I was hunting an old black only school downtown (1920ish) that had been sold at some point by the school system and turned into community apartments. Had to go through a board to detect the property. Once I started digging I realized the property probably sat vacant for awhile and the local homeless population had moved in and drank many, did I say many, beers. I must have literally dug 4-500+ screw off caps in the pursuit of something better. I call those things "Booze Clues". Just dig a target in the 80's range and guess which screw off type you have. LOL. You should make a zinger for win you dig one too. Anyhoo, I am a very focused and determined person and pressed on LOL. Eventually, after digging everything from buffalo nickels, to v nickels, to 1870's IHP's (73 and 74), civil war bullets, and even a kewl buster brown ring from the 1940's, I ended up finding a KG3 from 1772 under a huge oak. I ended up donating it to the Greensboro Museum. :). Sad thing is there is a resident that lives there in the building and I offered him to come out and detect with us and he wouldn't? I'm guessing he knew there were all those screw off lids out there and he didn't want anything to do with them? He told me he had lived there about 15 years and detected the property almost the whole time. He just didn't have the patience I guess or a Deus 2.
P.S. Did you see the Digstock events that are coming up? I've already got my ticket for the first one. I only live a couple hours from there. Hope to see you out there. This event is supposed to cover 2 different digstocks. Looking forward to the madness. :)
Lucky dog .Im telling you if you take a pencil and color in the coin and then wipe it off you Will see a bunch of details you can't see now I prefer carpenter pencil cuz you can really bear down on it and then when you're done it's just graphite it'll wash off Okay I can't wait to see what it is for real I see 1733
Theresa, I struggle with daily life. Metal detecting is one thing that I can go and do to escape and cope with daily life. I used to drink 20 to 30 beers a day and now I don't drink at all. It's a fun hobby that keeps your mind busy while you are detecting, thinking of cool places to detect, or researching what you brought home. It's a great hobby and is really good for the mind, soul and body! Set some realistic goals and dive in!
Thanks so much for sharing! It is definitely a workout for the body. And listening to the beeps does take total concentration. I'm totally up for doing it again! I'm very happy metal detecting has been so beneficial for you!
I have had two boys with autism come with me detecting. They love it! The one boy was able to detect on his own. I have him my simplex. He had a signal. I looked. It's a pop can I said. He didn't care. He then spent fifteen minutes recovering a pop can. His mom said he had the best day ever.
Theresa's enthusiasm is contagious! A completely different approach than typically see in a detecting video. An educated sense of wonder that I feel probably translates to her career dealing with such a misunderstood and difficult topic. Many families will benefit from the care she can provide. Thank you both! Edit now, Wow! Posted this before seeing the ending! Have been that parent. I lost my son last year. Graham had just turned 25. I didn't want to bring things down earlier, but after spending so much time trying so hard to keep him safe, I was lost , detecting and finding the things I liked to do was/is tough. Everything is different. Headphones on and digging holes helps me cope with loss and stress of work. Wow. Thank you both
Merrill, I have to say I was genuinely touched by you and Dr Theresa's video today. Thank you for helping share the "process" with the community. Being a scientist and a bit of a historian myself, this stuck so many chords. Like you, I am fortunate enough to have an opportunity to spend time with folks like Terry (Looking forward to your chat with him tomorrow) here on the Treasure Coast, and so many others who do this for the love of the hobby, not for the "get rich quick" mentality. Sure, the videos with the treasure bring in clicks, but it is truly about the adventures. Congrats on joining the 1600's club, and I subscribed to Dr Lyon's channel today. Bless you, Howie.
Thank you for your very thoughtful comment! There is so much to metal detecting that applies to life. I learned a lot that day and by all the comments here. Thanks for subscribing!
Passion and more passion. 😍 Definitely a person I can learn from and signpost families too. Thanks for that Merrill. (I've also learnt a lot from you) Swansea, South Wales. UK.
Casper metal detecting here... I wouldve been very excited at the spoon handle you found...if complete it would have been most valuable find of the day it is commonly known as a "trefid spoon" - I think that type of spoon would have been brought over from England from 1660 into early 1700s....Ive found like 5 handle parts similar to yours and 3 bowls - i was lucky to find a totally complete one that luckily got missed by the plows in a farm field - its probably best relic in my collection congrats on coin finds- continued good luck
I love the comfort level between the two of you. It's obvious you have known each other for a long time. Both of you have a love and dedication for what you each do and a mutual respect. Made me happy listening to the banter . Finds were a bonus. Thank you
I laughed so hard when she asked you... so what do you think of when you metal detect... errr Men like to think of nothing😂 I could litrally here your brain ticking over.
Absolutely awsome video, you are an ambassador to our hobby, keep up the great work your doing. Honestly one of the best metal detecting videos I have watched. Oh and awsome find lol.
Im happy to see videos again like this from you Merrill, you inspired me to start detecting a year ago and its been a battle of patience and persistence ever since but Ive finally gotten to a place where Im getting the good stuff. Also a very honest revelation from your friend Dr Lyons that I think we can all appreciate with sincerity. Most of all, your insights and analogies comparing metal detecting to life how it takes earnest, unrelenting dedication to keep swinging and digging although you may not be finding much of anything after hundreds of targets recovered. But that one signal out of 500 makes it all worth it and keeps you going for the next 500 signals to dig. Lets see more videos like this, private permissions, parks, beaches, wherever!
Detecting this property was such a treat! The owners are great! Relentless determination and the joy of the process are essential to actually enjoying metal detecting.
Merril, I have enjoyed your work and art of this hobby, but this video tops the top one you have ever posted. It truly touches the soul, and your group of friends.. so inspiring. Thank you Merril,,, 🙏 😅
great to invite a friend. More fun to chat... and her n00b questions are great. I hope she gets hooked. You should take her mudlarking too. She would love it.
Congratulations. It took me about 15-16 years to find my first 1600s coin, got another one 2 years after that. In Europe. Finding one in the US must be really super extra special.
Congratulations on joining the 1600's club! That's quite a milestone for a detectorist in the eastern half of North America. Fingers crossed you will find a 1500's coin, soon! Even here in northern Europe it took me almost three years to find my first medieval and my first ancient coin, they are not as easy to find as some lucky guys make it look on the internet.
Did he not join the 1700's club?? Do you guys do it differently than here in England. That dated coin would have been back in the 1700's. We are currently in the 21st century, we just came out of the 20th?? 😮
What a great episode! Having her as a scientist come along and ask such great questions was very valuable for us! She is also going to be a new resource for me and my family, we so much appreciate you introducing her!!! Also....Congrats on the 1600's coin!!!
That's a absolutely fantastic find Merrill 😍 Huge Congrats 👏 I subscribed to your friends channel as I have two grandchildren with autism 😢 Maybe I can learn how to understand them better. 🙂 HH and take care.
I saw a shovel on the ground that looked like a sneeboer.... I purchased one for $200 and it's been an excellent metal detecting shovel Ash handle and shaft with excellent German work on the shovel
Never mind I saw it was a metal handle..lol. should check them out if you have a chance they're excellent for a handcrafted shovel and I'm surprised with the durability
You have the most entertaining and helpful sites, probably my favorite site for detecting, it was satisfying to see how much your friend enjoyed the hunt . Merrill, great video. The mystery item was the slider pin out of a dog leash snap. The fat part is where you place your thumb to slide the pin back to unleash from the dog collar or whatever you have the snap attached too. I have found one just like that, and when you hold it next to a working leash snap you see the connection fairly quickly. Just my opinion on the item you found. Happy hunting.
Congrats Merrill! Looks like a worn out Shilling, possibly a William the third? (1695~1701), Need to take a good look at under a microscope. Date would be one of the lion shields, half the date on the left and the other half on the right. Bring it with you to the IMDA digfest, maybe i'll dig out my scope and take a gander at it. :)
