Okay, _BUT..._ Nichola Tesla is most definitely thematically linked with the season arc. The Nichola Tesla immigrant stuff is obviously thematically cohesive with the revelations about the Timeless Child when put in context of the whole season and viewed in retrospect. Ya, narratively it's divorced from the story of the season arc, but thematically it's pretty strongly tied to the Timeless Child stuff.
There's a reason that they did a story about the Doctor meeting Tesla, getting on like a house on fire, and colouring everything with the theming of immigrant exploitation and historical whitewashing... before they did a finale about how the Doctor has a stolen history as an exploited immigrant child with the most literal narrative and visual metaphor for historical whitewashing I have ever seen in the TC/Brendan dual unreliable narrator juxtaposition.
Shocker, I know, that both TTC and Orphan 55 are the 2 low ranked episodes for which I have much higher opinions than others... The thing is, that Orphan 55 was integrating the allegory about Global Warming in the whole damn episode, and the best part of the viewing experience for me was recontextualising what I had seen after what seemed to be a wild third act twist. The fridge realisation that the reason OTT characters like Hyph3n, Green haired mechanic and son, Benni, etc all do stupid stuff to drive the plot forward and don't really work as characters is because they are all doing double duty as allegorical metaphors for how different people respond to the everpresent looming threat of the Dregs a.k.a. the allegorical metaphor for global warming... hit me the next morning. It changed my whole perception of the episode from _"Well that was a fun enough Doctor Who-ish mess of a little weekly adventure. It was fine."_ into _"Oh, my god, it's the fricking Sun Makers again, but without the troubling anti-semitic tropes."_ Nothing is what it seems on the surface, because the commentary is so thick you could cut it with a knife.
It never lets this stuff get in the way of just telling a silly runaround, monster of the week, base under seige, bog standard, Doctor Who adventure story, so the third act twist kinda jumps up and smacks you in the face yelling _"SURPRISE! It was Earth the whole time! Yes I just did the Planet of the Apes bit. This is about global warming sucker... get on my level!"_ I will freely admit that because of the way this came off, the episode kinda failed in delivering the twist and the allegory, since for alot of people it came off alot more like _"Surprise! Planet of the Apes. The episode is about Global Warming now."_ Rather than feeling like everything clicked into place with the final act reveal, it comes off as a massive tone shift with a flimsy narrative justification. Just like It Takes You Away, you really do need to get on Ed Hime's level and realise what it's trying to do to appreciate the episode. It's a scathing commentary about global warming denialism from start to finish. Like The Mutants being about Apartheid, or the Green Death... also about ecology... Orphan 55 is _not subtle,_ and I kinda love it. It's definitely a 'love me or hate me' kind of episode though, so I get why it's so easy to just hate it. I'm not gonna convince anyone who hates it to love it, because the reasons are probably similar, but the personal reaction and conclusions are opposite. That description of Gromit laying down track in front of the speeding train sounds awesome to me, so I loved this one.
I definitely agree about Praxeus being underrated tho. It only suffers from being an also ran globe trotting adventure after Spyfall, and ecological story after Orphan 55. That, and it had to change the subject after Fugitive of the Judoon dropped a tantalising truckload of teases about potential plot development only one week prior... without addressing any of it. In a different context I think it would stand out alot more than it does.

Praxeus 100% would have been pulled if it had aired even 2 weeks later.
They pulled an episode of Casualty about a nerve agent which had some pretty important story points in it. And from what I can tell, it's just because the word Quarantine was said once or twice, and they had to wear hazmat suits and disinfect going in and out. This episode was only aired/released to the public about 4 months after it was supposed to air, well after the show had gone on break cause they'd ran out of episodes.
Basically Praxeus was really lucky to have been aired at all.

RTD and Moffat already had early masterpieces in just their first seasons. Now we are 2 seasons into the Chibnall era and there is really nothing to write home about. The closest comes the Lone Cyberman episode before the dreadful finale.
A shame really because I was rooting for Chibnall/Jodie since 2017

  • @RiainRamblez

Yeah looking back Series 12 really is a bit all over the place. I especially miss the breath of fresh air that Series 11 brought. That being said, it's more obvious than ever that Chibnall and co are really good at historicals and villains. And honestly, those strength's mean more to me than convoluted plots. That being said, I hope Series 13 manages to combine the simple elements of Series 11 with the ongoing strengths of villain's and historicals.

Your criticisms of Orphan 55 are completely fair; for me personally, when I saw it, it felt good. I think thats because the it felt a lot like classic Who stories. Structurally, it seems to have a fair ammount of 'base under siege' DNA. The setting (and set) reminded me of Paradise Towers and Leisure Hive, whilst its Earth reveal echoed the discovery of the Marble Arch sign in 'The Mysterious Planet'.
Series 10 through 12 in general felt truer to the classic era than 1 through 9; you can see parallels of the sort Mr. TARDIS calls out in Praxeus in many stories. There is a good deal of nostalgia in that, but there is also a kind of world building: it is easier to see stories like these as part of a single, wibbly-wobbly, 38-season tapestry of events. I like to imagine that the events of Orphan 55 take place a few thousand years prior to those of 'The Ark in Space' and 'The Sontaran Experiment' where the Doctor visits the cleaned and rejuvinated Earth.
Thanks for another lovely video Mr. TARDIS.

5:25 That's an issue I'm honestly surprised that occurred in Series 12.

I must say, I really enjoyed this series as a whole. It was the first Series I got to watch as it was airing and so none of it was spoiled for me, and thus I got to follow the story on my own two feet, so I’ll always have a special place in my heart for it, for that, with that being said, my ranking:
11- Orphan 55. It’s just devoid of good stuff. Something I’ve been noticing, many of the bad episodes, in my opinion, aren’t actively terrible, they’re just lacking quality.
10- The Timeless Children. A HUGE step up in quality here, but still the third part of a convoluted story that began amazingly and tailed off in the middle.
9- Can You Hear Me? Way too over-stuffed. Beyond that, good stuff.
8- Ascension of the Cybermen- Pretty good here, really. A bit too simple, though, and it’s really just a prologue.
7- Spyfall Part Two- I can’t act like this is a particularly good episode, but I enjoyed it.
6- Fugitive of the Judoon- I liked it.
5- Praxeus. People don’t give this enough credit.
4- Spyfall Part One. Better than part one, and again, I do not regret watching.
3- Revolution of the Daleks. I really enjoyed this episode...
2- Nikola Tesla’s Night of Terror. What a title, this was a pretty enjoyable and fun episode...
1- The Haunting of Villa Diodati- Genuinely a favourite episode of mine... ever? Seriously, I’d rank this near the top of some of the best of Doctor Who

The problem with making so many episodes arc-related isn't just that you risk alienating your audience and polarising the fanbase, it's also the fact that they'll be heavily impacted either positively or negatively by the resolution. I really enjoyed most of series 12 on the initial broadcast, but I was left seriously disappointed by "The Timeless Children" and all the reveals that it brought up. And because so much of the series was built around setting up those reveals, it's kind of diminshed my enjoyment of episodes like "Spyfall", "Fugitive of the Judoon", and "Ascension of the Cybermen" ("Haunting of Villa Diodati" is kind of affected by this, but if I'm honest it's good enough to get around the issue). By contrast, on my most recent rewatch, I found myself really enjoying "Nikola Tesla's Night of Terror" and "Praxeus", episodes which I kind of blew off as being speed bumps for the series momentum at the time of broadcast

Certainly an improvement, this series. I thought that Orphan was abysmal but I didn't really hate any other story - and Villa, Judoon and the second part of the Cyber trilogy were all pretty damn stonking. I also really loved the Tesla story.
But it still never really Popped in the way that series 1-4 or series 6 did, IMHO. It still feels a bit,... Uninspired. But that's Chibnal. He's doing him and that's fine, I guess.

Honestly... I have to agree with these rankings and your thoughts for the most part. Too many good ideas were crammed into too few episodes. Series 12 is far from being the worst season of Doctor Who with strong takes on the Daleks, the Cybermen, and the best New Series incarnation of the Master, but it's a hot mess. There's a lot to like, but almost every episode has too much going on to stick the landing. I'm equal parts excited to explore this new origin for the Doctor and disappointed that The Timeless Children wasn't for the Doctor what Genesis of the Daleks was for her greatest enemy.
That said, I do want to see more of Ashad, the Skithra Queen, and the Fugitive Doctor in some form, I do consider The Haunting of Villa Diodati a solid 10/10, and most of all, I do want them to commit to the Doctor's new origins rather than try to backtrack and waste the next series on franchise maintenance.

I won't lie. I'm nervous about series 13. With the news that John Bishop is joining the cast, I'm worried that the same mistakes are being made with a crowded tardis and not enough room for development of the main characters to the fullest, which is odd to say as Chibnall worked on Torchwood, a show with a larger cast and still managed to develop its characters. I know that Chibnall has a 5 year plan, but if theres not a focus on tight and intricate and interesting storytelling, the plan will be dead in the water, especially after the timeless child reveal which turned some people away from the show. I hope the whole story can play out because if left in it's current form, it takes away from the mythos of the show and creates a dark spot that people would rather ignore.

    • @ftumschk
      @ftumschk 3 года назад +1

I share your nervousness about Bishop/S13 - it's as if Chibnall must have a "wisecracking middle-aged Companion" to fit his formula for Doctor Who. As to his previous track-record, Chibnall only wrote 8 _Torchwood_ episodes from a total of 41, and there were a number of very good writers (including RTD) who wrote the rest.

Haunting of Villa Diodati is the clear standout of the series, followed by Tesla then Can You Hear Me. This series succeeds when it focuses on the strong characters and ideas at the heart of each episode and actually expands on them, not go full blockbuster. With that said, I still find Series 12 an ambitious, if flawed, season of television. Fugitive of the Judoon is still an awesome watch even if there's no actual wait, Orphan 55 is a major guilty pleasure and Revolution of the Daleks is a nutty blockbuster event that nails the Daleks as a concept. Ascension/Timeless is a glorious disaster - it gets a lot right, but also fails so badly in other aspects. It's basically the revival's Trial of a Time Lord.

My only complaint with the Daleks was that Nicholas Briggs wasn't given any lines to refer to the Doctor with the pronouns "she" and "her". Not only did it seem as if they didn't realise she's female, but it also seemed as though the Daleks had stopped referring to the Doctor as they're ultimate enemy. Still, I adore the Daleks in Revolution.

I spotted that, too. At 3:50 we see clips from ostensibly "worst episode(s) in the history of the show", 3 out of 4 being Moffat stories, and 2 out of those 3 being Capaldi stories. Personally, I've seen few NuWho stories as dire as "Fear Her", and I can think of any number of candidates from the John Nathan-Turner era. I don't think Orphan 55 is absolutely the worst-ever story, but I'd certainly rank it way lower than Hell Bent, MA/WF, Asylum of the Daleks and Revenge of the Cybermen.

It's basically yet another Cybermen/Master crossover, about as badly written as Dark Water/Death in Heaven, but with an even worse resolution, very little tension, and a HUGE, hamfisted loredump in the middle. I don't like the original concept, but even so, the delivery of this lore revelation could've been handled better in a million different ways, and maybe a few more fans would've been convinced as a result.

I disagree, I'd say Orphan 55 is the WORST episode in the entire series, both Modern and Classic. It has nothing whatsoever to redeem it, not a good plot, good dialogue, or good performances or even something you can appreciate for camp value or a good laugh. Thinking of the worst episodes I can think of..
"Timelash" - The Borad makeup was pretty good for it's time, Colin Baker gave a good performance, Paul Darrow was so hammy it was funny, and I defy anyone not to giggle when Peri is menaced by one of the Morlocks who look like giant plastic willies. It's so bad it's almost good in a lot of ways.
"Delta and The Bannermen" - had Ken Dodd in it, and I defy anyone British of a certain age to not smile fondly upon seeing him, and wonder if he's going to attack the Doctor with a Tickling Stick. The whole concept of aliens chasing a princess to a holiday camp in Wales is so bizarre it's good, and the green alien baby that only ate special toothpaste is awesomely funny.
"Unicorn and the Wasp" - had a good performance by Tennant and Tate, it was nice seeing the actor who played Henry Gordon Jago back, although a crying shame they didn't have him AS Jago, and the actress playing Christie was very believable.
There are rarely Who serials that don't have SOMETHING. I'd say Orphan 55 is the only one that I can't find something to praise.

    • @ftumschk
      @ftumschk 3 года назад

I wouldn't personally include The Unicorn & The Wasp in that Hall of Shame; it's a fun, murder-mystery romp, which - apart from Black Orchid - we rarely see in Doctor Who. "Unicorn" also has a witty script, and a strong cast who play their parts beautifully.

I’ll say this before and I’ll say it again: I really dislike the Ruth Doctor. I admire Jo Martian’s acting and she would play an Amazing Doctor, Anyone can be a Doctor. But I can not stand her attitude with her gritted teeth hissing at Jodie’s Doctor To Shut Up for the 14th time, I can’t stand that type of behaviour and just pisses me off. Now don’t get me wrong I also have issues with Jodie’s Doctor as well by how she’s written.
But also I have a problem with Ruth’s Doctor is that her incarnation makes no sense. It’s just shock value for the sake of shocking the audience. I bet you we’re never gonna get an explanation as to where she fits in the Timeline. I refuse to believe she is before the 1st Doctor. Or between 2nd and 3rd. Fat Fucking Chance.

And of course the stupid fans are still supporting all the shits of these seasons.

@@vashtanerada2731 There's nothing stopping the current Master from being pre-Missy, or pre-Yana for that matter. All we know is that he's probably a post-Ainley incarnation, as he made a reference to the "Jodrell Bank" (Pharos Project) incident from _Logopolis._

It doesn't break canon, it just re-contextualises it. This type of canon altering has been a very common part of Doctor Who. Hell, Series 5 and Day of the Doctor both serve to remove things from Canon that Moffat didn't agree with.
Granted, The Timeless Children was clumsy with how it altered the canon, but it's certainly not out of the ordinary for Doctor Who.
