I think it can mean "go to hell" in English speaking countries too. In the Roman gladiator fights it also meant "finish him". And when it comes to making reviews of movies or games or online comments, it the thing in question is bad or lousy or "sucks" (to use a slang term). It's the last of these meanings that is the most common.
That one image describes this movie perfectly. A fat Tzar Nicholas the Second is screaming at something while some robot holds up a looney tunes style sign saying goodbye to a person you wouldn’t know. Does it make sense? Hell no. Is it reasonable on any level? Absolutely not. Is it absolutely comical and beautiful when you shut your brain off? You’re god damn right it is. This movie is a beautiful trip of an experience if you can play along with the madness. When I think sonic, this is what I think of.

What I found interesting it is how pointed out there's little/sutble info in movies like this but apparently the intro to every Superman movie and the cartoon series is repetative and tired. I mean the complaint makes sense but pointless at the same time

Can't really say anything to this...I grew up in the middle of the console wars (...that sounds like the start of a character movie backstory..) and remember the magazine ads and playing both Sega and Nintendo games...but eventually Mario and his crew in Nintendo became to strong and internal struggle caused Sonic and his army to fall apart...in the end Mario decided it was best to keep his friends close and his enemies closer still and extended the hand of friendship to Sonic and the Sega crew..the first console wars between the two former giants ended, now they fight in a new console war against the likes of Master Chief and whoever manages to screw up enough courage to be the front line for Sony at a given moment.
Blame the suicidally idiotic executives at Sega... If the 32X didn't exist and the Saturn was handled better outside of Japan (among other mistakes they could have avoided with better management), Sega would more than likely still be making consoles today...

Holy shit, you missed some GOLDEN moments from this! You skipped arguably the MOST popular scene from this whole movie. STRANGE, ISNT IT?! Also, a few tidbits about the movie: 1) Apparently the actress who played Tails in the movie actually DID have a cold when recording this. They went with it because I guess the director hates kids (going the "snot nosed brat" route) 2) Sonic suddenly wanting to save Metal? Simple: Sonic's personality was coming out of Metal again after Tails hacked his system. That was something else explained, the fact that Metal was made by Sonic's life data essentially made them like brothers. That was a bond that came out there. Sonic, after seeing Metal save the president and the owl (yeah. I didnt get them either as a kid. They dont exist) suddenly realizes Metal is about to die and Sonic is about to lose his brother. Also you skipped over Metal Robotnik being a fake and it was Robotnik controlling him, and Sara was there for the ride. That was the pod they were in.
I don't think that he saw metal sonic as a brother, more he just saw the posibility that he can become something than an evil killer robot. In sonic comic released these past few years there was an arc where eggman hit his head and became a friendly mechanic in some random vilage. Sonic decided to leave eggman alone hoping that he can be redeemed this way. Sonic is a guy who believes in redemption even for his arch enemy.

Honestly, you kinda missed out on a good part of the movie. The main focus was the duality between Sonic and Metal Sonic; Tails mentions it in one of the cutscenes. Because Metal has Sonic's data copied; he automatically knows everything Sonic does, and can use it against him as they fight. Given the fact that Metal is also a robot; he doesn't get tired like Sonic can taking a beating. Some great jokes are played with, such as the upskirt shot (Sonic begins blushing, and acting embarrassed because he is seeing what Metal sees) However, partway through the battle; Tails manages to overload Metal using the reprogrammed navigator to assimilate Sonic's data. This triggers a sense of good in Metal; which is shown when he is the one who rescues the President and Old Man. He intends to keep fighting Sonic, who recognizes from his action that Metal can be saved; but gets hit with the rock and falls into the magma; but it's at that point, he becomes self aware of what he is, and decides to let himself get destroyed. In his words; "There is only one Sonic." That kinda makes the movie a little meta when you look at it. The rest of the plot is kinda meh; it's basically the Storyline of Sonic CD, only with a new universe and some characters made up on the spot. But it's still a pretty solid movie in my opinion. Not perfect, but one of the better Video Game Movies.

This was the first time a lot of us saw Knuckles (an INCREDIBLY popular Sonic character) animated and voiced, so we loved the hell out of this OVA. A lot of us didn't have cable, so we didn't catch him in Sonic Underground and wouldn't get access to him in Sonic X until 2003, so we hold a soft spot for it in our hearts. That said, the story was clunky as all hell.
This reminded me that i had a freaking *red* vhs tape when i was a kid. I cant even remember what was on it. Just the fact that it was red was amazing enough (i think it may have been Thomas the Tank Engine, and i seem to recall it was only 25 minutes long).

What I hear originally Maddona and Sonics band (yea they had plans for him to have his own band) would just be if you open the sound test. But the problem was that they could not fit both the sound test animation and the intro audio file at the same time, so they scrapted the sound test from Sonic 1

The assassinations happened in 1990 and 2007. Quite recent. Let that sink in. In a country with very strict gun control, two elected city officials (mayors), got assassinated, in broad daylight, for criticizing the imperial family for nukes. Twice. That's not a coincidence. I remember this as a kid...honestly as weird as it is...it had WAY more effort in it then most cartoon adaptations...but god damn was this movie weird.
The story is not very good, but everything else is fantastic. Good characterization (best cartoon version of Sonic in my opinion - cocky teen who's a bit of a dick but gets the job done in the end), stylish art and animation, fun fitting music, fun comedy. I even like the dub voice acting, and prefer it over the Japanese track which I went out of my way to find - I'd rather have voice acting that's a bit annoying but full of character than archetypal anime voice acting where everyone has the exact cliche voice you'd expect them to have.
while it also adds new characters and makes up a bunch of shit, it adapts the tone, stylized surreal design sense and action of the Megadrive/Genesis games far better than any of the American shows. it helps that it draws a lot from the Sonic CD FMVs which, on their own, are the best animated Sonic ever.
15:44 Metal was seeing and feeling everything Sonic was, and viceversa. So Sonic just feelt the pain and fear of dying on lava, he was trying to save himself. I know they didnt explored that a lot but it is still interesting.
Chris Kencaid cause Doug is at his best when he can just quickly riff on something. That way he gets More jokes in and if one doesn't hit he moves on. His skits, if not funny, can drag on though and you have to wait for the next joke

As a Sonic fan, I can say this is one of the best representations of the character in media: if you played the Sonic games since the 90's, then you can understand some of its characters (I know Sarah, the Owl and the President don't exist in the games, but think of it as an alternate universe - like the Ninja Turtles). Although, I dare to say the worst thing here is the voice acting; the animation is good, the music is OK, the lore/world building is great (I always hear Robotnik's tale and Knuckles' explanation of the world and the magma current), the environments are interesting and Metal Sonic is as menacing as ever. Sonic's fans should check this out.
Ummm...no. I say Sonic Mania Adventures would have that crown. I've played the Sonic games in the 90s and this is not a good representation of the games.
Well Sonic talks and there are OC that don't appear in the games. Robotnik in that is more like Darth Vader opposed to an egg shaped Wiley Clone. Plus there are no formal kingdoms or royalty present in the 90's games. So no, I don't think Sonic SatAM is a good representation of the games. It's a nice off shoot and a decent interpretation of the series as a whole, but it's no where close to the games.
I totally forgot about that one (and I believe it is an incredible representation of the franchise, giving us one of the best Robotnik ever), but the Nostalgia Critic had already gave a review about it and it liked it, unlike AoStH.

16:17 Overly complicated story?! Sonic is tricked into thinking a robot is going to destroy the world. It is revealed that it was just a scheme to activate Metal Sonic. That's it... Well Its official. Anything other than "hero rescues the princess" is too complicated for a general audience.
He doesn't even know anything about the sonic franchise. Period. During his sonic satam and the adventures of sonic the hedgehog, Doug talked about how he knew nothing of sonic. Yet, several years later, he makes another sonic review, and all he does is repeats the same jokes and memes that everyone has already done. And my god the freaking Megaman comparison. This isn't even a review. It's a man who thinks he is being so dang clever but is just embarrassing himself all the way through.
Superior to Modern Sonic and Modern "Classic Sonic"? Yeah I'd say so. Superior to 90's Classic Sonic and 2000's Modern Sonic? Yeahhh I don't know about that.
+Lit Woman - I suppose that's why Sonic continues trying new ideas which may or may not work; while Mega Man is a walking corpse being dragged along on strings by Capcom to make money. One of these series is trying to find new ideas to wow people; the other is doing the same thing over and over again, and getting praised for it. Somewhere along the line, a mistake was made. I love both series, but Megaman 9 and 10 were just 2 and 3 rehashed. At least Sonic Mania was something different with a return to form.
Sonic unleashed (the game where he turns into a werewolf) is criminally underrated. Great music, great story, great levels and even the werewolf stages have satisfying combat. I greatly recommend it.

I loved it when I was a kid, and I still do. It's the only Sonic cartoon that feels like it takes place in Sonic's world, before the games started putting Sonic in realistic settings anyway. Granted, the voices are a little annoying, but they were par for the course for anime dubs back then. I probably would have found the voices more jarring if I hadn't seen the movie before the games gave Sonic an official voice. I wish the OVA were more successful in Japan so we could have seen what they had planned for what was originally going to be an anime series.
I enjoyed the movie quite a bit as a kid but looking back it didn't make that much sense but it still doesn't stop me from liking it for the nostalgia.
I feel like you left out the part where Metal showed empathy, a side effect of having Sonic's data copied. That's why he simply let the Owl borrow Sonic's clothes and why he saved the President. But nah, cut that part out for the sake of a joke. Its cool.

Night raptor Is that movie even nostalgic enough? I watched it a lot growing up along with the boring as hell Underworld movies(just to spend time with my dad before he had to deploy) and I barely remember that movie existing which is quite the opposite of nostalgia. And a lot of people I know who are vampire/werewolf/movie enthusiasts don't even remember it exists until I tell them about it. It is honestly just a very forgettable movie filled with horrible acting,boring as hell plot,and bland characters(kind of like all Kate Beckinsale's movies) I'm just glad Hugh Jackman is better known as Wolverine since I bet money this movie would have ruined his career if it was memorable at all.

The story goes that he was dissatisfied with how his music sounded when it came out of the Genesis, so he asked to have his name removed from the game. Sega claims the music was removed because of the pedophilia accusations levied against him around that time.
Blue Venom Hell if I know, the whole point is that Metal, while being the cold calculating machine that he is, was still ultimately based upon Sonic and understands him better than anybody else. There have been numerous hints of Metal softening up to his nemesis in regards of them being so similar, and the ending is touching precisely because it was like looking at your own self out-selfing you for your own greater good.
Bouncing off of what zummone said instead of grabbing Sonic's hand to drag him into the lava he swiped at him as if to stay back and said "There can be only one Sonic" just like when Sonic translated before the fight even started. Heck the fact that Metal didn't off the owl says something.
Doug, I love you and all, but Sara's meant to be a Cat-Girl. They were kind of like what you gave normal people to lure them into being Furries. It's a Japanese thing. So in a way... it's worse than you thought, just not in the way you thought.

I think it can mean "go to hell" in English speaking countries too. In the Roman gladiator fights it also meant "finish him". And when it comes to making reviews of movies or games or online comments, it the thing in question is bad or lousy or "sucks" (to use a slang term). It's the last of these meanings that is the most common.

That one image describes this movie perfectly. A fat Tzar Nicholas the Second is screaming at something while some robot holds up a looney tunes style sign saying goodbye to a person you wouldn’t know.
Does it make sense? Hell no. Is it reasonable on any level? Absolutely not. Is it absolutely comical and beautiful when you shut your brain off? You’re god damn right it is.
This movie is a beautiful trip of an experience if you can play along with the madness. When I think sonic, this is what I think of.

Can't really say anything to this...I grew up in the middle of the console wars (...that sounds like the start of a character movie backstory..) and remember the magazine ads and playing both Sega and Nintendo games...but eventually Mario and his crew in Nintendo became to strong and internal struggle caused Sonic and his army to fall apart...in the end Mario decided it was best to keep his friends close and his enemies closer still and extended the hand of friendship to Sonic and the Sega crew..the first console wars between the two former giants ended, now they fight in a new console war against the likes of Master Chief and whoever manages to screw up enough courage to be the front line for Sony at a given moment.

Holy shit, you missed some GOLDEN moments from this! You skipped arguably the MOST popular scene from this whole movie. STRANGE, ISNT IT?! Also, a few tidbits about the movie:
1) Apparently the actress who played Tails in the movie actually DID have a cold when recording this. They went with it because I guess the director hates kids (going the "snot nosed brat" route)
2) Sonic suddenly wanting to save Metal? Simple: Sonic's personality was coming out of Metal again after Tails hacked his system. That was something else explained, the fact that Metal was made by Sonic's life data essentially made them like brothers. That was a bond that came out there. Sonic, after seeing Metal save the president and the owl (yeah. I didnt get them either as a kid. They dont exist) suddenly realizes Metal is about to die and Sonic is about to lose his brother.
Also you skipped over Metal Robotnik being a fake and it was Robotnik controlling him, and Sara was there for the ride. That was the pod they were in.
You forgot Sara breastfeeding an Egg-baby.
You also can’t forget to mention Sonic straight up flipping off Metal Robotnik at one point during their fight
I don't think that he saw metal sonic as a brother, more he just saw the posibility that he can become something than an evil killer robot. In sonic comic released these past few years there was an arc where eggman hit his head and became a friendly mechanic in some random vilage. Sonic decided to leave eggman alone hoping that he can be redeemed this way. Sonic is a guy who believes in redemption even for his arch enemy.

Honestly, you kinda missed out on a good part of the movie.
The main focus was the duality between Sonic and Metal Sonic; Tails mentions it in one of the cutscenes. Because Metal has Sonic's data copied; he automatically knows everything Sonic does, and can use it against him as they fight. Given the fact that Metal is also a robot; he doesn't get tired like Sonic can taking a beating. Some great jokes are played with, such as the upskirt shot (Sonic begins blushing, and acting embarrassed because he is seeing what Metal sees) However, partway through the battle; Tails manages to overload Metal using the reprogrammed navigator to assimilate Sonic's data. This triggers a sense of good in Metal; which is shown when he is the one who rescues the President and Old Man. He intends to keep fighting Sonic, who recognizes from his action that Metal can be saved; but gets hit with the rock and falls into the magma; but it's at that point, he becomes self aware of what he is, and decides to let himself get destroyed. In his words; "There is only one Sonic."
That kinda makes the movie a little meta when you look at it. The rest of the plot is kinda meh; it's basically the Storyline of Sonic CD, only with a new universe and some characters made up on the spot. But it's still a pretty solid movie in my opinion. Not perfect, but one of the better Video Game Movies.

This was the first time a lot of us saw Knuckles (an INCREDIBLY popular Sonic character) animated and voiced, so we loved the hell out of this OVA. A lot of us didn't have cable, so we didn't catch him in Sonic Underground and wouldn't get access to him in Sonic X until 2003, so we hold a soft spot for it in our hearts.
That said, the story was clunky as all hell.

In Japan a thumbs down is actually a lot stronger than in the west. It's not quite "fuck you", but its meaning is similar to how Roman emperors are thought to have used it when condemning a defeated gladiator to death. You won't see people doing so often for that reason.
Kuma Toni Roman Emperors most likely gave a thumbs up to approve execution. If the loser was to survive they'd either put their thumb down to indicate lowering your weapon or sheath their thumb with their other hand.
The idea that gladiator fights ended in death is an outdated and dogmatic belief started in the Renaissance Era because people then wanted to feel superior to their pagan ancestors, thus they made them appear to be savage barbarians with a taste for blood. Most gladiator fights ended at a surrender or first blood

I remember this as a kid...honestly as weird as it is...it had WAY more effort in it then most cartoon adaptations...but god damn was this movie weird.
It was weird, flat and for the most part out of context ... Yet weirdly enough it has quite a certain charm.
The story is not very good, but everything else is fantastic. Good characterization (best cartoon version of Sonic in my opinion - cocky teen who's a bit of a dick but gets the job done in the end), stylish art and animation, fun fitting music, fun comedy. I even like the dub voice acting, and prefer it over the Japanese track which I went out of my way to find - I'd rather have voice acting that's a bit annoying but full of character than archetypal anime voice acting where everyone has the exact cliche voice you'd expect them to have.
I like to think of it as an adaptation of Sonic CD. I do think it’s the best Sonic adaptation next to SatAm and a thousand times better than Sonic X.
while it also adds new characters and makes up a bunch of shit, it adapts the tone, stylized surreal design sense and action of the Megadrive/Genesis games far better than any of the American shows. it helps that it draws a lot from the Sonic CD FMVs which, on their own, are the best animated Sonic ever.

I swear, the Critic's Robotnik voice sounds more like Doofenshmirtz from Phineas & Ferb than it does Robotnik.
As a Sonic fan, I can say this is one of the best representations of the character in media: if you played the Sonic games since the 90's, then you can understand some of its characters (I know Sarah, the Owl and the President don't exist in the games, but think of it as an alternate universe - like the Ninja Turtles).
Although, I dare to say the worst thing here is the voice acting; the animation is good, the music is OK, the lore/world building is great (I always hear Robotnik's tale and Knuckles' explanation of the world and the magma current), the environments are interesting and Metal Sonic is as menacing as ever.
Sonic's fans should check this out.

Well Sonic talks and there are OC that don't appear in the games. Robotnik in that is more like Darth Vader opposed to an egg shaped Wiley Clone. Plus there are no formal kingdoms or royalty present in the 90's games. So no, I don't think Sonic SatAM is a good representation of the games. It's a nice off shoot and a decent interpretation of the series as a whole, but it's no where close to the games.
I totally forgot about that one (and I believe it is an incredible representation of the franchise, giving us one of the best Robotnik ever), but the Nostalgia Critic had already gave a review about it and it liked it, unlike AoStH.

Well I wouldn't go that far, but he certainly has trouble understanding a simple story.
He doesn't even know anything about the sonic franchise. Period. During his sonic satam and the adventures of sonic the hedgehog, Doug talked about how he knew nothing of sonic. Yet, several years later, he makes another sonic review, and all he does is repeats the same jokes and memes that everyone has already done.
And my god the freaking Megaman comparison. This isn't even a review. It's a man who thinks he is being so dang clever but is just embarrassing himself all the way through.
Superior to Modern Sonic and Modern "Classic Sonic"? Yeah I'd say so. Superior to 90's Classic Sonic and 2000's Modern Sonic? Yeahhh I don't know about that.
+Lit Woman - I suppose that's why Sonic continues trying new ideas which may or may not work; while Mega Man is a walking corpse being dragged along on strings by Capcom to make money.
One of these series is trying to find new ideas to wow people; the other is doing the same thing over and over again, and getting praised for it. Somewhere along the line, a mistake was made. I love both series, but Megaman 9 and 10 were just 2 and 3 rehashed. At least Sonic Mania was something different with a return to form.

I loved it when I was a kid, and I still do. It's the only Sonic cartoon that feels like it takes place in Sonic's world, before the games started putting Sonic in realistic settings anyway. Granted, the voices are a little annoying, but they were par for the course for anime dubs back then. I probably would have found the voices more jarring if I hadn't seen the movie before the games gave Sonic an official voice. I wish the OVA were more successful in Japan so we could have seen what they had planned for what was originally going to be an anime series.
I enjoyed the movie quite a bit as a kid but looking back it didn't make that much sense but it still doesn't stop me from liking it

Night raptor Is that movie even nostalgic enough? I watched it a lot growing up along with the boring as hell Underworld movies(just to spend time with my dad before he had to deploy) and I barely remember that movie existing which is quite the opposite of nostalgia. And a lot of people I know who are vampire/werewolf/movie enthusiasts don't even remember it exists until I tell them about it. It is honestly just a very forgettable movie filled with horrible acting,boring as hell plot,and bland characters(kind of like all Kate Beckinsale's movies) I'm just glad Hugh Jackman is better known as Wolverine since I bet money this movie would have ruined his career if it was memorable at all.

Blue Venom Hell if I know, the whole point is that Metal, while being the cold calculating machine that he is, was still ultimately based upon Sonic and understands him better than anybody else. There have been numerous hints of Metal softening up to his nemesis in regards of them being so similar, and the ending is touching precisely because it was like looking at your own self out-selfing you for your own greater good.
Bouncing off of what zummone said instead of grabbing Sonic's hand to drag him into the lava he swiped at him as if to stay back and said "There can be only one Sonic" just like when Sonic translated before the fight even started. Heck the fact that Metal didn't off the owl says something.
