around local car events till this day! Just don’t feel dumb if you don’t comprehend half the big words he uses.
Personally, I didn't like the pop-ups, I find it very distracting. Like with Impratical Jokers on TruTV, you find yourself reading them and can't pay attention to the show.
FastGunner 2040 I agree with you on it being a distraction. However I would rather pause the video every minute to read than to watch the whole video and be lost.
I feel that maybe it shouldn't be as frequent and should be off to the side and smaller. So it'll be less of a distraction, and quite honestly most people don't want to pause the video every minute. I understand about being lost, but it seemed that a lot of information didn't have to be put up in text and is already known.
I don't get how all these people are say YAY for the deal. They basically messed over the customer by taking away his leverage. I see it as slimy as heck. U crash my car sell me a car I'm not really sold on then you take away my leverage to get a much better deal because you crashed my car. How is this a good deal for the customer...??
Well, I'd say the caveat is that the customer doesn't have to deal with a totaled, nearly-out-of-warranty AMG, and instead has a shiny new GTR. Ed may have gotten a little more money out of the guy, and been a little shady in doing so, but that little bit of money doesn't cover the absolute loss of that AMG. So, even though he was lied to, the customer came out a bit ahead in this deal.
Yeah all those people “yeah, it’s just business” would react a lot different if the AMG was their business. Hate that it wasn’t me that got effed over so eff it mentality.
Why wouldn't he? How do you know he wouldn't? His Mercedes Benz was scrap metal at the time. The Manager ofc didn't do this on purpose and there is nothing wrong with testdriving the car.
I can write this dealer off my list of "completely honest and forthcoming venues for my next car".

Too bad he's not there anymore. It would have been nice to pop in there in the morning for a Good espresso on the way to the next corp meeting in May. I seem to remember a couple of these guys were originally from Chicago, Far North Side if I remember correctly. Why the move to Atlanta other than the warmer climate?
DjJtown exotic cars don't work great in cold weather
Roger Rarebit everyone knows something/excels at something more than others. Some can make a great cup of coffee, some can build and tear down their own cars. It's beautiful to be alive!
I enjoy watching this channel. Of all the channels I watch you are actually very intelligent and well spoken.
Great..taking advantage of a repeat customer to help fund a million dollar profit dealership..Good job
It takes a certain kind of person to be a car dealer you have to be a born lier
I gotta disagree the guy would have made the trade either way. He got what was fair the dealership would have lost on what either wise would have been a fair trade if they had told him.
It's just smart business don't be so soft.
@@MoooseBlood if it was a proper trade, as it would have to be, as to not alert the owner, than the dealership likely *lost* money, by making sure the guy didn't know. I mean, they took a totaled C63 in trade, as opposed to a "running and driving" one...
@@jordaneggerman4734 Ignoring of course that trade in value is not 100% value of vehicle but insurance money sure is! Him signing without knowing they totalled his car meant the damage was a non factor.
Had he signed after he was aware, he could have easily gotten more for the trade in via threat of insurance claim.
@@Luckingsworth Exactly this was extremely shady and could have sued over the information of his car being wrecked being kept from him.
Pretty dishonest, scummy behavior. And this is supposed to be one of the HONEST guys in the business?!
Getting my daily VINwiki before classes. Thanks for another upload guys!
What an awesome story! You really remember the details and present them nicely! Well done.
Hey Ed if you’re reading this I want to just let you know something. I have been subbed since 4K subs and have showed all the car enthusiasts I know your Channel and they also obsessed. But the point is that I do sales and watching you had most definitely made me better salesman. Just studying the way you speak and how you are very personable. I actually mimic your tone and it had been working amazing for me the past 6 months. I just want to thank you for the amazing story’s and being a very influential role model to me. God bless you and your family! And thank you for unintentionally making me richer!
A VINwiki video that includes Ed, a great story, and a mentioning of Bitcoin. My life is complete.
This guys voice is.........
Sleazy, pure and simple.
Man, it seems Austin and Ed have the craziest GT-R sales stories I've heard! Great storytelling, as always.
How was this not one of the first stories you gave us? Keep them coming!
Even better than i expected😂 you held your word
7:15 that’s definitely not professional u tear a car up u pay for it not screw him into buying one
I was definitely on the edge of my seat for this one!
Carter Harris you need to sit back further so you don't fall
I love how he quickly explained financing a vehicle. Makes me upset when people say they will buy it all in cash.
The keys on the roof thing is real! A customer and salesperson got in to an argument, the salesman grabbed the keys and chucked them on to the roof of the dealership. The dealership was probably about three stories tall. Took about an hour to locate a really big ladder and have someone climb up there to get the keys.
My reaction if it was my car would have been “OK, now I’m gonna stand here and beat your ass until those keys are back in my hand.”
Seemed like a semi honest guy right up untill the 7 mins mark
I wish all car salesman are as honest and likeable as him
Ed does such a good job at making this story sound like it was no sweat to him. I’m sure he must have been so damn nervous trying to convince the customer to trade.
Great story .. after being a regular visitor for a while, I subscribed today. Nicely done.
Within the first 10 seconds I was like “YES!!! Another ED video!!!!” Love the stories man. Not only great stories but from a fantastic story teller.
I'm glad I found this channel, I like listening to these stories. Especially the ones by the shrewd negotiator.
You should make some of those shirts and hoodies with 'Shrewd Negotiator' on them.
We will add them to the teespring products but for now you can go to: bonfire.com/vinwiki-shrewd-negotiator
literally wait for a Ed story all week
Man u pass on good info, while telling your passed experiences. Good stuff...
So you guys hustled him more because your company messed up. Awesome. Cliche carsalesmen.
Great story....should be a short film on Netflix....add a ghost from a previous accident causing the present accidents and I’ll give that a thumbs up as well ....👍
This is the dude you want telling stories when cracking a cold one with the boys
Consider it an extended test drive."
Also watching these vinwiki stories has made me much more paranoid about buying cars. Neat.
Wow look at that white Ferrari 550!? Talk about a unicorn. Great video per usual!
I have tried to buy it many times.
that dealership insurance high key dropped them after those accidents 🤣
Schools’ closed and a new VINwiki video is out, pure bliss.
Great speaker, great story. Excellent video!
Ed needs to start doing audiobooks! :)
Oh no damn manager crushed the car so basically the customer had the upper hand on any car he wanted without him knowing his was in complete distress lol. Anybody can get the deal done fast without customer know its Ed.
This guy needs his own podcast. You're an expert in a niche and def have the voice for it
Not gonna lie ed, when it was wrecked it was still his car you should have told him. That was kind of sleezy man
I love this channel! Ed Bolian is such a gifted story teller! I could listen to this guy talk all day!
Not surprised about all of the wrecks there. That stretch of Roswell Road is terrible!
I really enjoy your channel. You are a masterful and eloquent story teller. Clearly someone I would enjoy drinking some beers with. Nothing like learning something AND drinking a beer with cool peoples
If it had happened to me, I would no longer do business with them since they are clearly morally compromised.
bullshit.it was an accident.they have insurance.what was he going to sue him for? he has 72 hours to change his mind and cancel the deal.
@Herando Sanqui if you wreck my car and give me the money you make, sure I am happy to cooperate with you. I don't know how you will get a profit but thats not my problem.
@@johndillinger8482 Uhm, if he is homosexual - you have a problem with that? ... sounds like you have a problem with homosexuality, doesn't matter if its 3 months old either. Still seems like you have a problem with someone being homosexual.
Also, Ed did tell the customer what had happened, the customer was okay with it and drove off happily in his brand new GT-R
U guys got the craziest stories! Sounds like a lot of fun! My new fav chan
Well seems like having an adrenaline rush, tension in the room you can actually touch and a Oceans 11 kind of scenario is also obtainable in a dealership, if Mr. Ed Bolian is there.
What a great story, I can't imagine the pressure that you felt to close the deal off before the customer notice that his AMG was totaled
When I saw the title I was thinking “ok its gonna be like a fender bender” then ed says “he t boned a bmw” and I was like oh no
This is my lunch break entertainment as long as they keep these going. Need more valet stories!
But was he a shrewd negotiator?
Total surprise finding episodes, not yet seen, from many years past!
"We don't do these typical scummy car salesman tactics but we do try to sell a car without the customer knowing we crashed his trade in"
Being a new car sales manager for 15 years at Acura I thankfully never wrecked a customers trade. Had a close call in a hellcat appraisal in the rain last year though!
just curious Ed have you ever contemplated starting a podcast? I am completely enamored with our knowledge and stories. I hope to lead a life like yours. lol
Makes me even more think than car sales man are a bunch of tricksters and liars
And here I was naively thinking the customer was going to get a really, REALLY good deal because of the GM's accident. Nope, hurry up and sell before the customer finds out! Am I the only one who would have been really angry to find this out after the fact?
Aerin Ravage what difference does it make? He got the car and he got a satisfactory deal.
I have no idea why but I am hooked on this channel
The customer was treated unfairly. I would never use Ed as a salesman knowing he would lie to a customer like this.
Another day, another Ed story
life cant get better than this
Ed has one of those voices you could listen to all day.
Really good story! Would love for the editor to conti he adding in the extra information about the car language like done in previous videos!
Personally, I didn't like the pop-ups, I find it very distracting. Like with Impratical Jokers on TruTV, you find yourself reading them and can't pay attention to the show.
I agree with FastGunner
FastGunner 2040 I agree with you on it being a distraction. However I would rather pause the video every minute to read than to watch the whole video and be lost.
I feel that maybe it shouldn't be as frequent and should be off to the side and smaller. So it'll be less of a distraction, and quite honestly most people don't want to pause the video every minute. I understand about being lost, but it seemed that a lot of information didn't have to be put up in text and is already known.
I really like Ed stories thank you man 👍🏼
pretty shitty way to take someones car Ed. The guy clearly wouldn't have done it once his AMG came back.
Jay Dontknowbetter At the end of the day it’s the customers choice.
And this is how a salesperson deals with ripping a customer off and smiling to your face about it.
