  • Starbound is a two week, full time, intensive musical theatre workshop produced in Melbourne every January. It features 14 to 21-year-old students and an amazing live band. 'I Am Africa' from The Book of Mormon was song number 19 of 20 in Starbound 16. This is a multi-camera version thanks to Wilkar Concerts.

One of so many brilliant songs from the musical. The utter, ironic cluelessness and self-congratulation of it is just so delicious and trenchant.

The guy who belts the "Just like Bono, I am Africa" has the most AMAZING vocals!! I was listening to this and my jaw literally dropped, he's so talented!!

@@Kalabanano that's true, but if you take into consideration that this is a sort of "student production" that doesn't have professionals, it is very impressive that he has that kind of vocal power!

Feels like the audience didn't understand the ironic humor of the song. Maybe it's because Australia is a bit, uh... behind on race relations.

There should have been some native characters on stage. That would have conveyed the humor when the natives are singing "the life we live is primitive and proud" and as they try to continue singing the song the Mormons get in front and continue the lyrics "We are africa" and the natives get pushed into the background.

Little to do with race relations in Australia.
The humour just doesn't culturally translate very well. Black African-Australians are at most 0.5% of the population (and even that figure is not firm) compared to 10-15% in the states. There wasn't a history of black minstrel shows in Australia, nor do we have the whole Valley Girl travelling to Africa to get insta-famous stereotype. Perhaps most importantly, there's just not that many Australians who feel any desire to appropriate the culture of Indigenous Australians - the dominant 'black' group in Australia.
Australia is not 'behind' or 'in front' of anyone on race relations. Our circumstances are just not really comparable to anywhere else in the world. We have a legacy of colonial dispossession, but with no Trail of Tears. We have a legacy of discriminatory migration policy, but no true equivalent of chattel slavery. We are far more Anglo-Celtic, but far less Northern European or Hispanic. We are far more monolingual, but also don't discriminate against Asians when it comes to university admissions.
Also - this was not exactly a professional performance in a West End or Broadway theatre. Of course the laughter is not going to be as pronounced at the "right" times. I doubt many non-parents would have been there.

@@alexrobinson515 we do 20 songs from all different musicals as part of a 2 week summer workshop. Every cast member learns approx 9 songs in 12 days then we bump into the theatre and rehearse and perform the show. I Am Africa was the 2nd last song before the cast did Latter Day Saints which you can also find on RUclips. It had the entire 90 cast members (it’s crazy!)
