I take a look at what debt I have and come up with a plan to tackle my debt. Yes sharing struggles can help others not fall into the same trap. It is great if you can learn from your mistakes but it is better to learn from other’s mistakes. I can overcome it by looking at finances and cut down on unnecessary spending. I’m currently at 99%.

Keep it to yourself. Be willing to imward focused and understand you are not going to die tomorrow if you occur high debt, your life is not over, its not the end of the world. There is a social stigma and judgement towards debt. There is a sacrifice to be paid if you ever want to push the limits of your capability and to learn life lessons. I rather slowly and digeliently work towards my debt in silence than seek others opinions and have that judgement hang over me. In any case, be willing to work and be frugal with your spending habits. Maintain a great or decent credit score, maintain a good payment history with your cards even if you are in the trenches and use credit limit increases on some cards or secured cards to start from the bottom againsl to rebuild your credit. Save money and even do day trading to help.

Someone in one comment thread down here saying $20k ISNT shocking as a number in terms of debt has me reeling. I am shook I am bamboozled.
Edit: okay didn’t think I’d have to qualify this BUT I wasn’t talking about student loans which everyone knows can get very high. We could go around and around in circles all day about ways people get into debt which just is not the point. Because regardless of how or why that’s still $ 20k that is completely gone, it’s not yours anymore and will keep growing through interest. Do you not think $20k is a lot of money generally? If it’s a lot of money to have, why isn’t it a lot of money to lose?

Agree. It does take courage. And to create social media, there has to be the creation of things to grab our attention, so things are going to be larger than life.
If she posts and says she’s $2K in credit card debt, in 2025 Amerìca, nobody’s going to bat an eye at that. But to post a larger problem? That’s going to get some view... Things have to be big to gain movement in this social media world and it’s going to take some courage to put those very big things out there. Agree

I think this is where a lot of us are missing the mark because What we REALLY need to do criticize is the culture that makes consumption seem desirable … the platforms that enable people to go into debt with the tap of a finger… one has to have a ridiculous amount of self control to NOT fall into these consumerist traps. We are all seeking cheap dopamine and the system pulls you into a never ending cycle.

This is all stupid. 20K of credit card debt is not shocking, it's not something to shame anyone over and it can happen to anyone. Thats the problem with this girl who makes videos about peoples failures. The woman responding to her needs to shut up respectfully if she doesnt want people to comment and Respond with criticism or negativity about her situation she openly sharing, but the main problem here is americans have their heads up their asses thinking severe struggle is a character flaw and someone is a worthless loser for falling on hard times. This black girl probably never came within inches of losing her life, losing her home, losing her job, losing a fanily member, having health issues, having to care for or oversee someone that is not her child, have to struggle with kids or have a serious health issue. All of these factors paired mental health issues can result in racking up 20K of credit card debt. I myself have never collectively ever reached that amount cause I leverage my debts with loans. Loans and some cards all together? Yeah, I have 22-24K debt myself. Not 20k on cards alone so while that is a bit much.. its nothing to shame this woman over. Shame people for credit card debt if they using it irresponsibly for frivolity and not for necessity

Also same people like this youtuber talking shit about people situations they share on tiktok to vent / for awareness, shes probably the same person who end up on those true crime 20/20 abd dateline shows being a victim or dead cause she wasnt willing to take risks and bet on herself to get out of a dangerous situation even if it meant possibly running her credit, savings and all her money at her disposal including credit cards to save her life and escape a killer or abuser. This is an extreme example but think about it. Do you know how many poor women who had a bright future who were good citizens and people are DEAD now cause they didnt think or want to think about charging a trip to that card or using their credit cards to help get out of a bad situation? This has nothing to do with the video but think about it. I dont encourage debt for anyone. I mean common sense but there will come a rare time when you may have no choice to rely on a credit or charge card to save your life in conjuction with your own money and savings. Now, if someone on tiktok said they were 20K in debt on credit cards cause they were dealing an abusive partner who came close to killing them and they were using the card to survive, would we have the same criticism and dsidain?
Seriously think about it and dont tell me this is ridiculous or cant happen cause it can. Debt is debt no matter how its occured and I believe everyone needs to keep their business to themselves but also stop speaking on other people situations.

Honestly I'm shocked how many close friends I know are in debt and so casual about it. And I have friends who have good paying jobs, some have regular jobs, doesn't matter what jobs they have, they all racked up cc debt, car payment debt, vacation debt, concert debt, in general a lifestyle debt, all for 'living in the now' 'in the moment' or whatever. I used to be irresponsible with my spending in my 20s, thank goodness my debt was not more than 8k, but it still stressed me out and I forced myself to change my habits to get rid of all my debt. Also having a baby changed my priorities and mentality. Two years later, no car payment, my debt is down to $4k, I live frugally and save cash for stuff I need. I'm looking into a high yield savings account and open a trust for my daughter. Financial literacy is important! It's never to late to change! I'm still learning but I'm definitely in a better position now than I ever was. It's a freeing feeling. Anyone can do it.

If you don’t like criticism, don’t put your content on social media. Being a good content creator requires having a thicker skin, because there are a bunch of “posterior orifices” out there that will leave mean comments just to be a pr1ck/b1tch. I am glad that the original creator is seeing the value of her post (it is valuable) - it’s a cautionary tale to share so others don’t make the same mistakes that she did.

I love how graceful you are in all of your videos. So many finance creators are SO shamey and blamey, and I find that super demotivating. Tough love works for some, but not for me. I need gentle love.
As for the people here who are saying this gal was "using her ADHD as an excuse":
1.) What a PRIVILEGE to not have a mental illness that interferes with your life in tangible ways. Everyone's all about ~mental health awareness~ until actual mental illness enters the chat. But see, that's exactly what makes mental illness an ILLNESS - it diminishes your ability to function in society. Many, if not MOST people with mental illnesses, struggle with finances in one way or another.
2.) Impulsive spending, difficulties with long-term planning, struggling with delayed gratification, and using "retail therapy" as a coping mechanism are actually all well-established consequences of ADHD in adults, soooo...
3.) She offered her ADHD as an explanation, not an excuse. An excuse would sound like "well, I have ADHD, so I can't help it. I can never change, I'm hopeless, so I'm just gonna keep on doing what I'm doing, consequences be damned." That's not what she did. She *literally* took accountability for her actions, and is actively working on fixing her situation.
4.) Why do you care? I can understand getting frustrated if someone in your life blames their mental illness when they directly hurt you. But you don't know this gal. Her situation doesn't affect you in ANY way, shape, or form. So, genuinely, why does it bother you that she has acknowledged how her mental health has impacted her relationship with money?
Y'all are acting like crabs in a bucket. Putting this woman down, when all she did was acknowledge that she's made a mess, and she's ready to clean it up. Do you feel better?

Kala if you are reading this, keep it up girl. People don’t talk enough about this stuff. I’ve been there, we paid off our debt. Talk about it, people want to hide their dirty laundry but as a country we need to talk about this stuff. We can’t fix it if we don’t talk about it. The only debt I have now after being 60k in consumer debt is my mortgage, I have 6-7 years left.

Aye I hope she pays off her debt too! I’m working on paying mine off myself! In the original video though the ADHD portion seemed more like an afterthought but in this video she lead with the ADHD part like that’s what the whole original video was about when it wasn’t (at least I didn’t interpret it that way). I hate to say it but there are mean people everywhere and sharing your life online comes with the risk of people saying negative things about you. Your original reaction was polite and didn’t show her in a negative way but if you wanna be like a content creator then negativity comes with it unfortunately.

People end up in debt for a variety of reasons that aren't just consumerism issues. But In this society having credit card debt like that is not typically a positive thing and is very judged regardless of origin of debt. Criticism is unavoidable when you put it all out on the Internet. Best not to air your laundry in the open if don't want the criticism. Paying off debt is not easy, it's hard work. I hope she gets it knocked out.

I wonder if there are some statistics on the amount of personal debt that isn’t student loans that nurses have. I know more nurses that are in debt through credit cards, upside down car loans, and plastic surgery bills than I know that don’t have those problems. It’s wild, and they make great money. Always living above their means.

I mean impulsively is a symptom of ADHD. People who have impulsive tendencies tend to make poor decisions. Too many people in general think wealth = spending. But everyone I know is rich, and no one spends like that. It's a shame. Nurses make good money too. Some comments sections have even brought me to tears. Like why is everyone so angry and hateful !😣😭 I’ve even banned myself from reading comments at times. Feels like the ADHD excuse is a shield that's easy to hide behind. Yeah, it can influence your behavior but if she's aware of her diagnosis, she's working on herself and eat her described medication she should be able to make better choices.
If you have a diagnosis and you don't do anything to change your behavior you can't use it as a excuse.
I don't know her situation but I'm personally tired of the "but muh X diagnosis" and all of a sudden you're untouchable and can't be criticized.

A lot of these people are using their terrible “how did I get myself in this situation? 🙄” content for engagement and to parlay it into a job they really want; to be a content creator and get free stuff. Do I think many people are bad with money and in terrible financial situations and truly want to get better? Yes. Do I think those are typically the people who go on TikTok making a 60 part series and encouraging people to come along the journey with them? NO. Those people either don’t actually want to get better or aren’t in as bad of situations as they say. Because I can guarantee you, a year from now, they’ll still be “trying” to understand the concept of saving and not over spending or still trying to set up a 401k. These concepts aren’t difficult. You either want to do it and you do it or you don’t.

Americans are typically one little accident, appliance failure, or sickness away from debt at all times. I have had horrible things happen to me and i just charged it with my credit (because i have excellent credit) with zero knowledge of how i was going to pay it off and Ive managed to pay it off. No diss to you miss, don't use the excuse as ADHD, because if always shits the fan, you will always blame your ADHD of uncontrolled spending and feels that you will always be trapped. Instead of having several things, etc, maybe consider having a therapy first, to control the urge, be disciplined. Or change your environment or the people you surround with.
