Allen is the master on these old bikes, a true craftsman. He's teaching a whole new generation the dying art of benchwork through his videos. Allen is a surgeon with a hacksaw.
I’m always still amazed how straight he cuts lines with a hacksaw.. doesn’t seem like it would be that difficult.. but it can be. Dude makes cylinder heads with a hacksaw, a file and a welder
I still have my hacksaw from when I was an apprentice - its called a Sandvik and it's made out of box sections. A good hacksaw and good technique gets you straight cuts. Practice makes perfect, but I'd recommend keeping your wrist fairly rigid, let your elbow do the flexing, don't put too much pressure on the blade, let the teeth do the cutting and if possible, keep your blade as close to parallel with your cut-line as possible. You usually have to start the cut perpendicular but once the groove is established you can shallow the angle out. With all that said, I have never cut a cylinder block in half with a hacksaw!!
@@CONEHEADDK true, but it’s not something I do a lot of anyways. I’m a aircraft sheet metal guy by trade so it’s mostly shears and bandsaws for what we work with. Still, Millyard is a skilled dude
@@Livi_333 Even the best tools can turn "a tool" into a skilled craftman, as much as the best dress can turn "a pig" into "a fox". NOT that I'm calling you a tool at all. We all know the "it takes 10.000 hours of doing something, to become "a pro"", and sheet metal working is a far more impressive skill that "just" cutting straight. I remember Rick as more or less the only impressive guy in the OCC tv series, and that was the first time I saw sheet metal forming. "Funny" how little "hype" craftmanship educations got, when I went to school, but maybe the teachers believed, that those kinds of jobs were for those, who couldn't make it in higher educations.
Cheers Allen, nice xmas present for us, 2 video's in the space of a week, have a great time and don't eat too much cake 😉👍 btw, one day that Hacksaw will be a museum piece 😁
We are cursed to live in a time that must bear witness to the demise of the west. But at least we have this channel to soften the blow and remind us of the better things we once had. Thanks to Allen and his wonderful wife - I have no idea where you found her in this day and age, but you are a lucky man. 👍
You're an inspiration. Not only because of your skills and talent, but also because of your modesty and how you involve your wife on your videos. keep up the good work!
The way you bend that aluminum without any special jigs or tools is really impressive, it lines up so perfectly it looks like it was freshly cast from a new mold!
Honest Allen, my head hurts when you finish fabrication and it looks like it belongs and how it should have been out of the Factory. It's outrageous!!!! As always top work Allen.
Your videos never fail to impress or entertain. I actually checked on the play bar 3/4th of the way through and thought to myself, damn it, this is going to be over soon. Thanks for being an island of calm inspiration in a sea of madness.
It's great watching Allen working with his hands and basic tools he is one of the most talented people I have seen, everything he does is explained perfectly
The way Allen marks stuff up looks so casual, yet the results are always perfect. Me, I spend hours with vernier calipers and thin scribes double and triple checking everything and once I've carefully bent it all up, it looks nothing like I wanted 😂
Yep,sometimes you can overdo it,I spent ages once jigging out a particular bracket for some Brammer belt drives idlers which then got lost at or en route to the platers, the replacements I heated, bent and shaped in the vice in about 2 minutes each with a big copperhead and they were better than the first ones too😁
Allen your video's are always fascinating to watch. The knowledge you carry in your head of numerous motorcycle makes and models is way way above average
More of your excellent work, using a hacksaw, some files & sandpaper, your eyeball and your TIG welder. Allen, there is no limit to your fabrication skills! Cheers and a happy holiday season for you & yours.
Just once, I want you to experience my world where I say things like - “It’s all finished and polished and it fits….OK, I guess” I’m convinced that the secret of your success is total mastery of the hacksaw. You should write a book called ‘Zen and the Art of the Hacksaw’. PS - I totally agree about being in the shop at night (great visuals)!
Hope he has access to tools. My dad let me use his wood carving knives at 5 yo, and all machines except the stationary table saw from pre puberty, and I have never meat anyone, who's better with tools than me. Your kid could become a genius of some kind. Best wishes
LOVED watching this video Allen!!! Well done Sir! I always enjoy watching your work, using your "old-school" tools (buffing-machine,vices,hacksaw,metal-files,etc.) That alone gives your watchers, motivation use those same tools and do things by hand!!! Brilliant!!! :-)

We have a lot of bad things on internet these days. But thanks we have people like Allen "Zen" Millyard sharing amazing contents like this. Even the name sounds so poetic for a super talented craftsman... I´m a DIY guy with some talent and some tools...but sometimes even a straight cut is a challenge for me!!! But I´m learning. Video after video...and hours of practice. I´ll also adopt a poetic name to try do something amazing in my garage...as long I´m from a metric place...therefore my name will be Phillips Lathemetre.
Simply Wonderful compulsive viewing that Allen. Turning a hacksaw blade thro 90 degrees absolutely incredible, I never learnt that in my apprenticeship!! TopMan 😎
There’s simply no justice. Allen’s amazing talent, and fabulous vehicles get 178k subscribers, yet some muppet showing off yet another supercar they’ve rented get 1m!!! Make sure you tell your friends about Allen.
I also fabricate and make parts from scratch from time to time, this guy is on another level, makes it look so easy. Allen, here's an idea for you, how about a series of 'how to videos' to help us to try to get to your level? Knowing where exactly to clamp sheet plate before bending for example,.....how you got that shape to match exactly is beyond us mere mortals I feel.
I think you're just taking the *iss out of us now! Most of us couldn't cut straight with a hacksaw to save our lives. Alan? Well Alan rotates it 90 degrees and still cuts it straight....True master, love the vids!

Wow what amazing job again, You are so spot on, you make me look like a crap engineer, I made one of those scribing blocks too in the training school, good times. I wish somebody like you was our teacher!!! thanks for the video. :)
Imagine living in the 1920's. Surely we'd be enjoying stereopticon shows of Allen Millyard transmogrifying a Castle class into a 4-8-0 using only Modell 1890 and a blowtorch.
Intellect and experience on display in the placing, measuring and marking method used for the gearshift shaft. Excellent polishing job on the modified cover. 👍 The woman in the home hand-crafting, the man in the shop hand-crafting, the nocturnal hedgehog being crafty. 👍😊
With a little practice you can cut straight lines with a hacksaw he says... Welp after practicing the past 45 of my 57 years I still can't cut nothing straight with a hacksaw... This man is a hacksaw guru...
I love your simple solutions to tricky problems, it shows how your mind works and you are passing on some gems of information ! Extending the gear selector shaft in a pillar drill vise is one very clever little trick and so obvious once you see it but looking at that vise you'd never imagine it would produce accurate results !
Only you Allen, i like to do it wet because it keeps the dust down and keeps my hands clean........ Practical and makes sense! Home made mince pies are so much better than shop. Thank you for upload . Always quality and informative.
Brilliant stuff Alan. The buffed side cover looks more like enhancements to a show bike engine than the results of cobbled up parts to make one item. Very clever. 😊
I love watching your videos Allen. I might see them because I like motorcycles and machining, But mostly I love seeing how you love working on things. :)
Great bit of work you have condensed down to 8 minutes or so and you breeze throug the fact that the file and saw are so tedious, as is the polishing, but so rewarding when done. Cheers and have a merry Christmas Allen and Tracy!
Fantastic as usual, your hacksawing and other metal working skills are unbelievable. I hope that Tracery's food mixing bowl is never empty and Santa brings you some new hacksaw blades! Wishing you both a "just perfect" Christmas.

You are an absolute wizard with a hacksaw and hand file, and pretty much everything else you touch. True craftsman 👏

I just love the Vintage Hacksaw...
