  • Japanese officials are asking people in their 20s and 30s to drink more alcohol to boost the country's economy.
    Younger generations in Japan drink less alcohol on average, compared to the drinking culture often found in older generations.
    A new campaign has been set up by the country's National Tax Agency to find new ways to encourage its youth to drink more often.

    I'm glad to hear that younger generations of Japanese have rejected the obligatory after work drinking culture. No one should feel pressured to consume alcohol. The government needs younger people in charge if this is the best solution the older generation can come up with. Rather disgusting actually.

    I was stationed at a joint military base in Japan for three years. The Japanese women I worked with would tell me how awful that mandatory after work drinking was for their husbands. They would say that the husbands would stumble in after midnight every day fully drunk and obnoxious and angry.
    The men had no choice- if the boss says we’re going to drink you have to go. They also said that this is the time when bosses let their employees openly express their stress and grievances, and it is not held against them if said during the drunk fest.
    I taught English to youngsters and the pressure from the parents to be so perfect and successful was maddening.
    School was Monday through Saturday and the youth I taught were tired, angry and scared-scared of not living up to their parents expectations. High pressure society from my observations.

      @JWats-ux1qk Год назад

      @@EvilKris Moved here when I was 20 and in university and have stayed here for over 6 years so I can speak for experience when I say nights out drinking can cost quite a bit.
      There are some establishments that offer nomihoudai and those are great. They usually cost 1500-2000 yen per person but they tend to serve watered down cocktails that might get a 100lb female drunk, but might be a bit lacking for heavy drinkers.
      Most young people prefer to drink around busy stations (Nanba, Tokyo, Shibuya, Kyoto, Osaka, Umeda, Roppongi, etc.). Izakayas are generally more popular than bars amongst uni students, and those can get pretty expensive. For example, check out the hub menu where beers cost about 600-1000 yen each, and during happy hour they average to about 700 yen each. Other drinks average out to be around 700 yen per glass.
      Not to mention most groups tend to split the bill evenly between each person, meaning a night how will cost a minimum of around 3000 yen if you go drinking with friends(minus transportation).
      So through my own experience and observations during my student life, nights out on the town are, surprise surprise, expensive for college students. This is especially the case if you are taking ladies out on dates.
      There are obviously other factors such as piss poor part-time wages, interest in other hobbies besides drinking, general inflation, lack of friends/ isolation, and an increased attentiveness to health.

As long as I know, still young people used to go to drink normally at least until when COVID19 started, and even recently many people go to drink again because people are sicking tired of staying at home anymore and government seems gave up on taking any actions for COVID19 seriously. I live in Tokyo area, and as long as I know, many young people go to drink still. On the other hand, in the rural areas, young people are still taking over the old Japanese culture very well, and they often go to drink, and I don't see any difference from before. I can tell only the difference is that young people who don't join or try not to join parties held by their companies (NOMIKAI) are increaseing because it is not fun at all for youger people. I am a middle age guy but I even try to skip such parties because older people drink a lot and get drunk very soon once the party starts and they often harass those in lower positions including sexual harassment normally. Still Japan has strong confucianism. Such parties are mostly held at Japanese restaurants (IZAKAYA), and used to support not small % of revenuew of those restrants and liquor companies. So, I guess that less consumption of alcohol in Japan is mainly because of COVID19 and somewhat because of less chances having such parties. On the other hand, it seems that young people go to drink with their friends without older people as long as I know. I didn't know the announcement but I guess it is not widely announced well or I just missed... Interesting...

    Maybe the truth behind this “encourage thing” is the low birthrate in Japan.
    It’s not a secret, that an alcohol make people more well-disposed for new acquaintances and some types of relationships, which can lead to the birth of a child😏

    • @nightforest1693
      @nightforest1693 Год назад

      True but its not the case for everyone also not everyone may be happy they had a child when drunk and may encourage the woman to have an abortion. Also by doing this it makes it seem like Japan really doesn't care about its Citizens and only see them as pawns to order around however they wish and its a really bad look when Japan used to brag about working their Citizens nearly to death which is what caused this whole decling birth rate in the first place because the less free time you give someone the less time they have to focus on other things e.g. being in a relationship or starting a family!

      Yeah, that pissed me off. He also has no idea about the about the genetic deficiency the woman was talking about where some asian people can get dangerously drunk very quickly (like literally hammered after two shots of vodka) because they don't have the enzyme to break down acetaldehyde. Alcohol becomes a bunch of different chemicals during digestion, and this one is basically formaldehyde, and that's pumping around their bodies unbroken.

      Your correct, the UK does have a drink problem, this news report however was talking about Japan and not the UK. You can find many news reports about the UK drinking culture if you want to learn more.
      But don't be naive to think Japan doesn't also suffer from alcoholism to the same scale or if not, greater, for a number of other reasons you can research yourself.

      @@diggingga6197 he might be high but your tripping if you're problem with individual cities, counties or states in the US legalizing weed is the local governments making money off of the taxes. You do know that marijuana is not legal at the Federal level and it's still completely illegal to have, use or sell in six states and in many individual counties and regions of the other states, right? And if it's legalized it's just a plant - a weed even, so you can grow it yourself and not have to pay any taxes. Legalizing marijuana is good for everyone except law enforcement and the prison system.

      @@DennisMoore664 Yeah. Meanwhile, you can't grow alcohol. Technically, you can ferment it, but that takes way more skill then does growing marijuana. For alcohol, you entirely have to rely on corporations to supply you.

      @@TommyElijahCabelloReal When you say alcohol I'm guessing you are meaning distilled spirits, but both beer and wine are even easier to make than growing marijuana. All it requires is malt as your base, hops for flavor, water, sugar and yeast to ferment it all. A little basic cooking and a lot of patience and a batch beer will be ready for consumption in about half the time it takes to grow a crop of bud. Wine isn't much different except for some of the ingredients and how long it takes. Even distilled spirits (moonshine) isn't all that hard to make but you do need more specialized equipment and to be a bit more careful since it's more flammable. But none of it requires some Heisenberg dude or other trained chemist to get the cook right.
