Never missed an episode of this when I was in 4th grade. Great show. A little hokey sometimes, but that's part of the formula, much like a Star Wars film.
Daphne Maxwell Reid, definitely had that effect on a quite a few budding Colonial Viper Pilots! I would've flown her wing anytime! And having her, Athena, and Brie, in a strike group, WOWZERS!
God Bless Richard Hatch. May he rest easy, he was not only an actor on the show but possibly the biggest fan of BSG there ever was and a true lover of Sci-Fi. I know Axanar never panned out how it should have, but the original Kickstarter video where he plays the Klingon leader, man we missed a treat, he was epic. And it was so great to see him brought into the remake of BSG. He was a man who never looked his age for sure. I hope he is having tea with Carl Sagan somewhere out there right now.
Original BSG was a masterpiece. It was too expensive to create to create (I think over a $1,000,000 an episode) at the time. It took me a while to get into the Ron Moore version but I really enjoyed that too.
I always forget it was only one season because at least ABC went all in and ordered 24 episodes, far more than most current series seasons. Original BSG covered a lot of story in the time they were allowed.
The special effects of the space craft fights are really awesome for a show that was shown on tv and made more than 40 years ago... but it was costly, which was one of the reasons why the show and production was canceled. 🙁

Great point about the worst pilots. A viper was erratic during the mission and tipped off The Cylons to Galactica's desperation. Ultimately setting off a chain of events that would get starbuck captured, and Serena K.I.A.

Don't forget that was Jane Seymour there. This was the best sci-fi tv show ever. Everything worked to make this show so good and it only lasted a few yrs. Stargate SG-1 probably is right up there but the last few seasons were not as good after season 7.
It had nothing to do with them being women, it was inexperience he was concerned about. Most of them only were in simulators, never even flying an actual viper yet. They disobeyed orders and flew so erratic that the colons couldn’t program a sequence of intercept. So it was shear blind luck they survived. A luck that wouldn’t likely be repeated. And in the end cause the capture of one of the best pilots the fleet had cause he was protecting the most vulnerable. Without that sacrifice they may well had lost the rookie squadron in entirety.
No, he says it's a lack of training. They did lousy in the simulator training. One nearly crashed on launch and they might have had a fatality. I'd need to look but in the novel one woman didn't belong there, she cheated to get in. Even a guy would have been rejected. When the enemy comments on how the Galactica's pilots were flying that gives Apollo a bit of credibility.
No, in the TV episode Apollo doesn't come right out and state that it's because the replacement pilots are female, that he sees them as unqualified. But I watched the episode, and I know that the fact that his wife-to-be, has just "passed her shuttle-pilot 'quals'", was a major factor in his objections to leading those newly minted replacement Viper Pilots, on their first combat mission!
@drmayeda1 Apollo didn't want to show 'favoritism'. "If I hold 'one' of them back, I should hold them 'all' back!" Besides, Serina would never let him hear the end of it, if he found a way to 'ground' her, but he let Athena, fly combat.
As many times as Starbuck has pulled that reverse thrusters maneuver, you'd think that bit of strategy would penetrate that metal shell around the Cylons' brains and they'd learn to anticipate it. Thank the Lords of Cobol that those computer-brained idiots don't learn very well and are crap at adapting to changing situations. I will always love the original Battlestar Galactica over the remake. The remake had a cool idea with its human-appearing Cylons, but it can't beat the hope and humanity of the original. Plus, the original was more human than the remake because it injected humor into some of its episodes (usually involving Starbuck, of course, but elsewhere, too), whereas the remake was ALWAYS so dark and grim. It made more people care about the characters and what happened to them. Furthermore, the music of the original was better, too. I can easily recall the original's theme, but I draw a blank on that of the remake.
The original was set more towards kids while new is more towards adults. I look at both series in the time and how they looked at the take As a kid watching the original we never looked at things such as how 1 warship was supposed to protect 220 unarmed, overpacked, and slow moving ships. We were mire into the story of traveling across the universe. There was losses on the ahow but not as much times held on to those losses. There was always more vipers -- in spite of there only being 67 recovered (25 of Galactica's) in the original episode. There was a constant influx of new materials easily collected. Even after 2 of 3 agro ships plantings were destroyed, they were able to get new seeds in days and could speed grow from them. In the new series you still see 1 warship protecting a large unarmed fleet -- but they could do jumps to flee. There was materials shortages and breakdowns that showed how on the edge they were. Water and food were in short supply. In old series names were just that names. Starbuck, Apollo, etc. In new series they were the call signs of the pilots. To me that diminished the idea.
Here is an interesting thought. At the of this episode in 1978 women had just started being admitted to the three military academies. I think one year later the first women graduated from the academies.
I remembered as a 10 year old watching these reruns from my dad's collections in the late 1990's. When the girls did their part and blew up those Cylons I was ecstatic for days. I couldn't wait to watch more!

It should be noted that were no female warrior pilots. It was only the result of all of the men being sick that the female shuttle pilots were drafted to be combat pilots. Athena was supposed to be a warrior pilot but she was never shown in Viper. Hopefully Brie got better in her aim later on.
Athena was originally a flight control officer on Galactica's Bridge. Lt. Sheeba was a Colonial Viper pilot transferred over from Pegasus, Commander Cain's daughter.
