Charging My Tesla 0-100% in RECORD Heat

  • I adventure into record-breaking temperatures to do a charge test on my Tesla Model 3 Long Range from 0-100%, then I dive into data showing the charging speed, cost, time, etc.
Las Vegas recently reached 120 degrees this weekend, and I went out to do this charging test on my Tesla. It took over one hour to fully charge! This is definitely not the norm, but the heat does slow the charging rate quite a bit. Even in this heat, we got from 0-70% pretty fast, and if this were any other circumstance other than filming a charging test video, this would be sufficient.
I then dug into all the data within the charging curve and the charging metrics. In all, it took about one hour to charge completely from 0-100% in my Tesla and I spent $18.75.

One of the best explanations of why it charges slower at the top was that it's like filling a barrel of water, but... just spilling one drop would blow up the bucket. So when you start, you can pump in water as fast as it can take it, but as you get to the top, you will have to slowly fill up the barrel so not to splash or spill even one little bit.

I live in a desert city also near the Yuma, AZ border and it's been around 115 to 125 degrees outside in the last few weeks. My battery range has gone down big time during this Summer in both my 2023 Model 3 LR and 2022 Model Y LR. The range on the Model 3 went from 330 miles on a 100% full charge down to 318 miles. And on the Model Y, 303 miles on a 100% full charge to 287 miles.
Could you do a video on your decrease in battery range since you own the same two Model Teslas. I'm interested in your findings.

I love stats and Tesla's so great idea and video. Your 71.7 kwh charge is below the 75 kwh capacity (I assume that is your's) so I guess that is from battery degradation. I’ve heard of a recent bug that makes it glitchy and not work sometimes. We don’t use it - it takes up too much battery in the summer. Without it the cabin gets up to 150 sometimes which is crazy but that’s a ton of work on the AC to keep that below 100!
