This was amazing. Being on the water gives a whole different perspective. And all the different types of boats too.
Also noticed one thing.
Norm on land - small, narrow backstreets.

I had fun trying to spot the small narrow canals on Google maps to see if he was near any where I went.

By the way, the lack of Stair Rating and Sewer Lids is baffling me.
I was thinking the same thing. The mad lad has captain license for a while and already has favourite hidden canals and dead ends in the absolutely vast waterways of Tokyo.

A video on water! Yeah, part 2 is needed. It's interesting to see the city while traveling by water. I wonder if there are secret/hidden pathways from the river towards underground areas. That last shot at the end was pretty cool!

I so agree! The distractions like these make me feel more apart of the experience than videos with perfect sound throughout. Even the loud birds made me smile.

That was wonderful and eye-opening. Another perspective of Tokyo! Eating the snacks by cherry blossoms in the water was such a dream!
But now I gotta ask: is it possible to tour other places in Japan via water? Like the old places you had been, but revisiting it by boat?

Yanagawa's canals are often referred to as 'the Venice of Japan', so they are worth looking into!
I have a marina membership that spans the whole country!

I'm surprised no one has made an anime set on the rivers of Tokyo. There are some unique and beautiful environments there.
I still can't get over you having a boating license. I can only imagine all the avenues this opens up and different angles of approach for adventure. Truly a unique view of Tokyo that I'd never imagine being able to enjoy. Thanks!

Ok, but how do you consistently find such amazingly cool places? I know a lot of these are ‘unexplored’ by most because you reached them by boat, but STILL. This is what keeps us all coming back; seeing parts of Japan we’d never dream of.

I may never get to Japan, but watching others and learning things about the country is the next best thing. There was a documentary that included the waterways, but it wasn't as detailed as your boat tour. Thank you for sharing your experiences.

Can't believe how liberating a boat license could be. You're casually boating through the canals of the biggest metropolis in the world, soaking in the really unique perspective of the city, and there's very little traffic! It's like having a driving license and getting to drive casually to soak in the streetscapes of Paris, or any other city...which is ludicrous since the streets are always full of traffic and you need to pay attention all the time!
It never fails to put a smile on my face to see how happy you are while out and about somewhere new!

Imagine how magical those old time celebrations and festivals might have been! maybe walking from boat to boat filled with shops? or huge marine parades !

Long time watcher (years), occasional commenter here lol. What a cool video, definitely a unique perspective. Just wanted to say, I always enjoy watching your stuff because out of all the Japan content creators out there, you really seem to be the one who has really wholly embraced and fully integrated into Japanese society. No shade for anyone else, I like to watch videos about food and cute stuff too but the types of things you focus on are so different and it really feels like you're "on the inside" instead of a foreign point of view. I moved to Japan last year and I appreciate this kind of stuff even more now since its so different and off the beaten path and gives me lots of ideas!

This is so cool. You never think about just renting a boat and freely driving it around Tokyo. It’s such a unique perspective to see Tokyo from that many never get to see. It would be so fun to just rent a boat and go out with your friends or family and sit out in the bay or something and hangout with snacks and drinks. Now I feel like I need to get a boat license when I live in Japan lol
Great video, looks like a ton of fun exploring the Tokyo waterways away from the hustle and bustle of the streets. It is amazing how many waterways there are there and that most people just don't realise that that is the case!

This might be the coolest freaking youtube video as well as views of Tokyo I have ever seen in my life. I knew that back in the day there was more attention on the rivers, but I never really paid attention to how many of them there are and what the view would be from that position. AND on top of that, for the man who is renowned for checking out secret alleyways in various Japanese cities, this is the most epic exploration of alleyways you've ever done. like holy cow man, this is phenomenal. your vision and artistic eye have always been great, but you have quite pleasantly destroyed all expectations I have ever had of your videography and perspective. Amazing, congrats, wonderful job Norm!

So happy to see you cruising on the rivers of Tokyo! I was able to do this the last time I was in Tokyo, Sept/Oct 2019 starting from the Nihonbashi Bridge. I'd seen a doc from NHK about enjoying the city waterways with unique views and I wanted to do this. The weather was hot and sticky, so it was a perfect way to enjoy a part of the morning with being on the cool water with the refreshing breezes. I went on the Riverboat Mizuha (an older wooden boat) with a husband piloting and his wife doing the tour/answering questions.It was delightful! If you have the time I really recommend seeing Tokyo from this unique perspective.

I knew that Tokio is a haven city but I never would have thought that Tokio had so many waterways 😮 I love beeing on water so that's definetly another thing I want to do when I'll travel to Japan! This is so so beautiful! 😍

Getting your license was a tremendous idea. I had no idea the Tokyo waterways were so extensive. A totally different and rare view of the city.
The boat at 8:00 caught my attention. Apparently it is called Himiko and was designed by the Mangaka Leiji Matsumoto, who created Galaxy Express, Captain Harlock and Interstella (for Daft Punk!!)
It's a beautiful cruise with a cool backstory.

Man you get to see Japan in a way so few people do. Loved the narrow river with the old boats. Would have been so amazing to see Japan’s waterways in the Meiji and Tokugawa eras
I live close to Utrecht, NL (a city known for its waterways) and have been boating around the city like this before. I can totally agree it gives a whole new view to familiar surroundings, and I find it to be very relaxing. I might try this in Tokyo some day.

I watched an IRL streamer go kayaking in the tokyo canals. Even people on jet ski where there. I had no idea you could do so much in the tokyo canals. It gives a cool new perspective of the city
