Hyundai Ioniq 5 N Why I didn't buy it

  • I really enjoyed driving the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, and was approved by Hyundai to buy on. I backed out due to the reasons in this video. It's a fanstatic car but I don't know if I have a home for it in my current garage. The best EV I have ever driven. Loads of character

I think comparatively the 5N is easily worth more than they’re asking. But in reality it’s only worth what people are willing to pay. I leased mine for 2 years. As you said the next one will be even better so I plan on switching.
As far as missing features of US vehicles it all caught me by surprise after signing the lease. A number of them would have been a deal breaker. I even made a (incomplete) list of the things I feel cheated out of:
Free EA charging plan not included
    -missing cargo privacy cover
    -no moon roof
    -no rear seat 120V outlet
    -no Heads Up Display
    -no V2L adapter
Never the less I love the car and never see myself switching to a less powerful car. The excitement is endless so far.

Enthusiasts who live with 4 seasons rotate their tires with winter tires during cold months and go drifting in the snow 😉. Or as you said get all season tires and deal with drop in performance. You can always add additional cushion to the seat if it’s too firm for you. As far as moon roof and HUD goes, it’s a bummer if you like them, but the prices of the 5N in other markets that have them are significantly higher. Hyundai should have made them optional in the US. The 5N is hardly barebones BTW. I can’t think of any other EV or ICE vehicle with 650 hp with all the features, utility, and comfort for under $70k. I’m planning getting the 5N or 6N in the near future. I love Italian sports cars, but they are the most unreliable I’ve ever driven. I wish people stop stating I can’t justify $70k for a Hyundai. You’re stuck in the past and being a brand snob. Asses a car for what it is regardless of the brand. I will never buy another German car, especially BMW, because they nickel and dime you for everything and are some of the most unreliable cars.

Great video. I still want to drive one, and I know I'd love it - but there is too much risk in being an early adopter. These are going to see big discounts off msrp in my opinion, within the next 6 months ($5k off I'm sure). I know the I5N is considerably larger than the model 3 performance, but if you qualify for the tax credit, the new m3p is insane value at basically $20k less. Yes, the tesla has zero soul or passion compared to this, but thats a big gap in price. I5N has a very niche market - and I'm in it, and even still can't push myself to make the decision to take the leap - financially not worth the risk.

I haven’t driven the m3p yet but I know the I5N has multiple personalities with lots of character. The sounds makes you feel more engaged than without the sound. I can see Ford and Dodge copying this. Especially Dodge. Borla has an exhaust for the Mach E

I can't believe North American prices are that expensive. It doesn't make sense to not have a HUD. I thought of course it would be included. I'm Korean, and after watching your video, I went to the Hyundai website and used Build My Car to calculate an estimate. I have included all the possible options. Including all taxes and shipping costs, 82M won came out, which is 62k based on 1360 won/$1. Are tariffs expensive? Since there are no dealerships in Korea, we can buy with MSRP. Subsidies are not taken into account.

    • @PradigyMusicman

I'm not sure about tariffs on Korean EV Imports. The EV political landscape is sensitive as the US just did a 100% tariff on Chinese EVs last week.

This is a pretty decent and elaborate review bro. Loved listening to it! I'm about to put my order down for this car, just wanted to share my story, perhaps that will help others. So, I'm in the European market (Netherlands), so indeed, the HUD comes standard. The sun roof is actually the only option on the list, I will not select it, as it does not open and is just extra weight. I have a sun roof in my current car (VW Arteon Shooting Brake) and dont really see the benefit of it tbh. If I buy this car, it will actually be a business lease (leasing through the company I work for). That solves the whole "will it still be something worth after a while" issue. I trade it in after 4 years. Also, due to lease, it comes with winter tires, so that problem sort of solves itself. The fact that the seats are manual is totally fine for me. In Europe I guess fully electric seats with memory is still pretty much a luxury function, so I've never had it. Also, I'm the one doing most of the driving, so will hardly ever adjust the seat. I'm actually happy they chose this setup, because the reason it;s not electric is so that the chairs can be lower. With a relative high/big car, I'm happy they keep the seats as low as possible. I do agree with the fact that on a longer drive they might become a bit uncomfortable, have driven it for an hour and was also a bit on the fence... You mention: Not sure I would pay 70K for a Hyundai; what you failed to mention is that Albert Bierman (former BMW M specialist) and Tyrone Johnson (former Ford Performance VP who made the Drift mode on the Focus RS) built this car, so that's basically a BMW, Ford, Hyundai N mix up - indeed making it 3 cars in one. That is totally worth 70 K (73K Euro in Netherlands). Then; I was able to get it to drive in automatic gear shifting with the sound, so not the weird one gear thing you mentioned. Not sure how I did that though with a million features haha. Long story short: I understand most of your points. Some of them are not relevant for me due to the leasing option. Price wise, its a bit more expensive then my VW, but totally worth it looking at driving fun. It will be my Daily Driver. Ow btw, I'm picking the Ecotronic gray, as it looks stealthy, and I'm thinking I will sick of the blue after a while. Could you elaborate on they key thing you mentioned? Is it prone to get stolen in the US with some hacking tech? Thanks again for your review, loved every minute of it!

Hey thanks for the awesome response! I agree with you the lease is the way to go on this. I mention in the video that I have a truck and a GT, and I couldn't figure out which one to replace. For 70k, there are a lot of options for replacing my Maserati GT, even something like a manual Porsche would be preferred over the I5N to replace it. I think the long term play on EV is leasing as the smartest thing to do. As for 70k on a Hyundai, the fact that these things are not selling at all makes me pause. Remember my point about the dealer markup? They took 7k off the car after our first negotiation. I also didn't say in the video, but the dealer straight up told me "Hey this car is a one of one, and since it's limited, we're charging 7k more for it than MSRP". I did mention that I lost momentum for my purchase when they pushed that markup on me, and that's true. All the joy of driving the car made me realise "damn this is why people don't like dealerships"

    • @willemvermaak4388
      @willemvermaak4388 2 месяца назад +1

@@PradigyMusicman cheers for your answer! Yeah, the markup thing is very sad. I guess that’s not really a thing here, at least not for new cars at official dealers. They need to sell for the common price. Thank god for that, because indeed adding random numbers to the price should indeed be a turn off. I personally dislike EV’s because of the range anxiety, but looking at lease, there is no other car that offers this fun for the price, within my lease options. There is currently a 6
Month delivery time, our dealers here say they have sold some already. There are currently 15 in the Netherlands and an additional 100 will be delivered. I do expect all of them to sell.
Ordering mine tomorrow, will see what happens when it comes… haha

I wouldn’t pay more than 50k for this! More or fewer features don’t matter. It’s an EV, and no hate, but there are many combustion engine cars that are faster and sound better. This car is going to fail! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: they should put a reasonable price tag on it!
