Frankly, I prefer THAT OVA over Mania Adventures. And I LOVED Mania Adventures. I love Tyson Hesse works, but for some reason I would love if he manages to make a full animated series based on OVA with voice acting and all after Mania.
(edit) To those who think that I'm fucking dumb yes, I am aware that anime is a type of cartoon, I just call the Japanese cartoons anime so I don't get people or others confused as to what I'm talking about. That and it's an artstyle different from ours. It's sad when a Japanese movie/OVA has better music then a child's cartoon...*looking at you Sonic Underground*
a purple dragon I mean since its a "movie" it makes more sense for them to work harder to make better music and animation...sonic underground was just for kids who either never seen sonic and rhose who had an interest in him
ViviSectia true but many people make a general distinction between "Cartoon" as something like say...Loony Tunes, Adventure Time and Teen Titans Go from America or other countries vs "Anime" strictly from Japan like say...Excel Saga, Hokuto no Ken, and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. They all are drawn animation thus falling under "Cartoon" and "Anime" together as far as the labels go but when it's thought about in terms of themes "Anime" (cartoons from Japan) tend to be better than "Cartoons" (from elsewhere). I mean most cartoons on TV that I've seen have little to no theme songs nowadays, used to you had some pretty epic theme songs for cartoons like S.W.A.T Kats' theme with it's banging guitar riffs, it didn't need lyrics to get you pumped, or the cartoons of the 80's and early 90's that had some pretty good theme songs.
I made my mom rent the Monster Rancher VHS at Blockbuster SO MANY times mostly just to jam out to the trailer version of Look Alike. Would love to hear your thoughts on the Monster Rancher series/games too, was super cool then just kinda faded into obscurity.
I found the movie late - like when I was 19. I.....still really like it. The Sonic voice feels like it's one of the best. Even if it's not out of this world, it's consistent, unlike a few Sonic voices we know.
God I love the way this movie looks. It always reminded me of Digimon with it's brutalism (yes thats a real thing, look it up) aesthetic of modern cities alongside overgrown nature. And it's a Sonic aesthetic only seen in this movie, which is a shame because I think it fits in with Sonic very well. Edit: Yeah the soundtrack is kickass too and I should probably look it up on RUclips. Also the word you're looking for when describing the Japanese releases is an 'OVA'
apart from the really bad voice for tails and the strange characters, i really liked the movie. tbh the only problem i have with it is the voice actors for sonic and tails (mainly tails)
I adore the silly dialogue in this movie. I've seen it... probably five times now, if not more and it's just... such an enjoyable watch once in a blue moon because of the over the top acting. "You might know everything that I'm going to do, but that's not going to help you, since I know everything you're going to do; STRANGE, ISN'T IT???" like you just happened to quote my absolute favorite line in this movie and I just love this cheesy lil cartoon to bits.
The Line That Always Gets me is The You May Know What I’m Gonna do,But it Won’t Help You Because I Know Everything You’ll do Because I’m Like Dude,That’s Not Gonna Help You Either,It’s Just a Vice Versa Situation
Sonic 1 wasn't used because it was the worst of the Trilogy, at least CD had the time travel thing to add exploration. Sonic 1 didn't age well there was a GBA game that proved that. Sonic 1 didn't get an actual good official release until Whitehead & we all know it. I prefer Sonic OVA the way it is, although a continuation would be awesome. I like to imagine a rematch between Sonic & Metal Sonic (brought back by Eggman) during the 12th Episode.
This is honestly the best official animated Sonic media there is. It gets the personality and feel of the Sonic's world so well (ironic considering it's not on Sonic's world). Also for the record the reason Metal suddenly turns good and Sonic tries to save him and felt bad is because Tails had just reprogramed Metal to have Sonic's personality and Metal was made to be able to read Sonic's thoughts and emotions in this movie (and vice versa) hence the "STRANGE ISN'T IT?" speech.
I watched Sonic Underground a few years ago like maybe half a decade but I enjoyed ahven't seen it since and I assume it is bad and I just enjoyed it as a little kid but eh.
I love this movie. I'm glad Sonic Mania Adventures was done in a similar style to it, because before that short series this was the only cartoon which stayed faithful to Sonic's style. I love how it mimics the Sonic CD animation style, too. And to be honest, I wish we could have seen more of that world. The Land of the Sky and the Land of Darkness should have been explored more.
Sonic and Tails sound like they have a cold, but I love the chessy voices anyway. A fun film with good art, bright colors, goofy, and great music. How modern Sonic games should be nowadays instead of dark, edgy plots and characters.
I had watched this movie so many times as a kid that I could literally quote just about every scene. I was into Sonic a bundle of years after it was created (I wasn't even born at the time of its creation), and yet I still loved it more than the DVDs, which multiple series had been automatically downloaded onto a tablet of mine from my mom's friend who knew my obsession. Watching the movie makes my soul happy. (Also, you gave me happiness, so here's a subscriber.)
half of the people keep saying that its weird sonic can understand metal sonic and that he tried to save him from the lava however tails says in the movie that metal sonic and sonic have both the exact same minds and intelligence which basically kinda explains how he was able to translate or possible "guess" what hes saying and he tried to save him possibly to ask him to join him, other then that the movie would have been better if it was 1 hour and 30 minutes like any other movie to explain the story and reasoning for the characters...
04:47-WHOA WHOA WHOA, stop. Stop right there. Rewind a couple frames. Are we...are we not going to talk about whoever made this movie just randomly using the symbol of Rareware in the background?
I bought this DVD at like best buy when i was in middle school and I watched it continuously for like years. I loved how anime it was. The floating, the sound effects, the terrible dub and all. So good.
The film knows it’s silly and doesn’t take itself too seriously. That’s nice for a change. And Sonic’s dub may be off sometimes but when it comes to the lazy and sarcastic aspect of his character, he nails it. I love this movie, even without my nostalgia glasses on. It’s not good, but it’s definitely a good time.
This for me is the best Sonic animation. It made Classic Sonic justice, had an amazing Soundtrack, had a good story, epic battles and drama. I preffer Sonic Ova than Mania Adventures aaaany day. Also Sara best girl.
Used to watch this all the time on the same tape. This was before I knew Sonic was a game series, I loved Adventures of Sonic so much my mom ordered the tape for me when it came out. Thought it was just a cartoon series and this was a movie based on it. Like you I knew it was weird even back then, like who was Knuckles? Who were the President and Sarah? Brings me back
It's actually very weird. Not because breast feeding but we all seem to be missing she's Eggman's underage kidnapped catgirl hostage wife currently feeding his kids.
Commando Eclipse Unless it's mentioned in the manga they based this on, it really isn't stated what Sara's age is, just that she's the president's daughter, Eggman wants to marry her and she has a crush on Sonic...following a trend of human girls who have a thing for the Blue Blur.
It was announced at E3 2014 with a 2016 release, if I remember correctly. It was then being made by SONY. When 2016 came around it was announced that it had been delayed to 2018. Then in 2017 SONY dropped the movie and its crew, which got picked up by Paramount (including the movie's crew), who then later gave it a November 2019 release. Its currently casting, and set to start filming next month.
Fun fact: The episode of the Sonic series you were showing clips from in the beginning when you were talking about watching something over and over was the exact episode I did that with as a kid. I drove my family absolutely nuts with it, and they get flashbacks to it any time someone speaks reeeeeealllly ssslllooooowwwwlllyyy. At some point, my grandparents "lost" the vhs tape for the episode.
ehhh there kinda is, actually. I am a HUGE fan of dubbed anime by and large, and usually a serious defender of the art of it, most of the time, but this is when ADV was still churning out some really below average work at best, before they'd get SUBSTANTIALLY better. I mean it's not "Galaxy Fraulein Yuna" bad, but it's not nearly on the level of Azumanga Daioh or Excel Saga good, either.
FogsFles This dub is meme worthy along with the likes of Kirby Right Back At Ya. Look up Shut Up Tails, it will appear in the results before you finish typing.
The guy who done Sonic in this ain't no Jaleel White but he's not super bad, I've heard some pretty bad dubbing in my time watching anime and this ain't even close and it's pretty low on my 'annoyance meter' just for reference the top of that meter is "Naruto's English VA" and said actor saying "Believe it!"..that actually breaks the meter when that happens and why I can only watch Naruto or play Naruto games with Japanese VA. Going back to the dubber here Martin Burke didn't do horrible but he gave 105% on something that warranted maybe a 99% effort. You wanna hear some absolutely nutzo dubbing watch Ghost Stories official dub...it's crazier than a fan dub. Edit Ghost Stories was ALSO done by ADV films for reference.
Dude Naruto had a great English Dub, are you an idiot or something? Naruto's Japanese VA is a lot whinier & borderline annoying in Part 1. If you want to look at a crappy English Dub look no further than Sailor Moon's DiC dub, the only worse official dub I can think of is FLCL & that's probably just because FLCL original sucks. Toonami was just dumb to spam it at us 3 times through consecutively back on Memorial Day.
WaterKirby 1994 You have your opinion and have mine, but I'll give you the Sailor Moon DiC dub, that was horrid and nearly every anime fan I've ever talked to has said it was just a bad job overall as far as Sailor Moon goes. In my opinion Naruto's US VA has one of the most grating voices I've ever heard. And Toonami did the FLCL rerun spam to hype up FLCL Progressive since it would start showing soon. Also I like FLCL if for no other reason than Naota's dub actor is the exact same one for Laharl from the Disgaea series and while I 98% of the time prefer my games and anime subbed over dubbed, NIS games ALWAYS get played through the first couple of times in dub cause they are just funnier in dub vs. their original Japanese, Hyperdimension Neptunia games are the same way for me.
Heh, hit home when you mentioned loving JP and Sonic as a kid, that and Mario was my bread and butter as a child too. Was only one of few in my school that also liked them though!
I adored this movie as a kid. It wasn't at my local Blockbuster but was at the one in the next town over. (Where my friend lived) So that was my first experience with it. I always keep an eye out at flea markets for this one but the chances of finding it are highly unlikely. Also I quote the "Strange, isn't it!?" line far too much. Excellent video as always man!
Tbh the Sonic movie was the only anime done in that typical 90’s style that I could actually stomach for the longest time; Yu Yu Hakusho irked me, DBZ always got under my skin, but when I watch this movie, it’s just like returning to a forgotten dream of finely tuned nostalgia-aesthetic. My computer backgrounds throughout all my desktop builds has always been the shot of Robotropolis when the lights come on for this very reason, and my dad remembers me humming “Look a Like” for most of my childhood
Metal Sonic: Beep bloop Sonic: What? "This world isn't big enough for the two of us and one of us has to go, because, being a copy of me, there would be all kinds of confusions of who is the real Sonic, for you see...[continues talking for, like 2 minutes] Metal Sonic: ... Tails: Uhh... Knuckles: ... the President's weird catgirl daughter: S...Sonic? Sonic: ...and so, in conclusion, you must die!"? Metal Sonic: B..boop? Blippity blop doop. Sonic: Oh, you were just saying "Screw you".
This movie is an EXPERIENCE. Love it! I'm in it for the funny, weird moments and of course the Sonic vs. Metal fight. It was pretty savage because Metal looked like he was actually trying to kill Sonic. And I agree, the art, mood and animation were beautiful.
Suddenly I'd like to see Sonic flip the audience off in the upcoming movie, too. XD Thanks for doing a review of this "movie". It's always had a special, nostalgic place in my heart, enough that I hunted down a used DVD copy on Ebay after my VHS copy bit the dust. It really is a bizarre OVA, but I really hope it's never forgotten, as it's very unique.

I REALLY love the Sonic Movie/OVA (whatever you wanna call it). I remember it's trailer appearing on a VHS tape and always rewinding it just to watch it again and again. I think I was like 6 or 7.
in my opinion, I really like these voice actors, they really suit the classic characters. If these voice actors weren't being held to the constraints of dubbing an anime, they could've been better
When I watched this, a friend found a copy of the DVD on 2004 and gave it for my birthday. Back then it was cheap. She knew how much I enjoyed Sonic. Sonic X was out and was hyped for season 2. Then we watched this movie. Enjoyed the music too. The over the top lines with metal sonic in the fight was quite memorable for me. And to listen it in the Japanese track on dvd was nice as well.

Avery Graham i like it too but land of darkness is better imo.
Avery Graham I know right?
Frankly, I prefer THAT OVA over Mania Adventures. And I LOVED Mania Adventures.
I love Tyson Hesse works, but for some reason I would love if he manages to make a full animated series based on OVA with voice acting and all after Mania.
*SHUT UP TAILS!*
MCFLY *STRANGE ISNT IT!*

MCFLY I KNOW EVERYTHING YOUR GOING TO DO STRANGE ISN’T IT? GRRRR
Metal Robotnik always reminded me of a smaller version of the Death Egg Robot from Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
STRANGE ISN'T IT
(edit) To those who think that I'm fucking dumb yes, I am aware that anime is a type of cartoon, I just call the Japanese cartoons anime so I don't get people or others confused as to what I'm talking about. That and it's an artstyle different from ours.
It's sad when a Japanese movie/OVA has better music then a child's cartoon...*looking at you Sonic Underground*
You mean...completely expected?
a purple dragon I mean since its a "movie" it makes more sense for them to work harder to make better music and animation...sonic underground was just for kids who either never seen sonic and rhose who had an interest in him
Anime themes > Cartoon themes
Agustin Leguiza
, Anime themes are cartoon themes.
Syger I love Monster Rancher. Monsters rule. It had a "Star Wars" plot twist and I really liked Tiger (Raiger).
I found the movie late - like when I was 19. I.....still really like it. The Sonic voice feels like it's one of the best. Even if it's not out of this world, it's consistent, unlike a few Sonic voices we know.
Did is just me but to me Sarah the Presidents daughter kinda looks like Mimi from Digimon
This movie is the best tbh and even the dub is so endearing
God I love the way this movie looks. It always reminded me of Digimon with it's brutalism (yes thats a real thing, look it up) aesthetic of modern cities alongside overgrown nature. And it's a Sonic aesthetic only seen in this movie, which is a shame because I think it fits in with Sonic very well.
Edit: Yeah the soundtrack is kickass too and I should probably look it up on RUclips. Also the word you're looking for when describing the Japanese releases is an 'OVA'
2:45 fun fact, he actually WAS fighting off a cold while recording for the dub
she
apart from the really bad voice for tails and the strange characters, i really liked the movie. tbh the only problem i have with it is the voice actors for sonic and tails (mainly tails)
I love metal sonics redemption
And him turning good (becoming an antihero)
This movie spawned the "Shut up tails" meme. That was literally my first exposure to youtube
SHUT UP TAILS!!
It feels so in-character for this movie to have a stellar soundtrack, given the series it's named after
Blockbuster-Never Forget...
The Line That Always Gets me is The You May Know What I’m Gonna do,But it Won’t Help You Because I Know Everything You’ll do Because I’m Like Dude,That’s Not Gonna Help You Either,It’s Just a Vice Versa Situation
The "Well um... it's actually an OVA" comments are coming
Irony is a weapon
What the hell is a OVA?
Scott Radcliffe Original Video Animation. Not a theatrical movie, yet not an anime on a channel. Kinda like direct to video but actually good.
Irony is a weapon Yeah, but it was SOLD as a movie.
This movie had some pretty awesome scenes. I wish the Sonic cartoon shows had this animation style.
Imagine if this movie was an anime divides in 3 sagas: sonic 1, sonic 2 and, sonic 3& knuckles
Luis Campos96
What, are CD and the 8 Bit Games chopped liver?
Sonic 1 wasn't used because it was the worst of the Trilogy, at least CD had the time travel thing to add exploration. Sonic 1 didn't age well there was a GBA game that proved that. Sonic 1 didn't get an actual good official release until Whitehead & we all know it. I prefer Sonic OVA the way it is, although a continuation would be awesome. I like to imagine a rematch between Sonic & Metal Sonic (brought back by Eggman) during the 12th Episode.
&knuckles &knuckles
This is honestly the best official animated Sonic media there is. It gets the personality and feel of the Sonic's world so well (ironic considering it's not on Sonic's world).
Also for the record the reason Metal suddenly turns good and Sonic tries to save him and felt bad is because Tails had just reprogramed Metal to have Sonic's personality and Metal was made to be able to read Sonic's thoughts and emotions in this movie (and vice versa) hence the "STRANGE ISN'T IT?" speech.
Still better than Sonic Underground.
That Random Encounter Guy you can’t serious!
You have got to be dead serious!
I watched Sonic Underground a few years ago like maybe half a decade but I enjoyed ahven't seen it since and I assume it is bad and I just enjoyed it as a little kid but eh.
It’s better then Sonic x to tbh.
Nabinani Neptuner He is serious. Most sonic related stuff you can watch is better than Underground.
Ranen Chancelor well, I haven’t seeen SAtam yet, so I should give it a try. But why does it have two big letters?
This ova still had that cheery game type world but still managed to shift into dark tones where appropriate.

Sonic the movie is... pretty good.
One of my favorite movies as a kid, the soundtrack it's just outstanding, the theme for rise in eggman land is a personal favorite too.
"Best known for handling the dub of *Avon Gelly On.* "
04:47-WHOA WHOA WHOA, stop. Stop right there. Rewind a couple frames. Are we...are we not going to talk about whoever made this movie just randomly using the symbol of Rareware in the background?
9:02-9:11 That would be absolutely amazing, to be honest with you
I bought this DVD at like best buy when i was in middle school and I watched it continuously for like years. I loved how anime it was. The floating, the sound effects, the terrible dub and all. So good.
I love the sonic ova
Brings me back
Why was she breast feeding one of the little robotniks? I know that's not a weird thing but it seems weird as hell for some reason?
I mean that's what boobs are for.
It's actually very weird. Not because breast feeding but we all seem to be missing she's Eggman's underage kidnapped catgirl hostage wife currently feeding his kids.
STRANGE ISN'T IT?
She may act like a brat, but her age is never once stated.
Commando Eclipse Unless it's mentioned in the manga they based this on, it really isn't stated what Sara's age is, just that she's the president's daughter, Eggman wants to marry her and she has a crush on Sonic...following a trend of human girls who have a thing for the Blue Blur.
WHEN YOU MENTIONED THE SOUND TRACK I STARTED DANCING
So it looks like I missed something. What's all this about a live action Sonic movie? When was this announced and when did you talk about it?
It was announced at E3 2014 with a 2016 release, if I remember correctly. It was then being made by SONY. When 2016 came around it was announced that it had been delayed to 2018. Then in 2017 SONY dropped the movie and its crew, which got picked up by Paramount (including the movie's crew), who then later gave it a November 2019 release. Its currently casting, and set to start filming next month.
that sounds like alot of setbacks causing some baaaaad film making I am guessing
You should cover medabots
erbrown115 I agree. I love the anime series
Sonic X for the Leapster was a true classic. Really ahead of it's time.
Anyone else thought it was Aerith in the thumbnail? Just me? Okay
Nicolle she looks like that girl from digimon season 1
Juan Dlc You mean Mimi from Digimon Adventure 01? OMG you are right! How did I not notice?
She gets killed by sephiroth
Mushroom Head not much of a spoiler, everyone knows that lol
Did Sonic just gave Dr Eggman the middle finger?!?! 3:38
nothing wrong with the dub
ehhh there kinda is, actually.
FogsFles
This dub is meme worthy along with the likes of Kirby Right Back At Ya.
The voices for Sonic, Robotnik, and Knuckles make up for all the bad voices. The soundtrack is awesome too.
Subscribed.
Heh, hit home when you mentioned loving JP and Sonic as a kid, that and Mario was my bread and butter as a child too. Was only one of few in my school that also liked them though!

Me: damn. U ain't wrong tho
Excellent video as always man!
yo this movie just randomly came back into my brain i remember obsessively watching it over and over on VHS as a kid
Somewhere at my parents house the DVD for this movie probably still sits in my old TV/DVD tube combo I had from the 90’s
Long story short the setting, aesthetic and story in the OVA/Movie is a completely separate universe and continuity to the games.
Holy shit that Gaia Online reference. I'm instantly washed over with pleasant memories and utter rage, both at the same time
Thank you. Good video too
So that random Cat he mentioned that nobody Fing would have known came from Gaia online?
Metal Sonic: Beep bloop
Sonic: What? "This world isn't big enough for the two of us and one of us has to go, because, being a copy of me, there would be all kinds of confusions of who is the real Sonic, for you see...[continues talking for, like 2 minutes]
Metal Sonic: ...
Did you know? Princess Sarah was inspired by the original Sonic 1 Manga, that was literally the original uncut Sonic 1 plot.
Suddenly I'd like to see Sonic flip the audience off in the upcoming movie, too. XD
Thanks for doing a review of this "movie". It's always had a special, nostalgic place in my heart, enough that I hunted down a used DVD copy on Ebay after my VHS copy bit the dust. It really is a bizarre OVA, but I really hope it's never forgotten, as it's very unique.
Holy shit I remember watching this movie over and over! I loved it and now that I'm older the voice acting is terrible but still love it for what it is
I REALLY love the Sonic Movie/OVA (whatever you wanna call it).
The animation quality right after 4:36 was FREGGIN AMAZING!!!!
So glad you mentioned the soundtrack. It's even better than the movie itself.
3:25 As a anime fan, I think Sonic The Movie isn't that great or bad, it was kinda decent. It does have some good fight scenes and some action and it's still entertaining to watch :)
*AESTHETIC* is Billiam's favorite word for this movie.
Ah the Sonic OVA, one of my first anime I watched both sub and dub.
Robotnik being treated as a joke is actually pretty accurate to the series.
