    This was a GREAT explanation of how people know what side of the court they need to serve from or what the score has to be. The way you walked us through each point then explained WHY each player had to be on a particular side makes since now. I have had people try to explain it to me, but the visual aid was what did it for me. Thank you!

    I was reading the rulebook (2020 version) which is as clear as mud. Thanks for the effort in making this video, you rock!! In summary, when a player serves in her 'home' service area, the score is even, odd in the 'guest' service area. The first server, of a rally or a game, always starts on the right service area, behind the baseline but within the imaginary centreline and sideline. Knowing a player's home service area and their score, we can tell if a player is in the right position or not when it coms to serving or receiving. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

    • @LinneaTucker
      @LinneaTucker  3 года назад +1

      Harry, you are correct. At the beginning of each game, I make a mental note of the two players stand on the right-hand side of each court. It helps me to correct scores when we lose track. When playing mixed doubles, I always make sure that I am diagonally opposite the female opponent, so either the men are first servers or the women are.

    How about this: players only flipflop sides when a server scores. If you start the game on the even side, the score will always be even when you are there. And, the "correct position" rules (4.B.6.b) require it.

    very good. THANKS
    you used the odd/even court terminology which was great--many pros say ad/deuce court terminology in their explanations which is confusing for non-tennis players. as one poster commented it would help if you add the graphic even/odd on the courts.
    if you could use your excellent graphics to do a simple stacking sequence video it would be great.
    if you make this video, spare the omnipresent explanation of WHY one stacks. most video stacking explanations start with a long description of WHY it is strategic. we can absorb only so much new information and the main lesson is HOW to stack not WHY you stack. WHY you stack could be a separate video. Thanks again.

    I had to watch it many times and pause frequently to see if the players positions match my expectations based on the rules. Eventually it did. The terminology is what is confusing your. There is server number 1 and server 2 then the there is the first server. They are different things. The first server is the person on the right side of the court as you face the net when the games starts. And they are called the first server from that point forward. The first server can be server #1 or #2 and will change through out the game. The label, server #1 or #2 is given when the team earns the server and is given based on their position the court. Who ever is standing on the right side is server#1. Their position is determined by the current score for that team, So if the score is odd, the first server is on the left side and is labeled server #2, and the other server is labeled server #1 and will serve the ball from the right side. Serve always starts from the right side, regardless of score or where first server one is standing.

  • @tvbuijhg
    @tvbuijhg 2 года назад

    If it helps anybody, don't get hung up on your server number. It can change during the game and is assigned to you when your team gets the serve. If you are the first server of the game, your server number is 2. If both your team and the opposing team loose their first rallies, You, as the starting server on your team is now server number 1 and serving from the right just as you did when you were server #2, since your score is still zero, an even number. Then the next thing to remember is not to get hung up on the term "Starting Server". Remember that if you are the starting server, your position is always dependent upon your score, regardless if you are serving or not. So if your score is odd, you are standing on the left side. If your team gets server "a side out", you don't server even though you are designated the "Starting Server", and you are now server #2 again. It is those two things that I got hung up and this video helped clear up. I hope....

    Great video. This definitely helps. Eventually I will get it. Game start was explained to me as the first server says, zero-zero start. I am not sure how we get to zero-zero 2 but points can only be made while that team is serving. Perhaps 0-0-2 is the guy on the same team serving second. Then there is second serve, the other person serves on the same team. So if my team has a point the score and serving sequence will be, I think 1-0-2, our point is the one because we are serving, 0 because the other team has not scored and I am second server so I say 2. I am enjoying the game. Hey, let’s just get a score board.

    I’m confused...according to the official rules, it appears to say that the serve is always made from the side of the court according to the serving team’s score - if the serving team’s score is even then service is made from the even side, and if the serving team’s score is odd then service is made from the odd side. I’ve read and re-read the rules a 1/2 dozen times and that’s how it seems to read. Please clarify and please direct me to the rule that states otherwise. Thanks!

      This all finally clicked for me after watching her video and re-reading the rule book... I hope!
      Rule 4.B.6.a (2021 rules) says that the serving team always begins serving from the right/even side.
      The player who is properly lined up on that side is the first to serve. I've just started playing, but it's my belief that this normally takes care of itself. However, I've seen videos of advanced players and they're switching sides during game play...as a tactical advantage, I suppose. So, if they get mixed up, these serving rules help keep everything straight. I think. 🙄

    I'm still not clear about doubles positioning and odd (left side) and even (right side) scoring. So when the game starts (0-0-2), Team A serves and whoever is standing on the right side in Team A is Server 2. Let's say Team A scores 3 points from Server 2 then faults and Team B gets the serve. So in the Team B side, whoever is starting in the right side will be Server 1 and the one standing on the left will be Server 2. So Team B be calls out 0-3-1. Team B faults and the serve goes to Server 2. So Team B calls out 0-3-2. Team B faults again and the serve returns to Team A. Because Team A's score is odd (3) whoever is standing on the left side becomes Server 1 and serves from there (left side)?

    • @LinneaTucker
      @LinneaTucker  2 года назад

      Anytime the serve switches to the other side of the net, the first serve starts on the right-hand side. So in your scenario, the serve starts with the player on the right side and the score is 3-0-1. The score for team A is odd (3) because the very first server at the very start of the game is now standing on the left side.

    • @JCMeyer
      @JCMeyer Год назад

      @@LinneaTucker So when the service switches over to the other team you mean to say it always starts on the right side? So I’m confused at the other sites indicating that the service starts depending on your score. They indicate that if your score is even you start on the right side and if your score is on you start on the left side?

      When the ball switches sides to the opposing time, this is called “side out”
      From Rulebook:
      3.A.38. Side Out - The awarding of the serve to the opposing team after a singles player or doubles team loses its serve.
      4.B.6.a.
      At the start of each side out, service begins in the right/even serving area.
      When the team’s score is even (0, 2, 4 ...), the team’s starting server’s correct position is at the right/even serving area. When the team’s score is odd (1, 3, 5...), the starting server’s correct position is at the left/odd court.
      4.B.6.b.
      When the team’s score is even (0, 2, 4 ...), the team’s starting server’s correct position is at the right/even serving area. When the team’s score is odd (1, 3, 5...), the starting server’s correct position is at the left/odd court.
      4.B.6.c.
      After each side out, service begins with the player correctly positioned on the right/even side of the court according to the team’s score. This player is referred to as “Server 1” and the partner is “Server 2.”

    • @LinneaTucker
      @LinneaTucker  Год назад

      The starting servers at the beginning of the game (the moment the score is 0-0-2) is different from server 1 / server 2 during the game. The portion of the starting servers determines whether your score should be even or odd.
