    This is the kinda advice I wish I would have gotten from the beginning. I've had my adult ball for 2 weeks and he's shedding in pieces yet I've spent many days trying everything to keep his humidity up in this dry winter. Great info my friend 🤘

    If you cant get the humidity high enough cover one side with a towel I have a wet towel over half of the mesh top and its stays about 55 to 65 and that stopped it from shedding in peices

  • @TheCharleseye

    Good info. That's two things I see a lot: People who don't think about humidity at all and those who immediately bump the humidity _way_ up out of fear of shedding issues. There's no shedding issue until there is one and a bit of stuck shed is not the worst thing in the world (if it happens once in a great while and you adjust accordingly). If you start at the lower end of the spectrum (~55%) most BPs will be good to go. If a particular snake needs more humidity, it will become apparent within a month and you can bump it up gradually from there.
    The ones who aggravate me are those who never bother with humidity and then pretend that the shedding issues are their snakes' fault. If they can't do something that thousands of snakes do naturally in the wild, you always blame your husbandry, first. It's a sad owner who puts their pride above the welfare of their animals.

      Hey Charles Eye. I agree 100% with the first bit of your comment. And yes, the people who blame all their pet's health problems on the pet itself aggravates me, and is actually one of my biggest pet peeves. And it doesn't even take barley any effort at all to make sure your Ball Pythons cage is humid enough. Great Tips and Info as always, and Thanks for the Comment!!!

      So I have a couple questions. And since you both seem to have some idea what you're talking able. I've been able to regulate my temps and heating pad, however I'm having difficulty with the humidity. I'm moat concerned with when I'm not home and have to be at work. It seems I am repeatedly spaying with a spray bottle of I'm not using anything else to keep the humidity up. I have covered part of terrarium (a little more than half) this isn't helping. It still drops rapidly after spraying. So trying to come up with something, at the current moment I took my diffuser using just water and am using it as a humidifier with a little lip lifted in the covering for it to enter terarium. This works great at keeping the right level of humidity, until it shuts off after a couple hours. My issue is I have to work and can't be home to turn back on/refill as needed. I was looking into a misting system, but some say not to use them some say go ahead, some say they are a waist of money. What is the right answer here? Would either of you recommend them? Is there one you recommend? Is this healthy for a ball python? Or should I try to find a humidifier that runs longer and use that? Any advice you could give would be appreciated! I'm a first time snake/ball python owner and desperately want to do right by her!

      Hey Keoni Hines. If you are using a relativity basic setup for your Ball Python, I would recommend a daily spray down of the cage to raise the humidity. A moist hide box also works well!

    So if I live in humid Houston, how should I deal with this problem. Right now it's 10:45am the lid on the terrarium is off, my house is at 70 degress and the hydrometer is reading 72!! What should I do because this is a problem!

    • @BenjaminsExotics
      @BenjaminsExotics  4 года назад

      @Jason Moffitt II, if you want to reduce the humidity the only thing you really can do is increase the airflow and ventilation. However in this case if you Ball Python is doing well I wouldn't even worry about humidity. Just spray the enclosure when the animal is going into shed.

    How can I lower humidity??? It's 70% in my room. Can I use a dehumidifier? Or anything else?

    • @BenjaminsExotics
      @BenjaminsExotics  5 лет назад +1

      Hey Dianna Vera. Having 70% percent humidity should be fine for your pet Ball Python, as long as you don't see any signs of health problems. If you are really concerned, using a bedding like aspen will suck the humidity out of any enclosure, especially if it has good ventilation. Just make sure to spray the aspen when the snake goes into shed.

      probably raise the temp to 80-95 (at least in one area its home) this would make it more comfortable and maybe help with shedding.

    • @BenjaminsExotics
      @BenjaminsExotics  5 лет назад +1

      Hey Big Boy. As far as ambient temperature goes, it really depends on how you are heating your tub. If you're using a heating pad with a thermostat, simply bumping up the temperature on the thermostat should work just fine. And as long as you have good ventilation, 65% humidity should be just fine.

    • @BigBoy-kf2dh
      @BigBoy-kf2dh 5 лет назад +4

      @@BenjaminsExotics Thank you for responding so fast I appreciate you. And yes I'm using a zoomed heat pad with thermostat. Ok, here's where I dont understand my laser gun thermometer already reads tub temp at 93 to 94 and reads 88 to 90 on top of paper towel and if I raise it anymore would this burn a ball python. What's the highest temp can ball python handle. Sorry for the inconvenience, I'm new at this and I'm trying to get everything ready for my first ball python.

    • @BenjaminsExotics
      @BenjaminsExotics  5 лет назад +2

      Hey Big Boy. It will be different for everybody, but with my snakes, the bottom of their tub is around 90-91 degrees and when I put the paper towel/newspaper in the tub it reads 84-86 degrees, so your setup doesn't sound too far off. My main recommendation would be to watch your snake and see how he/she is reacting to your current setup. If your Ball Python is always on the cold side, that would be an indication that your cage is a bit too hot, and vice versa. If you're worried about the air temperature being too low, a simple hide placed over the heat source will create a warm pocket of air for your Ball Python to rest in and enjoy. Hopefully this helps, and if you have any more questions feel free to let me know!

    I have a tank that's well over 600 gallons. I can fit a family of 4 and my dog in it sitting down but I'm struggling with heat. I use a space heater running at 600w on one side that heats the tank from 80 to 85. And ceramic heat lamps amming at the climbing trees. With a fan that pusses the air around. But about every 15m I go from 85 to 80. My humidity stays around 70 to 80. The snakes look happy and active that do you guys think

      Hey Mair Stunna. Normally, my hot spots are around 88-90 degrees. Hey Mair Stunna. While a thermostat isn't necessarily needed if your temperatures are already on point I always recommend it. And as far as handling goes, my best advice is to do so with confidence. It will take a while for your Ball Python to develop a relationship of trust with you, all dependent on how often he/she is handled. Hope this Helps!

      Best way to test if your hygrometer is accurate - stick it in a well sealed plastic bag with some air in it, and next to it a bottle cap filled with salt and a few drops of water, just enough to make the salt like a paste, no standing water on top though! Seal that with your humidity gauge, and wait 12-24 hours. It should read 75% humidity. If not, your hygrometer is not calibrated correctly
