    I worked on this film! The lighting looks great because we used projections rather than green screen. So all the clouds/light was actually there on the day. Everything you see, the actors also saw while filming. Much like Mandalorian.

      @@JamesVSCinema it was definitely a unique experience. I didn’t work on the whole show, just the parts they filmed in New Orleans (St Francisville actually). We filmed the scenes in the floating apartment, desert clone fight and interior/exterior Morgan Freeman hideout. I worked with props. It was so fun!
      Also Tom Cruise is a class act. Said hello and thanked everyone for working hard. He did this every day.

      @@slaid3876 That's so cool. Can't imagine how amazing it must of been to work on this film. Also, how gratifying it must be to see it on the big screen. Also, I forgot to mention, but you certainly did a fantastic job. The probs in this film are fantastic and some of the best looking in any modern sci-fi film. You are not the only one dude, Olga Kurylenko is just breathtaking. BTW, It's a good thing you mentioned "The Mandalorian" because that clean look you are talking about is the same technology they used in the Disney series. They used the same virtual set which uses LED screens instead of your usual green screen background. The difference is that with the virtual set, they can achieve natural lighting without using VFX and can also benefit from avoiding film location trips.

    • @JamesVSCinema

    • @TimothySnowman
      @TimothySnowman 3 года назад +14

      It wasn't quite the same. It wasn't LED screens, it was all front projection, but it was absolutely the predecessor for "The Volume" used in the Mandalorian. There's some great BTS footage for this movie: ruclips.net/video/eyHwDizJ-xE/видео.html

    • @mycroft16
      @mycroft16 3 года назад +2

      Well sort of. What they used here is a very early precursor of what they used on the Mandalorian. The wrapped scrims around the house set and then they went up the mountains in Hawaii and shot 360 degree footage of sunsets etc and played THAT footage back with projectors onto the scrims. It was not interactive in any way. They could design sets with it. It just provided real atmospheric lighting. What they did on Mandalorian is orders of magnitude beyond that. Using Unreal Engine to create real time lighting and interactive projections to match motion camera moves. So when the camera moves left, the projected scenery moves right. Mando's tech is freaking 3 levels beyond next level.

    An insanely underrated movie. If you watched this on a laptop, then you have comitted a most grievous sin. I would highly recommend watching the behind the scenes. There is far less CGI than you'd think, and as others have pointed out, they are using the same tech they would later use on the Mandalorian.
    The advertising for this movie really hurt it. First, they advertised it as an action flick which it is clearly not. Second, they were not gonna ignore Morgan Freeman in the advertising so they ruined the first plot twist.
    The poem they keep repeating is Babington's Horatius:
    Then out spoke brave Horatius, the Captain of the Gate:
    “To every man upon this earth, death cometh soon or late;
    And how can man die better than facing fearful odds,

The woman looking out of the window is actually looking at a huge screen with the sky projected onto it. This is why the lighting looks so good because it's actually there and not just added in post. That's why you can see the sky in the reflections around the rooms.
    Tech 049 was the only one that found the oasis which is why the other Techs didn't go there.

    The sound design in this movie is insane. I absolutely loved the sounds the drones made. They sounded so menacing.
    I know a lot of people don't like Tom, and that's okay, but I personally feel that this guy was built for science fiction. Both this and Edge of Tomorrow show how great he can be in this kind of role.
    This is such a great story. A very simple one, but one that's delivered almost perfectly. The scene at the end when Tech 52 meets his daughter is so amazing.
    The score to this movie is absolutely incredible. I've been a huge fan of M83 for many years now, but their collaboration with Joseph Trapanese knocks this one out of the park. Their "I'm Sending You Away" track is one of my all-time favourite pieces.

    One of the best things about this film is rewatching it. You’ll notice all the actor’s subtleties. Like Becca remembered more and had the same dreams as Jack.
    Also, I have a fantastic story about seeing this film in theaters, as there was a little boy and his father sitting in front of us. During the pool scene, when she jumps in naked, the boy goes, “Whoaaaaaaaaaa dad…..did you see that pool?!?” We all lost it, including the father.

    You know why this reminds you of the Mandalorian? This is one of the first movies to use projection mapping which the Mandalorian uses for everything. That's why the edges are so clean. Everything is lit by the virtual set instead of that weird haloing when you comp out a background

    It looks so good because they shot actual footage of the sky and projected it on a screen around the glass house that way all the reflections and lighting would be much more realistic. Mandalorian is similar except their screen as LED. I really

    An amazing and underrated sci-fi film. Though the story maybe a bit cliché to sci-fi fans, what sets this film apart is the absolutely amazing visuals. This film has hands down till this day one of the best shots in any sci-fi film in the scene where you see the shattered moon in the sky with all the debris. Also, the design of the robot drones and even the TET itself are absolutely fantastic.

    James, you get to see a little bit more of Olga in Hitman (2007).
    Freeman's quote at the end comes from a poem:
    “Then out spake brave Horatius,
    The Captain of the Gate:
    To every man upon this earth
    Death cometh soon or late.
    And how can man die better
    Than facing fearful odds,
    For the ashes of his fathers,
    And the temples of his gods”

    Kosinski’s visual style works so well with sci-fi, and while I’m sure Top Gun will look great, it’s a shame he couldn’t get ‘The Black Hole’ or ‘Tron 3’ off the ground.

    The same composer who worked with Daft Punk on the score for Tron: Legacy.
    The main theme of this score is by M83, primarily Anthony Gonzalez who collaborated with the more “indie electronic” aspect of the score.
    Joseph Trapanese helped compose additional music, arrange, orchestrate, and conduct the score.
    Joseph Trapanese deserves to get more attention!

    that Cabin in the woods location is real. It was filmed over in the June Lake area. That is very near Mammoth Lake in California. I go Camping for a week every year for the 4rth of July for nearly 40 years a couple of Canyons North at a place called Leavitt Meadows , on Hwy 108 near Hwy 395. It's a private campgrounds but my brother in law has a key to the gate.

      It's code words to determine if the team is deteriorating (from getting memories back) and needs to be pulled out - i.e. exterminated - and replaced by new clones. It makes sense that's in there, and a hint that something is off.

    It's funny, you mentioned wanting to play Destiny and somehow I'd never really put the two together in my head before (the Tet always made me think of Atlas from No Man's Sky instead), despite this being one of my absolute favourite movies and Destiny being my favourite game. How has that never clicked? 🤦‍♂️

    Jack's house in the sky was a full size set, not CGI. They'd gone to a Hawaiian Volcano and filmed HD sky for ages, morning noon and night.
    This was then projected on set so the house was lit naturally when filming. CGI replaced by real world effects.
    The thing I really loved about this movie was the coherence and consistency of the TET design aesthetic. Look at any "army" or major organisation in history, their design/iconography is consistent.

    The visual design on this movie is fantastic, you can clearly see the director had a background in architecture.
    But as others have noted not at all like the virtual sets of The Mandalorian, it was a bit too early for that. It was mostly 'traditional' FX with beautiful on location shots and smart set design. The video backdrops they used on the set of the apartment can be seen as a stepping stone towards 'the volume' as used by The Mandalorian though.

    I remember seeing "The Making Of..." years ago and ya they did have a special rendering system. I don't recall now if it was HD rear Projection, or the "Madalorian" style of almost enclosed computer graphics. The reflective light in both gave"Heat" to the actors and set...

    I think there are a few confusing narrative points in this script, but the movie itself is very underrated. I like a lot of the themes and the visuals. This would have made an excellent mini-series. I want more info on the backstory of civilization of people living on the surface. That could be cool.

    With a little work this could make a great video game premise. ESPECIALLY because, IMO, not enough games have a built in narrative reason WHY you get multiple lives. For that reason I actually think Edge of Tommorow would make an awesoe video game.

    It's a shame you aren't getting the Director's commentary with Tom Cruise and the Making of clips from the old BluRay/DVDs. This film was the ground breaker for the tech which became routine for Mandalorian. Which makes Oblivion a milestone for sets like the Abyss was for objects.
