I used to resent Plugger for breaking the all time goal record against my team, but now I've found a brand new appreciation for him. That freakish 91 season of his is one of those things that you look back on in disbelief, especially compared to how far goalkicking has fallen from those highs of the nineties.
The amazing thing about Plugger, particularly in the Saints days, was how many goals he would kick in the first half of games. You could guarantee if he kicked ten he would have at least seven of them by half time. It is scary to imagine how many he would have kicked if fully fit and committed. I attended a few games at Moorabbin and my strongest memories are of a section of die hard fans who sat in a section called the Animal Pit or Animal Cage or something similar. These supporters were truly hardcore and to walk in there in a Collingwood jumper would have been an act of suicide.
One of the things I really regret not exploring was the Moorabbin atmosphere, I'd read bits and pieces about it but not being around for it, or being part of the St Kilda culture, meant I didn't have any real idea how hectic it was. Would have loved to be at the ground in its peak when Plugger came to town.
It was a party when plugger played the 80’s gave us not much too cheer about but when this amazing footballer turned up and started dominating the league it was great times on a Saturday afternoon I had Carlton supporting mates who’d rather come to Moorabbin with me too watch plugger than go watch their own team
God I can't imagine what it'd be like getting on a train to Moorabbin to see Plugger put 12 past an opponent. I really wish the suburban home grounds weren't ditched - the atmosphere of Marvel or Waverley couldn't possibly replace a hostile home crowd cheering Lockett on
The footage looked absolutely incredible. 26,000 sounded like 50,000. I understand why the AFL consolidated everything into Marvel, but they sure lost a lot of personality doing it
It still fascinates me how the greatest goalkicker of the AFL was able to do so in unsuccessful teams. I wonder if it helped him (being sole focus in a forward line) or hindered him (lack of quality delivery outside of Harvey).
The thug Gary Ablett cleaned up Nathan Burke and David grant after they were so good in the first quarter that was it for the saints no bench late in the game
Using the defence the ground knocked out the play not my elbow. Is like using the defence. The bullet coming out of the gun is what killed them instead of me using the gun to kill them.
@thegaz-man Can you please make a Video about the Brendan Fevola years at Carlton. I think it'll be a interesting watch especially if you make it just like this Tony Lockett St Kilda video. 🙏
@@thegaz-man You implied that Hudson kept Lockett out so that he wouldn’t break his goal kicking record. Steve Malaxos fell on Lockett’s back in the pre season game. It was a serious injury Lockett received. Both Peter Hudson and Ken Sheldon were 100% dedicated to the Saints. I don’t understand why they selected Lockett each week and withdraw him… probably to keep the opposition guessing. It was agony for the supporters.

I feel the same way about guys like Fevola, Gehrig and Hall. Those guys were freaks, and the tall forward of today is nowhere near as exciting.
You are criminally underrated. How do you only have 600 subs!?
Thanks! Tbh I'm just amazed to see this many people watching me ramble on about footy haha

Bernie Quinlan put the moz on Plugger.
My bad, Peter McKenna was doing most of the games I've covered in the 90s and I got mixed up
Ken Sheldon gave the Saints discipline and a winning culture.
He turned things around for sure, wish I had more time to talk about him. There's just so many stories to tell with the Saints.
@@thegaz-man You gave more air time to Graham Gellie than Sheldon.
We never asked " Did st Kilda win ? ", we asked " how many did Lockett get ? "

I was at that final. Brownless and Hocking were too good. David Grant was also injured.
Buddha is pretty underrated for mine, very handy player. Sainters were unlucky, they had a chance to go all the way.
Me too great game of football brownless 8.5 plugger 9.3 amazing day our saints didn’t win but arrived as a club

Exactly!
@@thegaz-manA bit like The 12th Man's "the Tony Lockett headbutting incident" (Caven).

It's an interesting idea for sure! Will definitely look into it!
Thanks mate 👍
Fevola lol
Lay off Ricky Nixon. Seconds thoughts, don’t.🤣
That comment about Peter Hudson was so wrong.
How do you mean?

I don't think he did imply that, I think he was suggesting that the coincidence was actually the footy gods taunting both of them
