The bell!!! I bought the same bell for my house about four months ago. Now, if you have some spare time, I need someone to install it. It can't be that far a drive from Idaho. Actually, who needs batteries, you can hear the darn thing throughout the house - including the basement and all the bathrooms at exactly the wrong time.
This is the exact type of doorbell I plan on getting for my house. I have an old friend in New England who had a doorbell like this and I swore that I will get one like it when my husband and I get our homestead. :)

Had these on all my homes growing up in New England. They are just great, simple and straight forward. A+
We've had a couple of them. They are fun.
Off topic a little but have you looked at building retaining walls with rammed earth filled tires? Easy to get tires by checking with shops, posting ads or checking for places people dump large numbers. Once build easy to cover ether in plaster or rock so could build retaining walls that look like rock to make level areas or retaining walls along the road you are building up the hill.
Most places you can build a under 4 foot retaining wall without needing an engineer to be involved but if you are using for the road you would want tiebacks into the hillside to reduce the load a vehicle places on the wall.
Could also be used for a root cellar into the hillside as once plastered no one would care how the walls look and they are better insulating then cement block.

What a great doorbell!It's totally perfect for the off grid house. It's beautiful too. It reminds me of the one at my aunt's place in Ireland. Not sure where you got that but it was an awesome find. This style of doorbell, though nowhere near as ornate as this one, was on many a door right up until the 80s/90s in Australia (or at least in my neck of the woods). Thank you for jogging a memory. I'd never really noticed the lack of these style doorbells until now. Oh, I deliver goods to households, so I tend to come across a variety of door knocking devices LOL.

I want a bell like that ,, and I like what you and your brother are doing , and your attitude to doing it your way, your family obviously like snow but can I suggest you have a look at Oppenheimer ranch project on you tube , the world is heading for an ice age that could slowly effect your road access and your area in general ,, doesn't hurt to be aware

Good Find! It's something my now passed father would have appreciated very much, he was a joiner by trade and as such made many wood doors himself, he also learnt me many of his wood working skills in my growing up, and although this was not my chosen trade (Chef now retired) I still have all his tools, some of which he hand made (various wood block planes), these he made as part of his apprenticeship and used often until he passed, and now I use them and keep them sharp for my DIY and I will hand them on to my son when I pass to keep them in the family.
