The way you respect your friend for finding this site and you explaining how you will not go back without him or his permission, I find that so HONORABLE. You’re a great guy!
I ran into Chris this morning at one of the beaches about a half a mile north of that spot. He told me about it but like you, I too won’t go to that spot without him because yeah that’s his spot and the fact that you made it very well known on the video that that’s how things are supposed to be good job promoting the sport and how to be respectful. Keep up the good work
It is so wonderful that Chris thought of you to share this rare occurrence. It also shows the quality of your values. Some people wouldn’t be such a gentleman to only go out with him or having his permission. I have only been watching for about a month but am very impressed with your honesty and the wonderful things you do for others without payment. God bless you and your friend.
Lido Key Casino was built in 1940 which is not too far away from here. The concrete piers weren’t even there until more recent. Locals have told me back in the 60’s the water line was by the end of the pier. Maybe someone fell or dropped some rolls getting off a boat after winning at the casino. There were steamboats that ran from Sarasota to Tampa back in that time frame too. Either way it was a bucket lister and I’m loving everyone’s guesses on where the merc mystery pile came from. Always a blast hanging with ya and nobody else I could think of who’d I want in on it for all the good you do🤘👊

I’m curious to know why you are only getting one at a time. Not complaining but the dimes you are finding are so close together, you’d think a scoop of more than one would happen.
Hey but even though you were wrong about this being a gambling casino, it was a night club, with food and drink for sale, so maybe there were some rolls of dimes lost by the management. I remember the Lido Casino from my childhood, by then it was no longer in business as a night club but just used as a beach pavilion building. It was incredibly gorgeous and such a shame that it got torn down for no good reason.
I am thrilled that you had such a wonderful day. You also have a wonderful friend. You SO deserve this. You have found many precious things for people who thought they'd never see them again. This is your thankyou.
Well done Shawn. What an awesome friend Chris is to invite you to hunt that spot with him. Then to have the integrity to adhere to the detectorists code, Respect!
The more I think about it that was probably in somebody’s jar in their house, and as the water was receding back to the Gulf after the storm probably got sucked in there from there
@@DetectFlorida, when did you actually dig those dimes? So cool. I’m happy for you that your friend invited you on this treasure hunt with him. Only time I've seen that many Mercs at once, was in Louisville, Ky. when a friend found a roll of them in the sidewalk median off Bardstown Rd. The paper was gone but the roll was still stacked against each other. 2 were 1916's No D.
The kind of hunt that can become your happy place. When life gets you down, you can go to the happy place in your mind. I’ve got a couple of those I fall back on. Congrats and hit that place hard with Chris before the tides reclaim.
In the 1950s I grew up in a beach area which we spent much of our lives on. An engineer friend decided to make lots of two seater catermeran style floating pedal operated machines. They were a lot of fun to hire. He ran a fish and chip shop there and hired these out. I live 2000km away now but wish I could go and metal detect there. Even in the sand dunes but it is all gone now and multi million dollar homes across the beach front. Changing world
I'm a coin collector and a metal detector and you guys just had the DREAM hunt. The only thing better would be if you were finding gold doubloons from the 1700s or Morgan or Trade dollars in this quantity. Great fun watching this video. Thank you!
Maybe there was a ship wreck in that area, and that's why there are all those Mercury dimes. Congrats to you and your friend. It's very exciting just to watch this video.
This made me laugh. I remember my hunting buddy say to me once, there’s too many coins here let’s move. 😳. What? We wanted gold rings. It was distracting. The most concentrated bunch I ever found was where there used to be a Coke machine on the boardwalk of a yacht club. Cokes used to be ten cents when we had silver money. People drop them and they rolled and fell through the spaces of the boardwalk into the water.
It seems that science is at play here. Coins get dropped...each tide basically stratified the heavier coins to the bottom. They hit a dense layer (probably compacted shell). Hurricane comes along and rips the upper sand layers off (including lighter coins) and thus exposes the heaviest coins. Congrats to you both on the outstanding find.
True. In average circulated condition, the 1916-D, 1921, and 1921-D are the key dates. All the others are worth melt, or just a little more. In higher grade, the early mintmarked dates are worth a premium.
Amazing hoard you guys got upon there! Speaking for someone with many years experience in the hobby, my best guess, given all of the coins are only Mercs, is someone either tossed or lost several rolls of Mercuries back in the mid to late 40s. Whether, as one viewer suggests, there was once an old pier there, or they got tossed or fell out there from some long forgotten reason, it would seem to make sense. There is an old time detectorist in my neck of the woods that once found intact rolls of Mercuries at an old fairgrounds near where some carnival booths once stood. So these things do happen, but are incredibly rare. Huge congrats!
I totally respect your integrity regarding that this is "Chris's" spot and you won't go back without his knowledge and permission. Also, days like that are what makes metal detecting the most fun and keep you in the hobby. Up in Oregon, we don't have a huge amount of history, so any silver or old coin is a good day. We tend to count wheaties found and reset each time we find a silver. The ratio is really close to 10:1. My best wheatie day was 26, and 13 of them were in one small 5" hole 8" deep. The other 13 were scattered in a 5' x 8' area not even a few feet from the first 13. I did find 3 silvers that day in the same basic area as well, so the ratio supports. To your friend Chris, great job finding that sweet spot and allowing us to watch your excitement with you as you find each one. You each need to make a nice wall mounted frame of your full load out of the area. ❤
So at my local beach we used to find a lot of silver coins before they started renourishment. Turns out it was a WW2 gun emplacement. Most of the coins were dated just before or during the war.
That's quite incredible. I guess the density of the mercs makes them sink to a specific depth in the sand, and then the hurricane removed the sand to that specific level. It'd be so interesting to do a deep dig in the sand, over a huge area, like an archeologically study and see what's at all the different levels.
This is truly amazing! I used to live in Florida, and I am just amazed at this find! This is way before I was before I was born, the story behind this is really awesome if you could figure out what it was. ❤ Great find you guys! Thanks for sharing!!!
It sounds like probably back in the 60s when a hurricane came through probably knocked down a house that was near that area and the guys dime coin collection fell out and got buried? That is awesome finds. Keep it coming.
I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge while you are hunting. The details how’s and why’s of what is happening during your hunt is valuable to beginners.
That was a great hunt! It's amazing what is beneath the beach, only to be discovered when conditions are perfect. Kudos to your buddy for sharing his spot with you, and thanks for the lesson on ethics that you gave in your video. *Congratulations, and the utmost respect for your sense of ethics, honor, and respect for Chris's friendship!* The guys in South Carolina, *John, Mike, Gary, Phillip, and formerly Charlie,* from *Dig that Beep* probably *consistently* find more silver coins on land than anyone else that is posting metal detectorist videos on RUclips. Their success can be attributed to hundreds of hours of online and in-person searching of public records to find new pieces of publicly owned South Carolina land that formerly, or currently, contained/contains buildings from the era when silver War nickels, dimes, quarters, and half-dollars were in the pockets and purses of every man, woman, and child in America. They have had some incredible days detecting the sites of old private homes, churches, schools, and fairgrounds when they have collectively found in excess of 20 silver coins. Those days are rare, and can't even begin to compare to your's and Chris's collective total of just Mercury dimes. *Finding 125 Mercury dimes in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico on a west coast Florida Beach over a 3-day period of time is truly a once in a lifetime event.* *Congratulations, again!*

I don't know, Shawn, When those people asked what you're looking for I wouldn't have gone into such detail. Because who's to say they're not gonna come back with their own metal detectors after you guys leave. I would have just said. "I'm looking for lost treasure. Have a great day!"
LMAO you know how much a detector like his cost? You think those people have detectors like that lying around or are going to go buy ones like that. 🤦♂
I wasn't too worried!! Spots like this don't typically stay exposed for very long. This happened right after the hurricane and was quickly covered up with sand. I wanted to get back out there, but it was already too late :(
seems like rolls of dimes (like those frm banks)? May have fallen off a boat in transit going up or down the coast? Or possibly a ferry or water taxi operated along the coastline, and it cost a dime to ride, and there would be container for all the dimes as people got on. Maybe one such ferry sunk or capsized. All the dimes in the container would disperse. Hahaha fun thinking up stories to explain the dimes!
Amazing! I love post hurricane detecting. My grandmother used to tell us as kids that "it's an ill wind that doesn't blow somebody some good" I believe this is what she meant. Great hunt, thanks for sharing.
Guys, check those 1945 merc's for no mint mark with full bands (look it up). They're worth 10k or better if mint state which it seems some of those are.
amazing shit guys!!!.........CLEARLY there was an old pier south of that area from the 30s and 40s that had one armed bandits a plenty.....it was either totaled during a storm or was demoed...... my guess is the former because some of the slot machines were ripped from their mounts on the pier and strewn in the ocean....again, south of where you are finding the coins. this is the only viable explanation for the period coins ALL being mercs.....and no rosies or quarters!!! so as this last hurricane went through, it churned up a band of the lost coins from the 30s and 40s and you lucky dogs stumbled across the bootie//well done!!
What probably happened there is back in the 40's and 50's there were many open air dance pavilions on beaches. They all had dime pinball machines. That beach likely extended out that far before a hurricane destroyed the pavilion scattering the pinball machines and jukebox. When the water receded the torn up machines were recovered, but the dimes were scattered under the sand. Afer years of hurricanes and erosion your buddy found the site ! Lucky ya'll 😊
Thanks for sharing this moment. Only better feeling than finding a pocket is sharing it with a friend. Another great story you’ll tell the grandkids.😊 Kudos Chris.👍🏻
Wow! All those Mercs! Congratulations on you guys finding all of them. I have 2 Mercs and I don’t plan on getting rid of them either. I’ll let my kids figure out what to do with them after I’m gone.😅😊
Wow, what an amazing find! So kind of your buddy to ask you to come with him. The dimes and your friendship with your fellow metal detector are both very rare. May God bless you both. This was an amazing video.
Those kiddie glasses do suit you! As methodical as you are, it's frustrating not to find a specific item. So glad you had so much fun with your friend. Most especially the respect between you. Beautiful!
Haha thank you!! While its frustrating to not find something sometimes, I know that it's likely still there and it'll pop up again eventually. I just hope that I'm there when it does!
With all the various dates on the Merc dimes could be from someone purchasing them at a coin shop and accidentally lost them in the surf years ago. Great find guys! Love your comments to what you are doing.
By the time these coins were circulating, gold coins were illegal to use. President Roosevelt ended private ownership of gold, except for certain circumstances, in 1933. Also, there were no 1933 dimes (or nickels or quarters) made. I love finding spots like this. Enjoy!
Thanks, Shawn, I needed a good story today. So glad Chris contacted you to share in the fun. Loved the pink sunglasses and the reminder of the proper protocol of detecting. Hope you guys went back and found a whole lot more. You deserve it! My crazy theory is that it was a bag of dimes from a heist at a gambling hall and the crooks couldn't be bothered with 'chump change'. Good that you two know the value of Mercury Dimes and, by the way, some are now worth far more than just $2.00 each!
Thank you! This was so much fun. I wish the good fortune lasted longer!! I was hopeful to make a second video, but the area dried up and filled back in with sand :(
Congrats! Vending machines and games in the 40s and 50s where 5 or 10 cents. You might have found where somebody lost a bag of coins from emptying out vending or pinball machines.😉
The way you respect your friend for finding this site and you explaining how you will not go back without him or his permission, I find that so HONORABLE. You’re a great guy!

Amazing! I love post hurricane detecting. My grandmother used to tell us as kids that "it's an ill wind that doesn't blow somebody some good" I believe this is what she meant. Great hunt, thanks for sharing.
I'm from Texas ,and I would love it if you would wear protective eye gear ,like a really good pair of sunglasses !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's a good and true friend, and you must be a trusted friend for him to share his good fortune with you
Unbelievable. Oh the stories you’ll be able to tell. Whatever the situation was that brought these coins to that area is a true mystery!
Loved it he said someone robbed a bank. Amazing find guys. Woe.
I have found 2 Mercs since starting the hobby in March. Very exciting and rewarding experience
Hurricane fodder nearing 100 year old mark. Awesome recovery! Bravo Zulu!
That is just insane. I'd be going back there after every storm.
Check for a bank robbery in that area during the depression! Perhaps a pawn shop that got hit during the hurricane. Awesome respectful buddies. 🇨🇦👏
Guys, check those 1945 merc's for no mint mark with full bands (look it up). They're worth 10k or better if mint state which it seems some of those are.
Damn!! Thanks Steve! Guess I need to send in a dozen or so of those 45’s that I have with full bands 😅
Can’t believe so many old dimes in one area. Surprised they are in such good shape still
amazing shit guys!!!.........CLEARLY there was an old pier south of that area from the 30s and 40s that had one armed bandits a plenty.....it was either totaled during a storm or was demoed...... my guess is the former because some of the slot machines were ripped from their mounts on the pier and strewn in the ocean....again, south of where you are finding the coins. this is the only viable explanation for the period coins ALL being mercs.....and no rosies or quarters!!! so as this last hurricane went through, it churned up a band of the lost coins from the 30s and 40s and you lucky dogs stumbled across the bootie//well done!!
Well this certainly an enjoyable video . I got so excited for you.
That's a HUGE deal. I haven't seen that many mercs since our annual detecting group hunt.
Would love to see some high-quality macro shots of the finds at the end of the video like @DetectorComparisons does.
That’s awesome find and friend to bring you in on it.
Thanks for sharing this moment. Only better feeling than finding a pocket is sharing it with a friend. Another great story you’ll tell the grandkids.😊 Kudos Chris.👍🏻
I was really happy that he invited me to experience this! It's such an incredible occurrence that I'll probably never experience again
Wow! All those Mercs! Congratulations on you guys finding all of them. I have 2 Mercs and I don’t plan on getting rid of them either. I’ll let my kids figure out what to do with them after I’m gone.😅😊
Nice friend - so fun to see all the dimes 😊
"FREAKIN PULLTAB" LOL
Someone must have dropped a canvas bag of 1,000 dimes long ago (I believe they came in bags of 1,000) back in the day.
THAT'S MY BEST GUESS, LOST EARLY '40 S.
My first silver was a 1924 Mercury found at the site of a burned house. It looks like it was dropped the day it was minted.
Greetings from Poland 😊.
Wow, what an amazing find! So kind of your buddy to ask you to come with him. The dimes and your friendship with your fellow metal detector are both very rare. May God bless you both. This was an amazing video.
Thank you so much!!! This was a really incredible experience!
What if after WWII there was a ship carrying money for some reason and a bag of dimes fell overboard? Very coolant and strange. Great video!
That's just crazy! Wow...fun times!
Awesome day! 1916 D is the holy grail on mercs!
With all the various dates on the Merc dimes could be from someone purchasing them at a coin shop and accidentally lost them in the surf years ago. Great find guys! Love your comments to what you are doing.
There are no words WOW !!
Love this! You are a truly great guy,Shawn, and your friend,Chris, too!
Thank you!
By the time these coins were circulating, gold coins were illegal to use. President Roosevelt ended private ownership of gold, except for certain circumstances, in 1933. Also, there were no 1933 dimes (or nickels or quarters) made. I love finding spots like this. Enjoy!
Congratulations!!! Could not have happened to a nicer guy!
Thank you!
I was hopeful to make a second video, but the area dried up and filled back in with sand :(
@@DetectFlorida When the next hurricane hits, you'll have to get right back there!
Congrats! Vending machines and games in the 40s and 50s where 5 or 10 cents. You might have found where somebody lost a bag of coins from emptying out vending or pinball machines.😉
