I know this has been said time and time again, but Val Lehman's portrayal of Bea Smith is brilliant, Bea plays it so cool, and just waits for her chance to move in, or attack her enemy.. You end up just gripped and waiting for that moment.
The writers probably have something to do with that as well ;-)
I use to watch this as a kid i thought bea was tough..but now I see she really cared a lot about the ladies and hated drugs...good on ya Bea!

I agree Bea was a fantastic leader and a much funnier character in the Early episodes before she got too serious in the Bea Vs Freak years!.She was a working Class woman who was intelligent and showed natural leadership abilities,she also didn't mind not being the centre of attention unlike later years,Bea and Val stayed to long,as I previously said she should have left when Sandy Edwards appeared or after the Wentworth Fire when she could have been missing presumed dead,but escaped to Queensland for a new life with Her old mate Monica,better than the ending she did get.
Well, first Steve was the only lawyer, now I guess Greg is the only doctor in Melbourne.

Karen was singled out for preferential treatment the entire time she was in prison: a ridiculously short sentence considering her crime, getting to go to university doing her time. She had a Greg, Steve, Meg, Jean all rooting for her and putting their necks out on the line for her. Other prisoners would have given anything to have that support and those opportunities. And she took it for granted then and now. Quitting university because she "doesn't see the point now she's outside," being pretty and rude to Meg. And she always acted like she was superior to the other women. Ridiculous.

I believe that in time she definitely would have helped the women from Wentworth and other prisons like a future character does. 😃
This prison drama definitely shows that characters do tend to come back to Wentworth one way or another, as it is familiar ground to them, almost like home, whether they are an inmate, a staff member, or even an outside helper coming to visit Wentworth when the writers and the producers can get the characters back and when the actors come back. 😃😊👍🏻
I rather see Angela and Karen as opposed to predatory lesbos like Judy, Franky, and The Freak.

Karen is ridiculous and immature. She needs to grow up a hell of a lot. Sorry, but she is unfit to run any kind of house, let alone a halfway house. Much more could have been done with her character, such as growing to be a strong woman instead of a child.
"Don't you threaten me, Smith!" I love the uneasy relationship and tension between Toni and Bea. Two powerful women.
I can't believe she told Bea to shut up. She seemed ok when she first got there but her main character syndrome is getting a little out of hand.
@@cavaliothorson7755 She was a really good adversary for Bea - probably not up to beating her physically (although if cornered, who knows...) but pretty much her match in terms of wits and influence. I wonder what would have happened had Toni became a long-running character.
Toni McNally was a great character,a true Icy Bitch who was used to giving orders and having them obeyed,but wasn't too proud to deal with enemies herself eg Jackie Coulson,Ruth Ballinger may have been a bigger Bitch,but Toni was more deadly,would have loved Pat King to have stayed longer,like Catherine Roberts,And Barbara Davidson and Monica Ferguson she had potential but was got rid of Far too soon,another Mistake on PCBH that should never have happened!

Angela is amazing, and that is a fucking good deal she offers Karen near the end, Angela is far to generous and reasonable for her own good, and karen singularly failed to appreciate how lucky she was to have had her paths cross with Angela..
Bea went from calling Vera by her first name to calling her vinegar non stop. Vera doesn't take any action. 😂😂😂
Vera's repertoire consists of, "You think you're pretty smart don't you?", "The rest of you get back to work" and Let's see what the Governor has to say". Change the record Vera!

Vera was a very interesting character over the first forty episodes, but as time goes on the writers turn her into a caricature of herself.

Greg's narrow minded attitude is that- Angela is a lesbian, so therefore is incapable of altruism towards another woman without there being a lesbian motive. He also truly believes that _because_ Angela is a lesbian, then she should be avoided at all costs because she is a terrible person. What a disgraceful mind set he has. He is seriously pathetic.

Unfortunately Greg's attitude was fairly universal in 1980. You don't even have to analyse the background reasons, it usually didn't get any further than gay = bad.

Karen's degree course seems to have faded away. As if Oz in 1980 was a place were having a degree was useless! Angela Jeffers even said 'well, maybe you won't even need a degree for the kind of work you'll do at the halfway house....' Crazy.

The man who played Vera's drug dealing boyfriend George Lucas (Bill Hunter) was briefly married in real life to the woman who played Toni (Pat Bishop). Their 1976 marriage reportedly lasted only 17 days because Hunter ran off with one of their wedding celebrants.

Hallelujah. Greg and Meg are done. They had to be the worst pairing I've ever seen on a show. I'm glad Karen is being open about her feelings. Maybe Meg should have put more energy into re-connecting with her son than keeping her bed warm. Her calling Karen childish is a true case of the pot calling the kettle black. Look how she dealt with Leanne most of the time! Or how paranoid she is any time Greg is near a young woman. She started out as a nice character, but this romance made her almost entirely intolerable.

Angela's hair permanently looks like she's wearing an invisible helmet with all the edges fluffed out. And yes, she is beautiful. So, she's pretty lucky she can get away with that 'do just because of her face! :)

Colleen Powell's husband Patrick was played by Rob Steele who was the dirty old man with the sunburned nose at the wedding, Leo Higgins, who gave Muriel his business card to give to her father. It was a great movie in its time, alot of fun.

That came fron fifty years of smoking. Probably unfiltered cigarettes too. My sister is 53 and has been smoki g since she was thirteen. She has that same mucus cough too. She smokes all day and all night too. I'm surprised that she hadn't had a heart attack or been diagnosed with Emphysema or COPD. My father had two heart attacks and had stents put in and died from kidney and lung cancer. She is just like him. So she'll probably end up the same way too.
@@TheCosmicVagabond It was 1991, I looked it up two days ago. They say her funeral and memorial service was standing room only, everyone adored Sheila. I have a book about her life and she was a very lovely baby, child and young woman. When her only daughter Susan died in 1951, this aged her.

Karen's always been so utterly boring and insipid, yet all of a sudden she decided to be catty and bitchy to Greg and Meg. Hmmm, they were two of the people in the prison that were nice to her and enabled her to get priveliges (sp). What I also don't get, is that Greg isn't exclusively or otherwise in a relationship with either Meg or Karen. Have I missed something? I think this is all down to Meg and Karen fighting for Greg's attention and taking it out on each other. Really, both should ask themselves if a man who doesn't really bother with them is worth it...
Lamp Shade im just watching the series all over again this month and yes greg is a two timing loser, no man is worth it, especially if they do that and can't see through a relationship(s)!! Im done with it, I believe you wont get hurt as much if your not attached, but i'm not saying all men are the same. I just think some are taught by some parents that can narrowminded and bullying!
