- The Japanese government has begun an official investigation into the Unification Church months after former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot dead, allegedly by a man who had a grudge against the group.
There have been recent revelations about links between the religious group and the governing Liberal Democratic Party.
The church has been under scrutiny since Abe's assassination in July, with the suspect saying his family had been bankrupted by donations to the group.

The only thing I'm shocked and surprised about this whole thing is international press saying this is somewhat a revelation that came after Shinzo Abe's assassination... it might have thrown everything more on public view and international scrutiny, but it's not like Japanese citizens didn't already know or at least suspected about all of this.
Perhaps I'm mixing things up here, but as far as I know, the links between LDP and the Unification Church, along with several other ultra nationalist and ultra conservative organizations, has been well known and reported for decades now. The "church" itself has an ideology that aligns itself with several policies including anti-LGBT stuff, nationalistic policies, policies regarding the militarization and changes to the constitution, revisionist material in schools, among several other stuff.
Mind you, I'm not sure if there was already something about the Unification Church specifically, but it's the same radical groups and the same base mentality. Basically speaking, it's the sort of cult that ultra nationalist and ultra conservatives would gather together to influence politics.
Those things might sound separate, and perhaps they are a bit, but make no mistake - it's a church founded on anti-communist stance, which might sound fine at first, but what this actually means is that it's a very pro conservatism and pro nationalism cult, basically. And it's very likely that the groups with a hard fringe-like political stance also participate in the very same cult. You have extreme ideologies mixed up among all those groups involved with the LDP.
For people who never heard about the Unification Church but watched some cult documentaries, you will have heard about the "Moonies". It's often listed right along with famous others like Heaven's Gate, Aum Shinrikyo, People's Temple and Scientologists.
That's what the Unification Church is. It's a cult that has a long history of exploiting followers until they are penniless, a cult that formed bonds with very powerful people to gain political influence and money, it was investigated in the past by US House of Representatives for trying to gain political power.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unification_Church#Criticisms_of_Moon
So, don't let the name fool you - they changed it a few times to avoid the negative association. It's not a church, it's a cult. A huge cult with a long history of malfeasance. This is not the same as a president saying he is Christian or something like that. This is a political party aligning itself to something like Scientologists, KKK, or some other radical group. To make things even worse, as some will know, Japan is largely a non-religious country. Christians are minority, and the predominant religions, Shintoism and Buddhism, are seen more for traditional and cultural backgrounds, and less as actual religion and faith.
Here, some docs on the Unification Church for those interested

Sounds like a made up story for a Prime minister in charge during Fukushima.. & giving too much info 🙄 & they think people are stupid. How terrible
In addition to Unification Church, some Japanese leftists suspect that religious right-wing groups such as the Japan Conference and the Shinto Association of Spiritual Leadership had an influence on Mr. Abe's beliefs.
Things to know
:unification church is from South Korea. (Unification originally means the unification of South Korea and North Korea and as they got power it extended to the unification of world). For now, they have more than 3million members around the world including 600,000 Japanese and 300,000 Koreans,100,000 American. The funny thing is they have strong anti-communist policy but they have had good relationship with North Korea leaders. The founder of the church even met Kim IL sung personally and they have a church in North Korea as well. North even sent letters for condolences when the founder was dead. And Abe was one of famous anti-south Korean politician but he had strong connection to the church made by Korean. What an irony! I think when it comes to money and benefit from unification church, Japanese and North Korean leader is so honest. 🤣
@@user-gu3zf4st9f
Abe made connections with the Unification Church to rescue people abducted by North Korea
and sent a video message to UPF, an affiliate of the Unification Church, as a means of making connections with the President of the United States at that time.
But he should have sought other means.
The reason why a lot of people will be coming new to this story is partly because BBC hasn’t reported it until now. It didn’t mention the tie between the late PM Abe and the Unification Church even in the coverage on his national funeral. I don’t think BBC has chosen not to report the news, but it simply didn’t have good resource of information. I have some solutions; ask a couple of Japanese people or read a few articles from Japanese newspapers. If there is a problem with the language, Guardian has some good articles.
NHK World Japan, The Japan Times, Japan Today will be good for those who are interested in Abe’s news. However, I suspect BBC didn’t have a good source of information because it can gather information from Japanese news agencies or by itself.
The Guardian has the money and fund Chinese Communist Party! The China's affairs reporter of the Guardian is working for CCP to gather information, so he live in the UK rather than China to report 'China's affairs' news.
Rupert "Wing Commander" Hayes should have picked up the story much earlier.

NOBODY IS DUMB reality is they could not beat ABE in an election. They found someone who had A LOT OF DEBT and made him a offer he could not and did not refuse. They found someone who happen to be a munition expert... the chances of that. LOOK the Japanese think like everyone else. If your parent went into debt with the church who are you going to take that debt up with THE CHURCH or the dam prime minister. The prime minister does not have your money the church does...so it make no sense. Someone with protest would go after the head of the dam church, his killing by this means does not make any sense. People want to act like Japanese politics is not dirty, when clearly it is.
This young Japanese man has changed the way politics will be done in the future in Japan.

Agreed. This has been all over English-language news out of Japan for months. The BBC is wildly late on this topic.
While western media do cover the story of the church's controversial link with Japan's ruling party, it is nowhere near as "frequent" as Japan's local news agencies. Some lesser but still reliable western media like Vox and TL:DR News don't bother with this topic at all.
I think the main reason is that this drama is not as trendy as other news in the western societies. In the US particularly, the equivalent GoP's tie with the evangelical, while vastlt unpopular to the left, isn't a taboo at all.

Maybe I read more international news, but I heard immediately first week that it was due to his church ties. I think even from bbc itself. Maybe they’re just re-reporting as it’s back in the cycle due to a recent police investigation 🤷♂️. What a ‘suprise’ major right wing party has ties to conservative religious group, call me shocked…
Even if the church is “corrupt” I think the son is insane to have killed someone for this. Old women have donated their life’s savings upon death to the church (any church) for as long as it’s been a thing, perhaps she just didn’t want to give them any money… I’ve heard all about my family in the past doing the same, and much like this murderer, the living family members were very annoyed, but you aren’t entitled to anything just because of relations, if they chose to give that money away then they chose to.
Finally some good journalism in the public interest and all it took was a horrifying murder.
Never give money to God (any god) until god proves he or she needs a place to live or anything to eat.

Many Japanese people are not as hawkish as Abe. They may not want to discuss the Japan's war crimes committed in other Asian regions, but can be very sympathetic when being confronted. The church specifically target this group of Japanese people to guilt-trip them into donating all of their wealth to cleanse the bad karma of the invasion.
Interesting.
its not a church if donations bankrupt the donor.

Hi
Is this the the Church that released its own anime movies???
Does this make the killer a hero?
Yes
Really more of a martyr for a cause long abandoned by many in the Japanese public. His killing of Abe and pointing the finger at the cult definitely did spark an uproar in Japanese society though. There must always be someone held responsible in that country. I doubt the killer thought that far, he just wanted some catharsis, but the effect is inevitably poetic.

I still can't understand why the killer picked to kill the former prime minister rather (an affiliate to the group) rather than a leader of the group.
The suspect said he tried number of times to target the leader of the group, but there was little to no opportunity for him to get close to the leader of the cult. That is why he switched target to Shinzo Abe and went for him when he was giving election speech in the public.

Sadly karma caught up as the murderer held his maternal grandfather responsible for allowing the unification church to come to Japan. Who was Abe ' s grandfather? the suspect class A war criminal, Kishi, who held absolute control of Manchuria in 1930s in China which had become a puppet state for Japan. The japanese even named him "Monster of the Shōwa era"
Wiki:
Accordingly, the Japanese conscripted hundreds of thousands of Chinese as slave labor to work in Manchukuo's heavy industrial plants. In 1937, Kishi signed a decree calling for the use of slave labor to be conscripted both in Manchukuo and in northern China, stating that in these "times of emergency" (i.e. war with China), industry needed to grow at all costs while guaranteeing healthy profits for state and private investors.[27] Starting in 1938 and continuing to 1945, about one million Chinese were taken every year to work as slaves in Manchukuo.[28] The harsh conditions of Manchukuo were well illustrated by the Fushun coal mine, which at any given moment had about 40,000 men working as miners, of whom about 25,000 had to be replaced every year as their predecessors had died due to poor working conditions and low living standards.[23]
Oof. Talk about karma. What did turn him into a monster and decide to kill a prime minister? This monster who killed the PM decided that the aftermath would bring down the Moonies.
@@RickRobinCagnaan you haven't read the story yet on how his mother was brainwashed into donating all her money (inheritance money as well) to the univerfication Church and bankrupted the family when the murderer was only a teenager who was forced to work without going to college and his sister later also committed suicide?
I said it is sad and terrifying because it was family karma from Abe grandfather, a concept that is very familiar in confucian culture where the sins committed by one family member would be carried to its subsequent generations, There are too many incidents in history where the off springs of mass murderer die prematurely with freak accidents like there is a curse.
