The Story of Sybill Trelawney (Her Entire Life) - Harry Potter Explained

- Опубликовано: 3 июл 2021
- Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we’re discussing Hogwarts’ loveable divination professor - Sybill Trelawney. However, we’re not just going to be discussing one or two aspects of her character- we’re going to be discussing it all- from her life as a young witch at Hogwarts, to the time she spent teaching and beyond. There’s a lot of ground to cover here- so let’s get in to it.
First things first- what did Sybill Trelawney look like? What were her physical characteristics? Harry’s first impression of Trelawney was as follows:
"Harry's immediate impression was of a large, glittering insect. Professor Trelawney moved into the firelight, and they saw that she was very thin; her large glasses magnified her eyes to several times their natural size, and she was draped in gauzy, spangled shawl. Innumerable chains and beads hung around her spindly neck, and her arms and hands were encrusted with bangles and rings"
Sybill Trelawney was a thin woman often draped in robes and adorned with glittering beads and accessories. She wore thick glasses that magnified her eyes, and she spoke in a sort of soft, passive voice that could quickly change if she became upset. She was a very unusual and eccentric woman that conducted herself in an almost theatrical way. Though Trelawney worked at Hogwarts, she was very much aware of what people thought of her, and her field- which meant that she would spend a lot of time by herself. Unfortunately, as the descendant of a great seer- Cassandra Trelawney, she was subject to a considerable amount of scrutiny from others for most of her life, starting in childhood.
Sybill Patricia Trelawney was born on the 9th of March sometime before the year 1963 to a muggle mother and wizard father. She was a half-blood witch, and, as I mentioned, the descendant of a famous seer named Cassandra Trelawney who lived three generations prior. After Cassandra, no one possessed the famous ‘second sight’ - or ability to see visions, that is- until Trelawney.
At the age of 11 she began attending Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry- presumably sometime around the year 1974. Before heading off to Hogwarts, however, Sybil got her wand at Ollivanders- 9 ½” long, very flexible, and made of hazel and unicorn hair.
When she arrived at the school she was sorted in to Ravenclaw house. From an academic standpoint, Trelawney was quite a good student- taking Divination as an elective subject and achieving a high grade on both her OWL and NEWT. Trelawny was also purportedly a member of Horace Slughorn’s ‘Slug Club’- a club for Slughorn’s most well-liked, accomplished, and sometimes famous students. Provided that Trelawney was the descendant of a famous seer- this is certainly within the realm of possibility.
Eventually, Trelawney graduated from Hogwarts- and it was at this point in time that she developed a connection with her first romantic interest...

Thanks for watching everyone!
Yes a video of all her predictions sounds good.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!! I’ve always been weirdly fascinated with Sybil & wished Sybill Trelawney had more screen time!….& YES PLEASE make another video about Sybill 😉🥰
Very nice vid
I would like to watch another vídeo about Trelawney!
Have you slowed down your voice?
In summary: Always ridiculed because of her predictions. But all her predictions happen to be correct.
That’s the curse of Cassandra
Usopp that you?
Just like Cassandra in the Trojan war
@@dominiqueibanez1395 her great great grandmother was actually named Cassandra
Crazy whistleblowers are fun and interesting when they’re correct ;)
i always felt bad for sybil, like she did everything right with her work and yet everyone ridiculed her, even her collogues..........
At least McGonagall and Dumbledore stood up for her in the movie
@@stevenceja4706 Yup, really loved that scene. Especially McGonagall.
“it was later revealed that Snape was eavesdropping at the door…”
you mean to say being nosy again, as he always did in the past
I predict that this video will be a great success and beautiful art of work
Thank-you!
Your prediction wae wrong mate
Sybill Trelawney was an important character in the Harry Potter franchise.
The irony of the whole thing is that divination is the foundation of real-life witchcraft.
Not really
This makes me wonder exactly what made Snape decide to eavesdrop on her job interview
Trelawney is the one who made the prophecy about Harry being the chosen one etc which Snape I believe would have been aware of and so he had a reason to take interest in her
@@dallinjc3 didn't she made the prophecy while the interview as going on though? Why would Snape decide to try and hear an interview that as far as he knew could be just an ordinary one?
i was about to say u missed out on two very important predictions she made in HBP. the Knave of Spades was a reference to Malfoy who was conflicted with his task of killing Dumbledore, and then a Tarot Card labeled the Lightning-Struck Tower was a reference to Dumbledore's death.
I'd like to watch a video about all of Trelawney's predictions and in what way they are all true. :)
Thanks for this video! It changed my opinion about Trelawney.
Supercarlin brothers have a video all about how Trelawney is always right and go through each prediction she makes and how they are right on the money just misunderstood by Trelawney herself. I'd recommend it but this was also a great video!

If I was a Hogwarts student, I'd really enjoy the accompany of Professor Trelawney, she and her subject would surely be my favorite ones! And I think I could make Trelawney feel better also by showing so much interest in Divination! :)
I would choose to study Divination as well!
@@YellowBear-kx1ff Yes, it is such a nice subject! I don't know why the Wizarding World doesn't like it.
@@hritviknijhawan1737 It may be because not a lot of wizards don’t have the Sight or Inner Eye - except for Trelawney, her great-grandmother, Grindelwald, etc.
Then Prof. Trelawney would have 2 students who would be by her side. I have always felt a kindred spirit with her. ✌🏻💙🧙🏻♀️
@@lvlinda6 yep, she is a very nice person to talk with I believe!
I’m sure Cassandra had to be bullied back in her day as well but she had the same thing as trelawny she made such great predictions and became so famous that she stoped getting bullied and I’m sure that the fact of her family tree has to help trelawny as well
Excellent video! I love the longer, deep look and I learned a lot from this video.
The second trelawney video should be called Sybill Trelawney: Fraud or not. You should explain the short summary and then go on to highlight all her predictions. Then you should decide whether you think she is a fraud or not. Then you justify it.
This. Is an awesome video idea, pls make it happen!
I've not seen a life of Sibil yet, awesome. I love the Sibil is always right in her predictions idea.
Thank you so much for making this video. Prof. Trelawney is one of my favorite characters. I’ve always felt a kindred spirit. I’d love to see a video of her predictions. ✌🏻💙🧙🏻♀️
The math seems wrong. If she started school in '74, she couldn't have applied as a teacher in '79.
1:42 She was born before 1963, which would have made her at least 17 when she applied as a teacher in 1979.
Heyyy ......I was requesting this video since a long time....THANK YOU SO MUCH❤❤❤
I really enjoyed this video ... Thank You ! Can not wait for the second one on Sybil.
Great video! Thanks for your hard work!
I would indeed enjoy a follow up video about Cybil Trelaney. I enjoy learning the backgrounds of the lesser known characters in the HP series. I think it's more interesting because not much is known about them at all.
Your vids are 🔥 love these vids
It would so be fun too hear about her visiones and predictions
Wow you’re on a roll! New videos every day!
You make awesome videos 👍🏻
Yes, I would like to see a video about Trelawney’s predictions.
I just watched The Prisoner of Azkaban and the scene in the shrieking shack got me to thinking....did all of those wands change allegiances? Lupin disarms Harry. Snape disarms Sirius who has Lupin's wand. Harry disarms Snape using Hermione's wand so would that make Snape's wand Harry's or hers? Would that also make Lupin's wand one of theirs, too? And why does a simple Expelliarmus cause Snape to fly back into the old bed and get knocked unconscious? Also, whose wand was Lupin using when he dropped it as he was changing into a werewolf. I froze on that frame and it definitely does not look like his, or anyone else's in that scene for that matter.
The disarming spell slammed Snape backwards because Harry is using Hermione's wand and it doesn't channel his power as well.
it's a mistake the movie makers made because they're not nearly as nerdy as the people who spot those mistakes
My daughter likes the idea of a divinations professor who is descended from someone named Cassandra, as that is her name. I did not name her after the famous Greek seer, but my daughter has done a lot of research into that Cassandra and thinks the history/myth is fascinating. :o)
Yeah, but Trelawney could hardly be her great-grandmother’s name from birth. With that said, maybe she was Cassandra Vablatsky.
Love your video❤️💞💖
Keep making awesome video 🙏🙏
I wonder if she never spoke of the possibility of Voldemort having someone who can kill him, if he would even have issues with the Potters/Longbottom. Because that would then eliminate Voldy going to the potters and creating the hocrux
I love your Vidoes
Thank you for sharing
One of my favourite characters and beautifully played by Emma Thompson.
Nice video, she's adorable honestly!
Nicely done. ✅
Well since u did this video (which was EXCELLENT, btw) my question kinda relates. Have u ever mentioned that Ron’s seemingly pathetic prediction to Harry that “you’re gonna suffer, but you’ll feel happy about it?” was actually true AF - in the same movie?!😃 He *absolutely* suffers, then finding Sirius-his godfather, his family-was not only not the person who got his parents killed, but the coolest, most supportive, loving guy made him happier than he’d ever been. We all laughed at his prediction - even Trelawney was exasperated w/Ron (give me the cup!) but he was totally right! Good job, Ron.😉
I sure would love to know what predictions you left out for professor turani
Video topic: Why didn't Fred and George ever noticed Peter Pettigrew's name on the Marauder's Map?
According to Seamus Gorman's theory, the Marauders put a charm on the map, so they could be the only ones being able to spot other Marauders on it, in case the map would come into someone else's possession.
@@kinga3731 Then what about Harry? He wasn't one of the Marauders, yet he still saw Pettigrew's name on it.
@@seth9655 I think in the book it was Lupin who saw the name, not Harry 😊
Wait, so The Grim appearances in class (the tea leaves) and the pity from Trelawney were are all real? Because she was sensing Voldemort's death (the horcrux in Harry), not Harry's? That's amazing writing.
Yes, I’d like a video on all of the professors predictions.
Please make a video of how to make a horcrux and the spell to make one after the murder
Happy Independence Day to you, @HarryPotterTheory! How do you think American wizards celebrate it?
“ I don’t need help it’s obvious what this means there’s going to be loads of fog tonight!”
Could you please do ‘what if Draco followed through with the task?’ How would the story have ended differently?
Sybil’s great-grandmother Cassandra Trelawney - could she have been Cassandra Vablatsky? Because Trelawney could hardly be her surname through birth.
If she was her great-grandma on her father’s side it could be

Idea for a video; Is it possible for a witch or wizard to duel wield? Meaning can a witch or wizard wield a wand in both hands?
my gosh my favourite professor in Hogwarts
Again a thing i like more about the fils.
I mean its so illogical that she just gets away with the school being full off death eaters so that tom kimms her as power demo straktion seams more fiting
can you EDIT your comment so that it makes sense.
“Being full off (sic) death eaters so that Tom kimms (sic) her as power demo straktion (sic) seams (sic) more fiting (sic)”
Not sure what is wrong with your device, but I really had to go out of my way to try and change the autocorrected spelling back to the wrong spelling several times. 🤷🏻♀️
You would think they would have specific divination spells.
I have a question, if a squib has a child with a muggle, can they be magical?
I’m almost certain that that’s how muggleborns come about. At some point in their lineage there had to have been a squib, and the “magical gene” eventually shows itself in a descendant.
@@politech2722 interesting theory. I believe that there’s a certain amount of magic in the world and after so many wizards were killed in the first wizarding war, that magic had to go somewhere. So regardless of gene make up - anyone can be born magical. Also killing wizards actually created more muggle born wizards. Take that Voldy!!!
Mafalda, a deleted character from GOF, was meant to be the magical child of a Squib (Molly Weasley’s second cousin) and a Muggle.
@@jennifercoolidgeislife6760 I like that idea. Makes it seem like magic is a sentient force in the air that tries to latch onto suitable hosts, which would explain why Hermione is able to become such a brilliant witch without even knowing magic existed for a significant portion of her life. Now I’m just thinking about how magic genes work, and if Hogwarts had any biology courses.
@@politech2722 I believe there’s a video about this. I can’t recall which one it is. It’s basically an overview as to why Hogwarts seems like they don’t have a lot of students and seems more empty.
I freaking love her.
Could you make a video about what would happen if Snape dueled/defended himself in the shrieking shack again Voldemort, once he realized Voldemort was going to kill him? I have always wondered how this would impact the events later in the Deathly Hallows.
He would put up a fight but still die
LOL NO he would have lost NO FIGHT@@jashardwallington
he wouldn't be able to put up a fight at all voldemort fought minerva mcgonagall kingsley and slughorn in a 3v1 and still overpowered them snape is not handling minerva kingsley or slughorn
Fabulous.
Question: how did gringotts end up with the philosophers stone?
It was in a different vault locked away and guarded from Voldemort from the moment they thought he would go after it until it was no longer safe. Hagrid on orders from Dumbledore transferred it to Hogwarts where the teachers placed protections around it.
It was then destroyed just in case.
7:52 Funnily enough, there were 13 people at the table, if you count Pettigrew in Rons Pocket. Meaning if Trelawney sat, there would have been 14 people at the table.
Would love a trilogy on
" My eyes and how to see past them"
Being an astrologer, numerologist and a student of occultism myself, I would pay a fortune to attend her class.
Yes please.
How do you know all of this

is higgle bottom and Longbottom some how linked????
Maybe Higglebottom is Alice Longbottom’s (Neville’s mother) maiden name?
How do y'all decide who your favorite teacher?
Happy 4th July to all you Americans! (I live in Britain) Also, how do you HP fans think American wizards celebrate Independence Day?
Independence day is a muggle thing. Wizards do not care about stuff like that.

If she applied for the position in 1979, how did she start attending Hogwarts in 1974?
He said she was born some time before 1963, so it could’ve been up to ten years before
Hey, i have a question, so in first book/movie voldemort is in proffesor quirrel, snape didn't know that and he attacked quirrel for trying to steal sorcerer's stone, how did voldemort still trust snape after that?
I really hope this makes sense
I want the prediction videos
Amazing how J.K.Rowling used parts of various countries’ mythology in the books!
Both names, Sibyl and Cassandra, delivered from the Hellenic mythology!
Before that, fun fact, Trelawney is pronounced as tre-ló-ni
Τρελόνι/trelóni in Hellenic means lunatic-crazy-psycho😂😂😂
Anyway!
Sybil *Σίβυλλα* /sívilla/ in Hellenic mythology was a woman with clairvoyance, with the gift of divination.
It was different with the priestess of Apollo Pythia at Delphi, which was at ecstasy when she foretold anything!
Pythia was answering in people’s clear questions about the future while Sybil could just ‘’see’’ the future, without being asked!
The name Sybil means:
Σίβυλλα / Sívilla
Σιός + βουλή / Siós + voulí
Sios is a Doric Hellenic term for God and voulí in ancient Hellenic means willing
So Σίβυλλα/Sybil was the one that she could reveal to human the will of the Gods
Sybil has the gift of divination from the time of her birth. She was considered an existence between humans and the Gods. She wasn’t immortal but she lived a looooot more than the simple human beings!
Sybil is depicted to hold a music instrument called Σαμβύκη/samvíki. A triangular-shaped Lyra.
Sybil had something like connection with the Gods that allowed her to know their will.
This connection to the Gods was ‘’guaranteed’’ as long as she remained virgin and indeed Sybil remained virgin for all her life!
*Cassandra*
Κασσάνδρα/Kasàndra was daughter of the King of Troy Priam and Ekàti.
She was the sister of Hector and Paris and also a princess of Troy. She was royal!
Patron God of Troy was the Helios God Apollon. God of Light, music and also divination!
Apollon gave Cassandra her abilities to foretold the future with amazing details but he asked in return her love!
Cassandra refused to Apollon and he cursed her no one to believe whatever come out of her mouth!
When Paris was born, Cassandra foretold that this boy will bring the end of Troy!
When the Achaeans built the Trojan Horse outside the Walls of Troy, Cassandra and a priest of Apollon, Λαοκόων/Laokòon, tried desperately to convince King Priam to burn down the Horse.
Cassandra told Priam that this horse was filled with soldier but no one believed her as always…
Priest Laokòon tried also to convince King Priam that this wasn’t a gift, but Poseidon (which was with the side of the Achaeans in the war) sent his sacred sea-serpent and killed Laokòon at the sea shore!
At the end Priam ordered to bring the horse inside and we all know what happened next…
Both Sybil and Cassandra were famous Seers of the ancient Hellenic mythology🇬🇷
She is my favorite professor of Hogwarts.

I think the timeline is a bit off. She couldn't have possibly applied as a professor at hogwarts in 1979 because she would've been in her 5th year as a student. Great video though, always wanted to learn more about her!
Someone PLEASE correct me if I am wrong:
My theory is that Trelawney's prophecy was taken seriously by those who'd heard it, and they took action. This basically made it self-fulfilling. Without hearing about the prophecy, no action would have been taken by the Death Eaters to alert Voldemort about a child born at the end of July. Without the prophecy, Voldemort would have just continued his hostility.
For instance, if Trelawney's prophecy was actually "as the seventh month BEGINS" then Voldemort would have felt compelled to hunt down a different helpless infant born at the START of July. Harry Potter was special because of the way he was protected by his mother. If Voldemort killed a different child who, perhaps, wasn't protected by his parents when he did the deed, it would have, at that moment, debunked Trelawney's words. So, it isn't even that Trelawney got lucky with a random, semi-specific guess-if she hadn't said a thing, nothing would have happened.
So, doesn't this theory check out? Dumbledore considered her ungifted, and he's very infrequently wrong-perhaps she was, indeed, ungifted. But as it goes, the actions that were taken to thwart the supposed prophecy directly set in motion what it said would happen. Voldemort hunted down Harry Potter, and planted the seed for his own ultimate demise in the years to come.
What Trelawney said could have just been a babbling, crazed attempt and sounding legitimate; a desperate cry for a second chance to be given the professor title after Dumbledore was left underwhelmed and unimpressed.
That's just my theory. I know there's other predictions she's made throughout the series that might well prove her gift, but I'm not quite sure it's so clear cut. I liken her in some ways to Nostradamus, who made countless predictions-intentionally cryptically-worded-so as to always be open to interpretation (and future deformation). Again, just my thoughts. If I am wrong about this though, let me know. But please be Sybill-er, civil.
Seems like Trelawney wasn't conciously in control of her power. It would come over her and not even she would remember what happened. Dumbledore recognized that the prophecy she had when in a trance was real.
The questions you bring up about her prophecies being self fulfulling are questions that apply to all prophecies. Would they come true if no one believed in them? Dumbledore talks to Harry about this in book 6.
If love to see a video of how Voldemort got his wand back
"And beyond" I see what you did there
I'm EARLY!!!!
I find it ironic that, for the wizarding world to not take divination seriously, the ministry has an entire extended room full of prophecies.
Im in...
They should’ve made a deleted scene in the Deathly Hallows part 2 where Sybil was throwing the crystal balls
And that thing to Parvati about “beware a red-haired man”. Did that one come true?
It depends.
Her identical twin did have a disastrous date with Ron in the Yule Ball. Does misattributeing a fortelling to the wrong twin make the fortelling wrong? Or does it just mean she's bad at interpretation?
I think it would be cool to hear other predictions she made
Do it!!!😎👍

It's sad that she never got the recognition she deserved. She was the real hero because with 1 prophesy she manipulated the 2 most powerful wizards to their own death. Now that, is a true seer. Think about it, that 1 prophesy set the 2 most powerful wizards in her world on a path that leads to their own destruction! All she had to do is sit back, relax, be protected and watch as the 2 wizards who controlled most of their world, fall. There are reasons seers should be feared, unfortunately, they are the most ridiculed and least respected.
'Loveable?" Not the word I'd use...
She is also Cruella's biological mother.
