- In the 1960s, the St Kilda Saints were a powerhouse. Before that, though, they were the VFL's Invisible Men. In this series, the Gaz-man celebrates St Kilda's 150th birthday by delving deep into the fascinating history and insane stories of the Saints. In this video, we cover the Saints of the 30s, 40s and 50s, and how the Saints found their identity and the spirit required to win - whilst meeting the best player who will never make the Hall of Fame.

As a saints fan, fully believed you when you said Mohr got 5 when he needed 6 for the 100 🤣
so happy that Dave McNamara saw the saints win grand final, imagine the feeling
Only just snuck it in, too - Saints did it just in time. Would have been everything to him.
I'm hoping to make a standalone vid on Big Dave toward the end of the year, absolutely fascinated by his career.
Love these historical videos and find them informative and amusing. Bit of a fact check though. The video mentions Ian Drake's great knowledge of the TFL in recruiting Stewart, Baldock and Howell. Stewart was the only player recruited from the southern Tasmanian TFL. Howell was recruited from the northern NTFA while Baldock was recruited from the north western NWFU. I am able to recall this because I am old and possibly due to having a second brain.
Thanks!
Yeah the TFL comment was a product of my lack of knowledge of the Tassie system, glad that you've added a bit of detail and accuracy!
If I was new to the AFL and didn't have a team, this series would make me a diehard saints fan. Love it 💗
Thank you so much!
Subject matter made me reach for a knife (I grabbed a butter knife. Typical.) but the narration was hilarious. Keep him on your books.
this is actually such a crazy video to find, bill young is my grandfather and i literally knew nothing about what he did in the saints this was so good to beable to watch
That's incredible! Be proud of him, he was such a unique player and an important one - really laid the foundations for Daicos, Brereton and other small guys to become game-breakers, and I'm so glad I could help you learn a bit more about him!
Brilliant
Gaz, I think the Saints have channeled their inner Killigrew this season, nobody is (right now) laughing at St Kilda
Big Alan would be proud for sure.
Technically, the Coleman medal was first awarded in 1981, and the winners after 1955 were retroactively referred to as Coleman medallists sometime in the 2000s if I recall.
That's correct, but much like Verdun Howell's retroactive Brownlow, I had to balance detail with the flow of the story. Plus, I kinda forgot to mention it in VO 🤣
Absolutely amazing seeing just how petty and conflict-ridden the VFL club committees were. My Demons were fucked for decades after the MCC heads got a little annoyed at Norm Smith and decided to fire him.
Boy am I glad those days are over....
Great series btw; can't wait to see just how the Saints survived the 80s.
Thanks! There was a lot of committee stuff I had to leave out too, it seemed like a total nightmare
The 80s Saints are a great story, though
My pre-conception of how the Saints survived the 80s: THERE’S ONLY ONE TONY LOCKETT! ONE TONY LOCKETTTT!
When will we see part three?
I'm hoping for the first weekend of May. Gather Round kinda blew out my schedule so it might be later, but will be sometime in May.
@@thegaz-man I'm looking forward to it.
